Windy Hill Campground Introduce
For many Arizona residents, the call of the water is a powerful lure, especially when the desert heat becomes too intense. Windy Hill Campground, located on the shores of Arizona's largest lake, Roosevelt Lake, offers a prime destination for those seeking a lakeside escape. Situated within the sprawling Tonto National Forest, this campground provides a well-developed and accessible environment for a variety of campers, from RV enthusiasts to families with kids. With its scenic views of the lake and surrounding mountains, it is a place where you can relax, recreate, and reconnect with nature in a beautiful setting.
The campground has a reputation for being a great spot, with many visitors appreciating its spacious loops and scenic landscape. As the name suggests, it can get windy, but this often provides a welcome breeze during the warmer months. The sheer size of the campground, with hundreds of sites available, means there is usually a place to set up camp, even during busy periods. However, it's worth noting that its popularity can sometimes lead to a lively atmosphere, with some campers noting a bit of rowdiness, particularly on weekends. For those who prefer a quieter experience, a weekday visit might be more peaceful.
While some older reviews mention issues with cleanliness, recent public data highlights that the campground has made significant efforts to improve its facilities. The focus now is on providing a cleaner, more organized experience for all visitors. The presence of a host at the campground is meant to address these issues and ensure that rules and regulations are followed. It is a developed campground, a fact that many campers appreciate as it provides a higher level of comfort and security than primitive or dispersed camping.
Windy Hill Campground is located on an Unnamed Road, in Roosevelt, AZ 85545, USA, placing it directly on the shores of Roosevelt Lake. Its location makes it an easy drive for residents of both the Phoenix and Globe areas. From Phoenix, the trip is a scenic one, typically taking you along State Highway 87 to the junction with State Highway 188. From there, it's a direct drive to the lake.
Accessibility is a key feature of this campground. It is well-known for its paved loops, making it easy to navigate for both RVs and cars. A fully accessible boat ramp and fishing dock are available for easy lake access, which is a major draw for boaters and anglers. The campground also features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that a wide range of visitors can enjoy the site. While the main roads are in good condition, it's always wise to be prepared for the terrain of the national forest and any potential weather impacts. The campground's location on the lake's shore is a significant benefit, providing easy access to all the water-related activities that Roosevelt Lake is famous for.

May 13 · VanessaWhat an amazing weekend getaway at Windy Hill CG- Chipmunk Loop. Delayed in my review but went there a few months ago (Cinco de Mayo weekend I think) and it was peaceful beautiful and perfect. The grounds are kept immaculate by Dave the CG Host. He’s got tips and stories from his long standing stint there so you won’t be disappointed. The bathrooms were clean, no trash or weeds unkept. We had a single site with picnic table and fire ring. Plenty of space for our 10 man tent with some shade trees for hammock. Dave was very helpful, gracious, and professional in his duties and just had an all around great demeanor - sometimes you get the grumpiest unhelpful hosts and can put a real damper on the trip. Not Dave-he welcomed us then and we will happily return to Chipmunk Loop again in the future!
July 17 · Michelle SirenaWindy hill max length 32 feet per forest website. Coati is now max 20 as a 45 ft. Got caught and messed up in coati. Host does little to nothing. Tp and that is it. Same as last winter. Three campgrounds all practically parking lots while hundreds of good sites go fallow or locked. What a waste.
October 30 · diane offineerThis review is of the Coati Loop, been there 3 times, and only stayed at this loop.I adore this area, this loop has tent sights so that I can get away from the generator type folks with my tent. I love the peace and quiet that comes with my water front property. Mike, the host, does a great job keeping the restrooms clean and stocked. He likes to ride around and make sure things are going well. I would like to shout out to Debra, the host at the Cottonwood Cove day use area. She's fantastic and really cares about the visitors.Roosevelt, AZ is a cool getaway from my home with it's super interesting history and trails that satisfy a hiker of any level. I find something new to do each time I go out there to explore.
