White Crack Campground

White Crack Rd, Moab, UT 84532, USA

5.0
Did White Rim trail with a 4wd, clockwise, over 3 days (8-10 May 2024) - first night in White Crack, second in Taylor.White Crack campground is a perfect halfway spot of the drive. It's a bit a bit exposed to the elements, however the views are spectacular. Including the sky at night. You can walk around the cliff tops for more amazing views. Well maintained vault toilet is there as well. We had a visit from a park ranger (hi Sierra if you're reading this :) who was very friendly and helpful. This campsite is hard to book, however keep checking for cancellations - we picked this up only a couple of weeks before the drive. - Magdalena Glanc

White Crack Campground Introduce

For Utah locals with a passion for rugged adventure and breathtaking desert landscapes, White Crack Campground offers an unparalleled backcountry experience deep within Canyonlands National Park, near Moab. This isn't a casual car camping spot; it's a coveted destination along the legendary White Rim Road, a multi-day 4x4 or mountain biking epic that demands preparation, skill, and a thirst for truly wild places. White Crack is renowned for its spectacular cliff-top views, incredibly dark night skies perfect for stargazing, and its position as a strategic halfway point on the challenging White Rim journey. It represents the quintessential Utah backcountry experience, blending exhilarating off-road travel with profound natural beauty and serene solitude. If you're a seasoned outdoors enthusiast living in Utah, looking to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring red rock country that defines our state, securing a spot at White Crack Campground should be high on your adventure list.

White Crack Campground is situated off White Crack Rd, Moab, UT 84532, USA, within the expansive and rugged terrain of Canyonlands National Park's Island in the Sky district. Its location is a key part of its allure and challenge. To reach White Crack, visitors must traverse a significant portion of the White Rim Road, a 100-mile loop that is considered moderately difficult for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles. The campsite itself is located about 1.5 miles off the main White Rim 4x4 Road via a rough spur trail. The White Rim Road itself features long, rocky stretches, areas of deep sand, and challenging sections like Murphy Hogback and Hardscrabble Hill. While a 4x4 vehicle with low range capability is essential, the scenery along the drive is just as much a part of the experience as the destination. Many visitors complete the White Rim Trail, including an overnight stay at White Crack, over 2 to 3 days by vehicle or 3 to 4 days by mountain bike (often with a support vehicle). Always check current road conditions with Canyonlands National Park before embarking on your trip, as conditions can change rapidly due to weather. The remoteness means no easy access to supplies once you're on the road.

White Crack Campground, like other backcountry sites along the White Rim Road, provides a minimalist approach to services, emphasizing self-sufficiency and the preservation of the natural environment. While basic, these provisions are crucial for a comfortable stay in such a remote area.

  • Designated Campsite: White Crack is a single, designated campsite (accommodating up to 15 people and 3 vehicles), providing a legal and established place to camp within Canyonlands National Park.
  • Well-Maintained Vault Toilet: A significant amenity for a backcountry site, White Crack features a well-maintained vault toilet, which is essential for proper waste disposal in this sensitive desert environment.
  • No Potable Water: There is no potable water available at White Crack Campground or along the entire White Rim Road. Visitors must carry in all their own water, with a minimum recommendation of one gallon (4 liters) per person per day, or more if engaging in strenuous activity.
  • No Shade or Shelter: The campsite is described as being "a bit exposed to the elements" with no natural shade trees directly at the site itself. Visitors should plan to bring their own shade structures.
  • Permit Required: An overnight backcountry reservation permit is mandatory to camp at White Crack. This permit must be obtained in advance from the Canyonlands National Park office and is highly sought after, often requiring booking months in advance, especially for popular spring and fall seasons.
  • No Fires Allowed: Open fires are prohibited at White Crack Campground to protect the fragile desert ecosystem. Visitors should plan for alternative cooking methods.

White Crack Campground is celebrated for several unique features and highlights that draw adventurers from across Utah and beyond:

  • Spectacular Views: The primary highlight of White Crack is its truly spectacular panoramic views. Situated on a cliff edge, it offers expansive vistas of the surrounding canyonlands, providing incredible backdrops for both sunrise and sunset. Visitors can explore the cliff tops for even more amazing perspectives.
  • Unparalleled Stargazing: Due to its extreme remoteness and minimal light pollution, the night sky at White Crack is nothing short of breathtaking. It's a prime location for stargazing, offering an unadulterated view of the Milky Way and countless stars, often a transformative experience for campers.
  • Strategic Location on White Rim Road: White Crack serves as an ideal halfway point for those undertaking the multi-day White Rim Trail loop, allowing for a convenient overnight stop that breaks up the challenging journey into manageable segments.
  • Rugged, Authentic Backcountry Experience: The difficult 4x4 access and exposed nature of the campsite contribute to an authentic backcountry adventure. This isn't glamping; it's a test of preparedness and a reward for perseverance, offering a genuine sense of solitude and accomplishment.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Be prepared for desert wildlife, particularly sneaky and quick mice. This is a common occurrence in desert environments, reinforcing the need to keep all food sealed tightly and trash secured at all times.
  • High Demand and Exclusivity: White Crack is consistently booked due to its popularity. This high demand, while making it challenging to reserve, also ensures a more exclusive and less crowded experience for those lucky enough to secure a permit. Tips include regularly checking for cancellations.
  • Park Ranger Presence: The occasional visit from friendly and helpful park rangers adds an element of safety and interaction, providing a sense of security even in such a remote location.
