Winona / New River KOA Journey Introduce
Welcome to the Winona / New River KOA Journey in Huntsville, Tennessee, a campground designed to be more than just a stopover – it’s a launching pad for adventure, particularly for those passionate about off-roading and exploring the rugged beauty of the Cumberland Plateau. For Tennessee locals and visitors from surrounding states, this KOA presents a distinctive camping experience. It’s important to understand that this campground, while part of the well-known KOA network, offers a unique setup that caters to a specific kind of outdoor enthusiast. This detailed overview aims to provide you with a factual and engaging picture of what to expect, helping you decide if Winona / New River KOA Journey is the right fit for your next Tennessee outdoor getaway.
Winona / New River KOA Journey is located at 5760 River Rd, Huntsville, TN 37756, USA. Its address places it firmly within Scott County, Tennessee, a region celebrated for its extensive off-road trails and natural beauty. However, it's crucial for prospective visitors to note the drive to the campground: it's approximately 3 miles off the main road, characterized by narrow and winding stretches. This remote setting contributes to its appeal for those seeking an escape, but it also means that larger RVs or those unaccustomed to rural roads should plan their arrival carefully. Some visitors have mentioned thinking their GPS was off due to the remoteness, but rest assured, you are likely on the right track.
A unique aspect of this KOA's layout is that its "newer" campground section, offering full hookup sites, is not on the same property as the main office and older section. To reach the full hookup sites, campers need to drive back down the initial road, make a left turn, pass a church, and cross a railroad track. This separate, somewhat detached layout is an important detail for arrivals, especially after dark. The campground is well-suited for guests looking to access nearby ATV/SXS trails, being positioned as a premier destination for off-roading enthusiasts. While this provides excellent access to adventure, it also means the atmosphere, particularly on weekends, can be lively with "4 wheelers" and party groups, which might not suit all campers seeking complete tranquility.
As a KOA Journey, this campground generally aims to provide convenience for travelers. However, some aspects of its services and amenities, as noted by recent visitors, deviate from typical KOA expectations due to its unique layout and focus.
RV Sites: The campground offers full hookup RV sites (electric, water, sewer) in its newer section, as well as sites with just electric and water (no sewer) in the older section. The full hookup sites are described by some as being in an "overgrown field" with "very little gravel." KOA Journeys typically feature pull-through RV sites with 50-amp service, which this location provides.
Bathhouse and Showers: There is a new, clean bathhouse available. However, according to some reviews, there might be only one restroom for the entire campground, located near the office (a separate drive from the full hookup sites). While a KOA standard includes clean restrooms and showers, the accessibility across the spread-out property might vary.
Camp Store: A KOA convenience store is typically available, offering essentials and snacks. Reviewers have praised the staff in the store as "super nice and friendly."
Laundry Facilities: KOA campgrounds usually offer laundry facilities, which can be a great convenience for longer stays.
Wi-Fi: While generally offered at KOAs, connectivity can vary by site and location.
KampK9®: A dedicated pet park is a standard KOA amenity, providing a space for pets to play and socialize.
Customer Service: Several reviews highlight the staff as "kindest and helpful folks," "super nice and friendly," and "amazing," indicating a strong commitment to guest service, even amidst operational challenges.
Winona / New River KOA Journey offers a distinct set of features and highlights that appeal to a particular segment of outdoor adventurers, though some aspects might not align with every camper's expectations of a typical KOA.
Off-Roading Mecca: This campground is explicitly marketed as a premier destination for off-roading enthusiasts. Its proximity to ATV/SXS trails makes it an ideal basecamp for those who love to explore on four wheels, embracing the adventurous spirit of the region. The staff openly acknowledges that "the 4 wheelers love to party," indicating a vibrant, often lively atmosphere, especially on weekends.
Exceptionally Clean Facilities (where available): Despite some critiques of site maintenance, several reviewers consistently praise the cleanliness of the overall campground and particularly highlight the bathhouse as "exceptionally clean" and "super nice."
Dedicated and Friendly Staff: A recurring theme in positive reviews is the commendation for the staff. They are described as "wonderful," "kind," "helpful," and "amazing," often going out of their way to assist campers, including processing refunds when expectations aren't met.
Newer Office and Facilities: The presence of a "brand new large office" and an updated bathhouse suggests an investment in modern amenities, even if their operational status or accessibility across the disjointed property has room for improvement.
Stargazing Potential: Located in a more remote area, away from significant light pollution, the campground likely offers good opportunities for stargazing on clear nights, adding to the natural appeal for visitors.
Direct Access to Outdoor Activities: Beyond off-roading, the surrounding landscapes of Winona and the New River Gorge offer opportunities for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to immerse themselves in hiking, fishing, and exploring the Appalachian Mountains.

Winona / New River KOA Journey Reviews
One of the cleanest, well laid out, and wonderful staff we have ever experienced! They are the kindest and helpful folks! Campground is exceptionally clean and kept up! Would definitely come back!!
Jul 03, 2025 · Sydney SaylorWe've never actually left a campground before. This was the first. I feel bad about giving it a low star, but I feel they have a far way to go before being called a KOA.When we arrived, we saw a brand new large office which was closed and looked like never was used. There was a # on window to call when checking in. We called it. Lady said she had an emergency. To the left of us, was the "older" campground that had just electric, water/no sewer. We couldn't figure out where the 'newer' campground was. We had full hook up. The lady on the phone explained to us to go back where we came and turn left. So, it's not just left from the office; it's drive back down the road, turn left, pass a church, cross over a railroad track and its there. It's not even on the same property as the office. The $90+ a night site was a field of overgrown grass, very little gravel and looks like sat a few 'partiers' campers with 20 chairs in a circle. Someone else was using the water from our site. No amenities what so ever. If you wanted to use the restroom, you would need to get back in your car and drive up the street to where the office was. And then they only had one restroom for the entire campground stating well if you have full hook up you don't need to use their bathroom. Their playground didn't even sit near the camp sites. It was down the hill in back of the office near a railroad track. (I'm hoping the railroad track isn't being used.)This campground is mainly for people wanting to 4 wheel and party. It shouldn't be a KOA. The lady even told me Oh yeah, the 4 wheelers love to party. It should be marketed as such. We did not feel save. Anyone expecting to stay in a KOA campground will be disappointed. They did give us our money back and that's why I gave them 2 stars vs 1 star. I am grateful for that. Also, the drive to this campground is 3 miles off main road and is very narrow and windy. We were thinking our gps was off, but no..its definitely out there.
Apr 01, 2024 · A RellokaThis is brand new KOA! Visited during Aug 2024, travel solo. Very clean place even you can see the pictures, bathroom, wow! Defiantly plan come back WITH my family. Only cons is to get there might be little challenge - roads is very curved (have to take shoulder few time when larger vehicles passed by)
Sep 07, 2024 · Nick AspidowAmazing campground. Folks I am not sure what the previous reviews were about. But please take reviews with the grain of salt, this location was every bit as nice and easy to get in and out of. This was the wife's first time ever staying in a travel trailer at a campground. I chose this KOA because it was close to our home. But the wife actually enjoyed it. It was NOT a busy weekend. It was quiet. Now, understand this is an OHV campground. And they are several camp grounds in the area. But this campground is surrounded by all kinds of OHV trails. I can't say anything negative about this location. The staff was accommodating. The camp site was terrific. It had FHUs. And forgive me, but the Earth is not flat, so don't expect the sites to ever be. But be prepared if you're going to camp and don't blame the KOA for it's unlevel parking spots. Rain. Wear and Tear. Vehicles coming and going. All these things take a toll on the ground. Thankfully, I came prepared with enough blocks to big a small shelter....but seriously, I brought enough blocks to have the stabilizers out properly. And the few people that was with us on the property were nice and quiet too. We didn't hear them much ... which is probably what they wanted from us too. Bathhouses were amazing!! Huge!! Clean!! SOFT TOILET PAPER. I can't poop in the RV .... sorry, I'm a big guy!!! Shower was great!! I can't say anything negative about this location. And I've been to some less superior locations, and this KOA, rates up there as if it was Holiday style!! I hope to camp again, during a busy weekend, just to see if the experience would be much different. Thank you Winona KOA and staff for making my wife's first trip a lot easier!!
