Whether you're a seasoned camper or looking to introduce your family to the joys of the outdoors, West Star Lake Campground provides a fantastic setting. It’s known for its peaceful atmosphere and the stunning natural beauty that defines Wisconsin’s northern region. The clear, soft, sandy-bottomed waters of Star Lake itself are a major draw, inviting swimmers and paddlers to enjoy its refreshing embrace.
The West Star Lake Campground is situated in the heart of Wisconsin's Northwoods, specifically at Star Lake, WI 54561, USA. This location places it within the expansive Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, a jewel in Wisconsin's state park system. While it feels wonderfully secluded, access is relatively straightforward.
Reaching the campground typically involves navigating scenic Wisconsin highways and local roads. For those traveling from southern Wisconsin, routes often include Highway 51 north, eventually connecting to Highways M, N, and K, leading directly to the Star Lake area. While precise travel times will vary depending on your starting point within Wisconsin, it’s generally a manageable drive for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation for residents across the state. For instance, it's approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from major population centers like Green Bay or Appleton, and about an hour and a half from Wausau. The journey itself often provides a pleasant transition into the forested landscapes of the Northwoods, building anticipation for your arrival.
It’s important to note that while the campground offers a rustic experience, it’s still accessible by both cars and RVs, with back-in only sites available. However, potential visitors should be aware that the campground roads are not plowed in winter, meaning accessibility is dependent on snow conditions. A Wisconsin State Park & Forest Vehicle Admission Sticker is required for entry, which can be purchased daily or annually.

West Star Lake Campground Reviews
One of our favorites this year! Super clear water with soft sandy bottoms. Our site was on the water with our own access. Clean toilet stalls. Would highly recommend.
Sep 18, 2023 · Terri McKinneyQuiet camping right on the lake. Very peaceful. Small campground, divided into two loops. Upper loop is tree-covered, lower loop is open to the sky. Both are on the lake but boat ramp and beach are in the lower loop. There is a hand pump in each loop to get water, and a vault toilet in each loop.
Jun 09, 2022 · Dave OkonskiI always have a great time at Star Lake with my family. The camping sites are large and clean, the nature is beautiful, and obviously the lake is pretty cool. We take our boat and have fun tubing during the day!
Apr 22, 2024 · Dexter KrakerWe have camped up here for years and now the DNR has decided reservation only this year and you would think that they would have a large sign up. Read the fine print they have. And when we checked on the DNR website it said nothing and that was 8/16. Well they screwed up the population of the deer and turkey in this state by first the wolves in this state and now overpopulation of bobcats and birds of prey.
