This on-site integration of lodging and adventure gear makes it incredibly easy for visitors to rent a 4x4 and immediately explore the area's iconic mining roads, ghost towns, and high-alpine passes, such as the famous Alpine Loop. The park is situated right in the heart of Silverton, just a few blocks from the historic downtown area, meaning shopping, restaurants, and the town's charming saloons are all within easy walking distance. You can conveniently step out for a meal or to explore local shops without needing to move your vehicle.
The location is renowned for two specific, exciting natural features:
- The Animas River: The river (or creek, as some call it) runs right along the side and across the nearby historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad tracks, providing the soothing sound of running water and a great place for walking and enjoying the riparian area.
- Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad: The famous historic train turns around right next to the RV park, offering a fantastic photo opportunity and a sense of connection to the area's rich rail history. Crucially, the location is close enough to witness the beauty of the train, but far enough that guests note there are no train whistles disturbing the peace in the middle of the night.
The facility is also committed to accessibility, offering a Wheelchair accessible entrance and Wheelchair accessible parking lot to ensure all guests can comfortably enjoy their high-mountain stay. For guests with an RV, the sites are generally level and accommodating for various sizes, including larger rigs, with staff often noted for assisting with the back-in process. On-site parking is provided for the convenience of all visitors.
- Full Hookups: Every RV site is a full hookup site, providing maximum convenience with RV electric hookup (20, 30, and 50 amp service), RV water hookup, and RV sewer hookup.
- Laundry and Showers: The park features a clean, on-site laundromat and modern restroom and shower facilities. Customer reviews consistently praise the exceptional cleanliness of the bathrooms.
- Connectivity: Free WiFi is available throughout the campground, allowing you to stay connected, check trail conditions, and plan your next day’s outing.
- Adventure Planning: Staff are knowledgeable about the extensive network of local trails and sell trail guidebooks and maps, providing excellent, on-site advice for your self-guided adventures.
- Payments: The park accepts the Camping fee via popular modern methods, including Credit cards and Debit cards, for simple and flexible booking.
- General Store: A camp store is available for last-minute supplies, snacks, and gear necessary for your high-mountain excursions.
- On-Site Jeep Rentals: As part of its name, the park is one of the largest Jeep rental agencies in the San Juan Mountains. Guests can rent a late-model 2-door or 4-door Jeep Wrangler right from the RV park, complete with a complimentary trail map and expert advice from staff. This eliminates the hassle of finding a rental agency off-site and provides an immediate launchpad to the mountains.
- Direct Trail Access for OHVs: For guests who bring their own Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs), ATVs, or 4WD vehicles, the park allows direct access from the site to the many surrounding backcountry trails, a significant convenience for enthusiasts.
- Proximity to World-Class Trails: The park is the perfect staging point for popular, historic high-country routes like the Alpine Loop (a nationally designated 4x4 byway), the Ophir-Imogene Loop to Ouray and Telluride, and the historic Animas Forks Ghost Town.
- Unbeatable Scenic Views: Situated in an old mining valley at an elevation of over 9,300 feet, the RV sites offer beautiful, expansive views of the surrounding San Juan Mountain peaks, including Kendall Mountain.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: The resort is a welcoming place for your whole crew, as Dogs are allowed, with simple rules to ensure a pleasant stay for everyone (leashes and cleaning up after pets are required).
- Highly-Rated Cleanliness: The outstanding cleanliness of the facilities, particularly the bathrooms and showers, is frequently highlighted by past guests as some of the cleanest they have ever used, a critical factor for a comfortable camping trip.

Furthermore, the park’s location in Silverton is exceptional. You are not just camping near the mountains; you are camping within a rich, historic community with direct, easy access to both the town and the trails. The tranquil sound of the nearby river and the occasional gentle passage of the Durango train enhance the genuine mountain atmosphere.
Customer feedback consistently praises the most important factors for a great RV stay: clean facilities, level sites, full hookups, and the extraordinarily friendly and helpful staff who are experts on the local area. For those seeking a blend of comfort, cleanliness, and the most convenient access to world-class 4x4, hiking, and biking in the spectacular San Juan Mountains, Silver Summit RV Park & Jeep is truly the ultimate Silverton basecamp.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We stayed at Silver Summit for a week and a half. The site was wonderful with a beautiful view. Having full hook ups is so convenient. It is wonderful that the river is just right across the railroad tracks. The staff here was incredibly friendly. We also rented a jeep for a day and had a wonderful experience with that as well. The grounds are very nice at this facility and the bathrooms are the cleanest that I have ever used. Thank you for a wonderful stay and looking forward to seeing you next year.
June 24 · Emily GSpent 2wks here and loved it. Level and comfortable sites. Conveniently located to all the trails as well as Ouray and Telluride. Just a few blocks from downtown Silverton. Beautiful views of the mountains. The Durango train is very close but no train whistles in the middle of the night. Creek (river?) runs just along the side of the park so great place for walking and sounds of running water.
September 01 · Terri MohGreat location, quiet rv park located right at the beginning of town. Everything in Silverton is within walking distance. Nice semi level back in spots. Very clean restrooms/showers. Jeep rentals up front with the Durango/Silverton train out back. WiFi is so-so, but what do you expect for this location. We will be back again especially since this campground has the lowest price in the area.
August 08 · Todd HoffmasterGreat place to stay, we spend summers here. The staff is very friendly, well kept, clean, great location!
July 23 · Jason MoravecWe found this park to be very convenient to our needs. We have a smaller RV so spaces were fine for us. Would have liked more trees but since it doesn't get too warm there it was fine. Staff was extremely helpful with planning our days activities. We rented a jeep from them (a bit dated) but they were knowledgeable about the area and best trails to follow. Had a great time in Silverton, CO.
