Location and Accessibility
Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base is wonderfully situated at 9306 NY-30, Paul Smiths, NY 12970, USA. This address places it firmly in the northern reaches of New York’s magnificent Adirondack Park, a region celebrated for its vast forests, pristine lakes, and majestic mountains. Paul Smiths is a small hamlet, home to Paul Smith's College, and is known for its academic and outdoor recreation focus, particularly at the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC).
Accessibility to Woodland Grove is straightforward via New York State Route 30, a scenic highway that winds through the heart of the Adirondacks. This makes it relatively easy to reach by car from various parts of New York State. The campground's location provides excellent access to a wealth of outdoor activities. For instance, it's approximately 50 minutes from the Olympic Village of Lake Placid and its venues, including Whiteface Mountain, making it a convenient base for exploring these iconic sites. Saranac Lake, another popular Adirondack destination with its lakes and vibrant community, is also within easy driving distance (around 20 minutes).
What truly enhances its accessibility is its direct connection to the expansive Adirondack wilderness. The property itself encompasses 50 acres of diverse terrain, featuring wetlands, cliffs, and various forest types, all crisscrossed by a network of walking, biking, and skiing trails. This means that guests don't have to travel far to immerse themselves in nature. Furthermore, the hosts, Bob and Sheila, are locals with extensive knowledge of the area, providing invaluable "wilderness advice" and "tourist information" to help guests plan their adventures, including detailed directions to nearby hikes and paddles. This combination of convenient road access and immediate entry to the wilderness makes Woodland Grove Camping an ideal and highly accessible base for any Adirondack exploration.
Services Offered
Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base provides a focused set of services designed to enhance a primitive camping experience, with an emphasis on comfort, convenience, and invaluable local support. Their offerings cater to self-sufficient campers who appreciate a well-maintained site and helpful hosts.
- Primitive Campsites: The core offering is well-maintained primitive camping areas within a beautiful pine forest. These sites are suitable for pitching tents or parking small RVs (less than 20 feet in length), though it's important to note there are no hookups for RVs at these specific sites. Each camping area can accommodate up to 8 campers (4 people per site) and includes:
- Fire Pit: Essential for campfires and cooking, with a complimentary bundle of firewood provided.
- Picnic Table: For convenient meal preparation and dining.
- Potable Water: Clean, fresh potable water is readily available from a spigot, just a short walk from the camping area (outside the sugar shack).
- Clean Outhouse: A well-maintained outhouse is located nearby the camping area, with toilet paper provided. This highlights their commitment to basic but clean facilities even in a primitive setting.
- On-Site Hosts and Support: Owners Bob and Sheila live on-site and are available 24/7. Their services include:
- Greeting at Check-in: A personal welcome and orientation to the property.
- Wilderness Advice & Tourist Information: Invaluable local knowledge, helping guests plan perfect hikes, paddles, and other activities in the surrounding Adirondacks. This personalized guidance is a significant advantage.
- Assistance with Issues: As demonstrated by the helpful response to a misplaced tent pole, the hosts are willing to go "above and beyond" to ensure a comfortable and stress-free stay.
- On-Property Exploration: Guests have direct access to the 50-acre property which features:
- Walking/Mountain Biking Trails: Numerous trails winding through diverse habitats, including wetlands and cliffs, for on-site recreation.
- Birding & Wildlife Viewing: The property's diverse habitats support abundant wildlife, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature observation.
- Winter Sports Access: In colder months, the property transforms into a winter wonderland with miles of trails suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and areas for sledding.
- "Leave No Trace" Ethos: The campground operates as a Leave No Trace area, requiring guests to carry out all trash, promoting responsible outdoor ethics.
- Parking: Space for several vehicles, including small RVs, is available at the camping area.
It's important to note that while Woodland Grove Camping offers primitive sites, Adirondack Adventure Base also provides other unique lodging options on the same property, such as glamping lean-tos, a treehouse, and a larger vacation rental (Camp Hatteras) with more amenities. However, the services specifically for Woodland Grove Camping focus on providing a comfortable and well-supported traditional tent/small RV experience.
Features / Highlights
Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base is distinguished by several key features and highlights that create a unique and highly praised Adirondack camping experience, particularly emphasizing peace, natural beauty, and personalized hospitality.
- Peaceful and Beautiful Setting: The campsite is nestled within a "beautiful and peaceful" open pine forest, providing a serene environment away from crowds. The overall "area is beautiful" and "very well-maintained," contributing to a relaxing atmosphere.
- Exceptional, Hands-On Hosts (Bob & Sheila): This is perhaps the most significant highlight. The owners are frequently praised for being "communicative and helpful hosts," going "above and beyond" with their hospitality. Their on-site presence means personalized "wilderness advice," "tourist information," and direct assistance (e.g., lending a tent) are readily available. This personal touch fosters a highly positive and stress-free experience.
- Extensive On-Site Exploration: The 50-acre Adirondack Adventure Base property itself is a treasure, boasting a "network of walking/mountain biking trails" that wind through "pristine, diverse habitats." This means guests have immediate access to varied terrain, including wetlands and cliffs, for exploration without even leaving the grounds.
- Authentic Adirondack Primitive Camping: For those seeking a genuine "Adirondack style Camping," Woodland Grove offers primitive sites with a fire pit (wood provided) and a picnic table, encouraging traditional outdoor living. It’s "camping without the crowds."
- Potable Water and Clean Outhouse: Despite being primitive, the availability of clean, potable water nearby and a "very well-maintained" outhouse (with toilet paper) significantly enhances comfort and convenience compared to truly remote backcountry camping.
- Access to Diverse Regional Adventures: The location provides "easy access of many nearby hikes and paddles," including proximity to Whiteface Mountain, Saranac Lake, and the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC). This allows campers to leverage the site as a base for a wide range of Adirondack activities.
- Pet-Free Environment: For guests who prefer an environment free of pets, Woodland Grove Camping is specifically designated as a "Pet Free" area.
- Unique Accommodations on Property: While Woodland Grove is primitive camping, the broader Adirondack Adventure Base offers other unique lodging options (glamping lean-to, treehouse, vacation rental), which might appeal to varying preferences within a group or for future visits, all managed by the same excellent hosts.
Promotions or Special Offers
Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base, run by the attentive owners Bob and Sheila, tends to focus on providing value through its personalized service and unique experience rather than traditional, widely advertised promotions. However, based on available information, there are pricing structures that offer inherent value for guests.
- Tiered Pricing for Guests: The base rate for Woodland Grove Camping is typically $59-$65 per night for two guests. There is an additional charge of $8 per additional guest, allowing for flexible pricing based on group size (up to 4 people maximum per site, or 8 across two sites if booked together). This transparent pricing ensures guests pay only for what they need.
- No Hidden Booking Fees (Direct Booking Advantage): While not an explicit "special offer," the website subtly promotes calling directly for "longer stays" to "save on booking fees." This is a common practice for smaller, owner-operated establishments, encouraging direct reservations over third-party platforms, which can result in cost savings for the customer.
- Complimentary Firewood Bundle: Each site includes a "complimentary bundle of firewood" for the campfire. This is a thoughtful amenity that adds value and convenience, as campers don't need to source or purchase initial firewood.
- Included Host Support & Local Advice: The invaluable "wilderness advice" and "tourist information" provided by Bob and Sheila are effectively a free, personalized guiding service. Their willingness to "go above and beyond" with assistance (like lending a tent) adds immense, unquantifiable value to the stay.
- Year-Round Booking: The ability to book year-round means flexibility for visitors to experience the Adirondacks in different seasons, though specific services and accessibility might vary (e.g., winter sports trails vs. hiking).
It is important to note that the provided information does not indicate common campground promotions such as:
- Seasonal Discounts (beyond potentially lower rates in off-peak periods, which are standard)
- Long-Stay Discounts (other than the suggestion to call for longer stays to save on booking fees)
- Referral Programs
- Membership Discounts
For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, or to inquire about any specific arrangements for longer stays or groups, it is always best to contact Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base directly via phone. Their personalized approach means they are likely open to discussing your specific needs and ensuring you get the best possible value for your Adirondack adventure.

Woodland Grove Camping at Adirondack Adventure Base Reviews
We had an incredible time staying at the Woodland Grove Campsite. The area is beautiful and peaceful, with tons to explore both on the Adventure Base grounds and in the surrounding region. Bob and Sheila were communicative and helpful hosts, providing information on the region and suggesting the perfect hike for us. We really enjoyed visiting. There is also potable water available, and the site is very well-maintained.
Jul 08, 2024 · Olivia VaiklaDuring my recent hiking trip at Whiteface Mountain, I stayed at the Adirondack Adventure Base. The owners, Bob and Sheila, went above and beyond the call of duty to make my stay comfortable and stress-free. After I unpacked my gear on the first day, I realized that I'd misplaced my tent poles. Bob quickly came to the rescue and generously allowed me borrow his family's tent. He even helped to set everything up in the dark. I am extremely grateful for the hospitality I received and would happily stay here again. Next time I will remember the tent poles, though!
Sep 22, 2020 · Joseph CroninWe spent a week at Adirondack Vacation Base and had an amazing time. We used Woodland Grove as our base camp for many adventures. Sheila and Bob gave us advice on places to hike, bike, paddle and fish and each experience was exactly what we were looking for. The care, craftsmanship and details of their property is amazing! The environment was peaceful. Great place to unplug! If you are looking for an unforgettable experience, you should stay at one of their offerings!
Jun 27, 2020 · Toni RiceWe stayed at the lean-to on Bob and Sheila’s property (which we also highly recommend) for two days, and then for a night in their campground. Our campsite had a nice picnic table and fire pit, and the outhouse is clean and spacious. We had the whole campground to ourselves for the night, so we got a lot of space and quiet. Sheila and Bob are super friendly and helpful. They gave us great recommendations for activities in the area - Sheila even mapped out for us beautiful canoeing routes through the ponds nearby. And their maple syrup is delicious! The campground is located on a wonderful 50 acre property that was built up entirely by them, and trails through it are well-marked. Would recommend a stay here!
