MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground Introduce
For many in Illinois, the allure of RV camping offers a unique blend of adventure, affordability, and the freedom to explore. Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended stay, RV parks provide a home base for travelers seeking to connect with nature or simply enjoy a change of scenery. Among the various RV parks dotting the Illinois landscape, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground stands out as a distinctive option, particularly for those with military affiliation. Located on the picturesque shores of Lake Michigan in North Chicago, this campground offers a unique opportunity for eligible patrons to experience waterfront camping with convenient access to a wide array of base amenities.
The MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground is part of the extensive Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program, which provides a variety of services and facilities to military personnel, retirees, and Department of Defense (DoD) civilians. This means the campground operates under specific guidelines and is primarily accessible to those with a valid military ID. For eligible Illinois residents, this campground can be an excellent choice, offering a unique setting that might not be available to the general public.
The campground’s appeal lies significantly in its prime waterfront location, providing many sites with direct views of Lake Michigan. This natural beauty, coupled with the tranquility often found on a military installation, creates a peaceful environment for relaxation and outdoor enjoyment. While reviews offer a mixed perspective on certain aspects of the campground's upkeep and amenities, the undeniable draw of its scenic location remains a consistent highlight for visitors. Understanding both the benefits and limitations is key to a satisfying stay.
RV camping at a facility like MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground offers a different experience than a typical commercial campground. Guests benefit from the security of being on a military base, and often have access to various MWR facilities that can enhance their stay, such as recreational centers, dining options, and recreational activities. While some traditional RV park amenities like full hookups at every site may differ, the overall value and unique atmosphere of being on a naval station can be a significant draw for many.
It's important for prospective campers to manage expectations regarding the facilities, as some reviews suggest that certain amenities, while available, might require a short drive or have varying levels of maintenance. However, the core offering of a level parking spot with electricity and stunning views of Lake Michigan provides a solid foundation for an enjoyable camping experience. This article will delve into the specific details of the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground to help eligible Illinois users make an informed decision for their next RV adventure.
The MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground is nestled at 715-799 Ziegemeier St, North Chicago, IL 60088, USA. This location is within the Naval Station Great Lakes, a significant military installation in Lake County, Illinois. The campground's primary advantage is its direct proximity to Lake Michigan, with many sites offering beautiful waterfront views.
Access to the campground requires entry onto the Naval Station Great Lakes. This means that only authorized users—Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retired Military, 0-100% Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Purple Heart Recipients, Former Prisoners of War (POW), Veteran Caregivers, and Department of Defense (DoD) Civilians—with valid military identification are permitted to enter and utilize the facility. Visitors should be prepared to present their ID at the main gate, typically off IL-137 (Buckley Rd).
Once inside the base, navigating to the campground involves a few turns. Upon departing the Main Gate, visitors typically go straight for about 0.2 miles to the end, then make a right onto Sampson. From there, get into the left lane and make an immediate left onto Decatur. After about 0.1 miles, make a right onto Mahan, just past a white gazebo. The route then goes down a hill for about 0.2 miles to a stop sign. The sewage dump station is straight ahead, approximately 60 feet on the right, near the Marina Building. To reach the campground itself, turning left at the stop sign onto Ziegemeier Rd will lead to the water fill station at Nunn Beach Pavilion on the right after 0.3 miles, and the campground is another 0.4 miles further on the right.
While the location boasts a fantastic waterfront setting, prospective campers should be aware of certain aspects regarding accessibility within the campground itself. Reviews indicate that while spots are generally level, they can be on the smaller side, which might be a consideration for larger RVs. Furthermore, the campground offers electric-only hookups at the sites. Water fill and a dump station are available, but they are located about a mile down the road at the Marina building, which requires a separate trip. This off-site utility access is a key point to note for planning purposes. Despite these considerations, the unique location and access to base amenities often make it a desirable choice for eligible individuals traveling through or staying in the Illinois area.

MWR facilities, including the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground, generally do not run specific public "promotions" in the same way a commercial enterprise might. Their rates are typically set based on military rank or affiliation (e.g., Active Duty, Retiree, DoD Civilian) and the season (peak vs. off-peak).
For specific pricing and any potential current deals, it is always recommended to contact the Marina & Community Recreation Center directly. They can provide the most up-to-date information on rates, availability, and any specific policies regarding extended stays or discounts for certain eligible groups. For instance, during the off-peak season (October 1 to April 30), the maximum length of stay can extend up to 210 consecutive nights, potentially offering a more cost-effective long-term option for eligible individuals. Active duty personnel on orders may also apply for limited long-term sites. It is advisable to inquire about these possibilities when making a reservation.

For eligible Illinois residents seeking a unique RV camping experience, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground offers a distinct and potentially highly suitable option. Its suitability for locals, particularly those with a military connection, stems from a confluence of its prime location, exclusive access, and the comprehensive range of amenities available on the Naval Station Great Lakes.
The most compelling aspect is undoubtedly the campground's stunning waterfront location on Lake Michigan. For those in Illinois who appreciate natural beauty and water activities, the ability to camp with a view of one of the Great Lakes is an unparalleled experience. This picturesque setting provides a peaceful retreat from the urban bustle, offering opportunities for relaxation, enjoying sunrises over the water, and experiencing the unique climate of the lakefront. While some RV parks might be located near lakes, few offer the direct, unobstructed views and access that this MWR facility provides.
Furthermore, the exclusive access for military members, retirees, and DoD civilians creates a secure and often quieter environment than public campgrounds. This sense of security and community among shared affiliations can be a significant draw for many. Knowing that the campground is part of the Naval Station Great Lakes infrastructure means adherence to base regulations, which generally contribute to a well-ordered and respectful atmosphere. For eligible Illinois residents, this offers a unique community experience that might feel more familiar and comfortable.
Beyond the immediate campground features, the extensive amenities available on Naval Station Great Lakes significantly enhance the value of a stay. Access to facilities like an 18-hole golf course, a movie theater, bowling alley, fitness center, and various dining options means that campers have a wide range of activities and conveniences at their fingertips, minimizing the need to leave the base for entertainment or services. The Marina also provides boat rentals and a camp store, catering to those who wish to explore Lake Michigan more actively. This comprehensive offering provides a resort-like experience within a secure military environment.
While it's important to acknowledge that some reviews mention aspects like electric-only sites and the distance to water and dump stations, these are often minor inconveniences when weighed against the overall benefits. For RVers who are self-contained or prepared for these specific hookup arrangements, the rewards of the location and base access far outweigh these operational considerations. The level sites and pet-friendly policy also add to its appeal for a broad range of RV travelers.
In conclusion, for eligible individuals within Illinois, the MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground is more than just a place to park an RV; it's an opportunity for a unique and memorable camping experience. It combines breathtaking natural scenery with the comfort and security of a military installation, offering a wealth of recreational and support facilities. For those who meet the eligibility criteria, it stands as a highly suitable and desirable destination for their next RV adventure in the Land of Lincoln.

MWR Navy Great Lakes RV Campground Reviews
Nice location on the water. That's the only good thing I can say. It's full of fulltimers that live here permanently, one guy said he's been here 2 years. The fulltimers have the water view. Electric only, water and dump about a mile down the road. Grounds are unkept and dog feces all over even though there dog stations around. Sadly it looks like base command doesn't care about the campground.
Jul 06, 2024 · Bill SzaboThe view of Lake Michigan is great! Making the reservation was simple. The camping spots are level. That is the good points. The spots are a bit on the small side, sadly only electric hookups, no water or dump.It still is a great place to stay, just that it could be a lot better. We have been to many FamCamps and this one is pretty much in the middle, many nicer, but many worser.
Jul 20, 2022 · Gard “CampingCoastie.com” SnyderPark has a ton of potential. However, staff has no pride of ownership and no work ethic. Watched an electrician fix a 20amp outlet and he left his trash on the ground when he was done.Simple RV Campground stuck out on the beach of Lake Michigan at the Great Lakes Naval Trng Station. You would think that a base dedicated to instilling pride in it's recruits would find it easy to care for this small 20 spot FamCamp.20 electric only sites. No water, no sewer. They are both available but 1/2 mile from the park and they aren't in the same location and the dump station is difficult for big rig access. It would be easy to solve by adding sew/wat to the sites.Access is pretty easy but the road in the park is gravel and not cared for. Potholes galore. Big rigs beware. Also, each site suffers from lake affect issues. Meaning, when it rains a lake is formed in front of your rig. All of these are easily solved with #1 asphalt or #2 a grater from time to time. All that said, this is a beautiful location with tons to do. Which is why it got a 3 rating. It just needs some TLC from the NAF staff that "should" keep it "spit and polished" like the recruiters who are trained here. Come on, show the military personnel, veterans and civilians who visit your base and enjoy your grounds some pride in ownership.Come on Great Lakes...show us how it's done!
Oct 01, 2022 · Troy “TBones” WestbrookI was not expecting much as the reviews were very bad, but I like to save my opinion to experience things for myself. Which I did, and here are my thoughts.1. Full time campers with their sites full of junk. *see photos. One guy even had an inflatable hot tub, which I could not figure out where he got the water from as all the sites are without water and sewer.2. Pit toilets were nasty dirty and not cleaned once during our stay.3. Campsites so cramped you could hear water running in the next RV.4. One full timer had his black/gray tank hose emptying into and open home depot bucket.5. Showers are dirty and in another building a mile away.6. Lets not forget the loop road! Pot holes as big as a crater. Third world countries have better roads than this. This Naval Station is absolutely gorgeous. Chock full of historic buildings and so well preserved. It was utterly shocking to see this gem of a base have such a poorly maintained and embarrassing campground. The view from camping was stunning and should be capitalized on. The CO should be ashamed for not overseeing better management.
Jul 27, 2021 · Deborah TracyIt’s very disappointing to see a MWR facility in such a state of disrepair. Our military members deserve much more that what I’m looking at here. The gravel road surrounding the RV park if full of pot holes which are filled with water. The pit toilet restrooms have rusted out metal doors. The grass is overdue for a mowing. Come on Navy MWR, you’ve dropped the ball. Fix it!
