The designation as a "remote lake campground" suggests that while it is accessible, visitors should anticipate a journey that leads them away from major population centers and perhaps onto less-traveled roads. This remoteness is a significant part of its appeal for those seeking a true escape into nature. For Michiganders traveling from larger cities like Grand Rapids, Traverse City, or even Detroit, the drive will be a conscious journey into more undeveloped areas, rewarding them with tranquility upon arrival.
Accessibility to individual sites might vary, as indicated by the review stating "Some sites more difficult to reach." This implies that while the campground itself is reachable, campers should be prepared for potentially uneven terrain or less developed paths to their specific chosen spot within the area. It suggests that a vehicle with some ground clearance might be beneficial, and planning for a bit of a rugged approach to certain campsites would be wise. Despite these potential minor challenges, the very nature of a "remote lake campground" means that the journey is part of the adventure, leading to an untouched and peaceful environment. The address provides the essential starting point for navigation, guiding locals to this unique primitive camping destination.

Whelan Lake Area Reviews
Undeniably a great place to camp. As long as you like no nonsense primitive camping.
May 26, 2025 · Chris JohnsonBeautiful remote lake campground. Some sites more difficult to reach.
Sep 26, 2021 · Jason DuncanIf you can find it, it's a pretty cool primitive campsite. Lots of open camp areas, many with lake views, and access. Google maps doesn't tell you accurate directions. You want to take the road wahlhalla north until you see the opening for 6661 is the road address. Take that straight for about 2 miles and you will see the one sign telling you that you arrived to a park. The camp sites only have fire pits. Everything else is up to you. Including trash. Unfortunately people leave their trash all over, and it's a shame. Because this is a free site which means people don't clean up after you like a mother would. So be respectful. Leave it cleaner than you got it.
Sep 21, 2020 · kenji steaksterPerfect for people who can camp without all the extras!
Jun 21, 2023 · Jess JohnsonCamped here as a kid. Now, years later my family and I go here. There are fish in the lake, bluegill and perch mostly. Also it is very swimmable. The trail to it gets muddy in the spring or after rain. It can be hairy in a sedan.
