Willow Lake Campground

Campground ★4.0

Pinedale, WY 82941, USA

4.0
This lake is stunning, however the campground is not. Not really an organized campground, no numbered sites, limited area to spread out. One restroom. Looks like a new boat ramp and dock was installed recently. Camping is free as of 6-2021 but a notice on the kiosk board notes a proposed fee of $10 in future. No tables, fire rings, water or trash. Note that the access road is very very steep narrow last 1 mile to get over the final ridge, so pulling a big trailer is a bit of a risk....however there were about 15 large trailers there when I visited, but no vehicles, no people no camps setup...seems the locals just stash and leave their trailers up there to hold down their spot..for how long is unclear. - Greg D. Willow Lake Campground Introduce

Hello, Wyoming locals! Are you ready to trade the everyday for the extraordinary and find a campsite that truly embodies the wild spirit of our state? Willow Lake Campground, located near the charming town of Pinedale, is a destination for those who appreciate raw, natural beauty over manicured sites. Situated on the stunning Willow Lake, this campground offers a rustic and authentic camping experience, inviting you to unplug and immerse yourself in the great outdoors. It is a place where the landscape, not the amenities, is the star of the show, providing a peaceful retreat for those who cherish solitude and self-sufficiency.

Willow Lake Campground is not your typical organized, numbered campsite. It's more of a dispersed camping area, allowing visitors to find their own spot to set up camp, which contributes to a feeling of freedom and being one with nature. This unorganized layout, while a departure from structured campgrounds, is a key part of its appeal for adventurers who prefer a more wild experience. As one reviewer mentioned, "This lake is stunning, however the campground is not. Not really an organized campground, no numbered sites, limited area to spread out." This description perfectly captures the essence of Willow Lake: a focus on the natural environment with minimal human-made intrusions.

The lake itself is the main draw, a beautiful body of water perfect for non-motorized recreation. It is an ideal spot for paddle boarding and kayaking, allowing you to peacefully glide across the water and take in the stunning scenery. One camper enthusiastically noted, "This place is perfect for paddle boarding or kayaking. No fee to camp or use of non motorized watercraft," a significant highlight for anyone who loves these activities. Recent improvements, such as a newly installed boat ramp and dock, make getting on the water even easier. While camping may have been free as of a recent visit, a proposed fee of $10 indicates that its popularity may be growing, so it’s wise to be prepared for this change.

For those who are prepared for a more basic camping experience, Willow Lake offers a genuine connection to the Wyoming wilderness. The lack of fire rings, running water, or trash service encourages a "leave no trace" mindset, a value held by many who respect the environment. While the approach road can be very steep and narrow in the last mile, making it a bit risky for large trailers, many large trailers have successfully made the journey, showing that with careful navigation, the reward is well worth the effort. Willow Lake Campground is a destination for those who seek adventure, solitude, and the unfiltered beauty of Wyoming.
