This proximity means guests have the best of both worlds: a quiet, natural setting for their stay, coupled with convenient access to urban amenities. Furthermore, being "minutes from the lake made it easy for us with to boat," referring to the vast recreational opportunities of Shasta Lake. Beyond Lake Shasta, the park serves as a gateway to other incredible Northern California destinations, including the Shasta Cascades, the Shasta Lake Caverns, and various outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. The camp host, Jen, is noted for knowing "all the gems of the area," suggesting a wealth of local knowledge available to guests. Its location truly maximizes opportunities for exploration and relaxation in a significant portion of the Golden State.

- On-Site Management and Staff: Reviews frequently praise specific staff members like "Nancy wonderful park manager" and "camp host Jen." There's also mention of a "new maintenance crew" ensuring the park is in "tip top shape" in positive reviews, but a more recent one criticizes the maintenance, stating the "other one left" and "new owners need to wake up. Hire a new maintenance worker."
- Morning Coffee and Danishes: Some positive reviews mention the park provides "coffee in the morning along with danishes or granola bars."
Mountain Gate RV Park and Cottages offers several features that have historically made it a desirable destination for travelers in Northern California. While recent feedback presents a dichotomy, these aspects generally highlight the park's potential and appeal.
- Prime Location: Being "Nested right under Mount Shasta, just off I5 and minutes from Redding" is a major asset, providing convenient access to natural wonders and urban amenities.
- Quiet and Established Park: Historically described as a "quiet established park," it aims to offer a peaceful retreat from highway noise, despite being close to I-5 (some reviews do mention "a little traffic noise").
- Accommodates All Camping Options: With "lots of sites, that can fit all camping options," including large RVs, tents, and cabins/cottages, the park is versatile.
- Proximity to Lake Shasta: Being "minutes from the lake made it easy for us with to boat" is a significant draw for water recreation enthusiasts.
- Friendly Staff and Community: Positive reviews consistently mention "friendly staff" and "a warm group of regulars," with "Nancy a wonderful park manager" and "camp host Jen" offering local tips. This points to a welcoming atmosphere when staff are engaged.
- On-Site Amenities (when well-maintained): Features like the "big bathrooms," "pool," "hot tub," "laundry," and "fenced dog park" provide comfort and recreation. The presence of "concrete, spacious sites to park on with nice plants and groundcover all around" also adds to the appeal.
- Free Morning Refreshments: The provision of "free Danish and coffee in the morning" is a thoughtful touch appreciated by guests.
- Good Sam Affiliation: As a "Good Sam affiliated campground," it likely offers discounts to members, indicating a certain standard of quality.
It's crucial for prospective visitors to be aware of recent negative feedback that contradicts some of these highlights. Specifically, concerns have been raised about:
- Inconsistent Maintenance: Reports of "Bathrooms were either locked up for maintenance or Filthy," "Trash piled everywhere," "pool was so thick with green matter," and "grass at the sites haven't even been mowed this year" are significant.
- Abandoned Dog Park: The "Dog park has been abandoned" is a direct contradiction to its listed amenity.
- High Laundry Cost: "$8.20 a load" for laundry is noted as a deterrent.
- Management Concerns: While Nancy is praised, the phrase "new owners need to wake up. Hire a new maintenance worker since your other one left" suggests an ongoing transition or issue with overall park oversight impacting maintenance.

The ability to accommodate various camping setups, including RVs and cottages, broadens its appeal to different types of travelers. However, prospective local visitors should be aware of and consider the more recent critical feedback concerning maintenance issues, particularly regarding bathrooms, the pool, and general park cleanliness. This suggests that while the location and amenities hold great promise, the actual experience may fluctuate depending on current operational conditions. For Californians prioritizing location and the potential for a friendly atmosphere, a direct inquiry or a recent visit to verify the current state of facilities would be advisable. Mountain Gate RV Park and Cottages Reviews
Location location location ... Nested right under Mount Shasta, just off I5 and minutes from Redding. A quiet established park, with lots of sites, that can fit all camping options. Being minutes from the lake made it easy for us with to boat. Big bathrooms, friendly staff and a warm group of regulars make it hard to leave. The new maintenance crew has it in tip top shape just in time for the summer. Nancy is a wonderful park manager who did a beautiful job in accommodating our family. If you want to get some ideas on what to do, stop in and chat with the camp host Jen, she knows all the gems of the area.
Jun 04, 2025 · Andrea SilvaniukThis place is so sad. We can see it was probably a beautiful campground back in the day. Bathrooms were either locked up for maintenance or Filthy. Trash piled everywhere inside and outside. One permanent even took her dog to the bathroom to run around inside while she showered. The pool was so thick with green matter. The grass at the sites haven't even been mowed this year. Very high. Laundry was 8.20 a load. Yes 4.10 for washer, 4.10 for dryer. Dog park has been abandoned. The "new" owners need to wake up. Hire a new maintenance worker since your other one left. On a bright note Nancy is amazing.Good luck
May 29, 2025 · Sheri KarolczakThere was a winter storm warning (in the middle of March go figure) and we needed a place to stay before heading over the pass and Nancy was amazing and patient with me because i canceled then re-booked and it was no problem. Easy access to I5, not noisy, super clean bathrooms, hot showers. This is our new spot when traveling from the northwest to Arizona. Definitely recommend. Reasonably priced too!
Mar 13, 2025 · Kim VincentI have lived here almost 11 years it's a great place I feel very safe, It's very clean. The current management took over 2 years ago and has brought things back up to standard. We now have a coffee bar again and the club house is back open with a tv and lounge area, and back open to the groups that come in.The old management that was here 2 years ago closed everything down and was rude to customers and myself. Prior management continues to cause problems with bad reviews. With New management we are having events and planning new ones. The old management never had events for us so not sure why she would post bad reviews.
