West Blankenship River Access

Columbia Falls, MT 59912, USA

3.0
A bit of mud and high/low dips to access the camping area. But campers made it through: trailers, pop up trailers, camper vans, and roof top tent trucks as well as car campers. The river is beautiful and the area across the river has lots of birds that are nice to listen to. The area was clean. There is a porta potty but I did not check it out. Would definitely come back here when traveling thru again. - Shannon Petterson

West Blankenship River Access Introduce

For us Montanans, the call of the wild is a daily invitation, and few places capture the essence of our state's untamed beauty like the rivers that carve through its landscapes. West Blankenship River Access, located near Columbia Falls, is one such hidden gem – not a traditional campground with all the frills, but a highly sought-after spot for dispersed camping right on the Flathead River. This location offers a unique blend of accessibility and rugged charm, perfect for locals looking to truly immerse themselves in Montana’s renowned outdoor lifestyle without the constraints of a developed campsite.

West Blankenship River Access is renowned for its stunning riverfront setting, providing campers with breathtaking views, clear water for recreation, and a true sense of being in nature. It's a place where you can pull your camper right onto the rocky beach, listen to the diverse birdlife across the river, and enjoy the freedom that comes with dispersed camping. While it requires a bit of adventurous spirit to navigate the access road, the reward is an authentic Montana experience that keeps many local and traveling adventurers coming back for more. It's an ideal basecamp for exploring the surrounding Flathead National Forest and even the nearby Glacier National Park.

West Blankenship River Access is located near Columbia Falls, MT 59912, USA. Specifically, it's found near the Blankenship Bridge, where the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Flathead River converge. This location is remarkably convenient for Montana locals, being only about 15 minutes away from the west gate of Glacier National Park. This makes it an incredibly appealing base for those planning day trips into the iconic national park while seeking a more rustic or budget-friendly camping option outside the park's more regulated campgrounds.

Accessing the camping area involves navigating a dirt road with "a bit of mud and high/low dips." While not always a smooth ride, campers have successfully made it through with a variety of vehicles, including "trailers, pop up trailers, camper vans, and roof top tent trucks as well as car campers." High-clearance vehicles are often preferred for easier navigation, especially after rain or when water levels are high. Once past the initial access challenges, campers can choose to "park on the beach" for direct river access or find "spots that are more secluded" further from the main river bar. Despite its popularity, especially during peak season, its layout often allows for a sense of individual space, though you're "never far from other people either way." The proximity to Columbia Falls also means easy access to supplies and services if needed, striking a good balance between wilderness immersion and practical convenience.

As a dispersed camping area within the Flathead National Forest, West Blankenship River Access offers very limited, basic services. The philosophy here is "leave no trace," meaning campers are expected to be largely self-sufficient.

  • Undeveloped Campsites: The primary "service" is the availability of open space along the river for campers to set up their tents, park their RVs, or simply enjoy car camping. There are no designated, marked sites in the traditional sense, allowing for flexibility in finding a spot.
  • Porta-Potty: There is at least one porta-potty available in the area. While not a full restroom facility, it provides a basic option for human waste disposal, a crucial amenity in dispersed camping areas. It's important to note that cleanliness can vary.
  • River Access: Unimpeded access to the beautiful Flathead River for various recreational activities like fishing, swimming, and simply enjoying the water.
  • Fire Rings: While not always permanent structures, campers have reported the presence of fire rings, allowing for campfires (always check current fire restrictions and utilize existing rings, adhering to "Leave No Trace" principles).
  • Natural Beauty: The surrounding scenery, including the river, mountains, and abundant birdlife, serves as the primary "amenity," offering a serene and picturesque backdrop.
  • Free Camping: As a dispersed camping area on public land, camping at West Blankenship River Access is generally free, making it an excellent budget-friendly option for locals.

West Blankenship River Access is highly regarded for several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for outdoor enthusiasts in Montana.

  • Direct Riverfront Camping: The ability to camp "right on the beach" or very close to the "beautiful" Flathead River is a major highlight. This provides immediate access for swimming in the "clean water," fishing, or simply relaxing by the riverside.
  • Stunning Scenery: The "beautiful scenery" with mountain and river views, combined with the presence of "lots of birds that are nice to listen to" across the river, creates a picturesque and tranquil environment.
  • Accessibility for Various Vehicle Types: Despite initial concerns about the access road, the fact that a wide range of vehicles, including "trailers, pop up trailers, camper vans, and roof top tent trucks," can make it to the camping area is a significant advantage, broadening its appeal.
  • Proximity to Glacier National Park: Being only about "15 minutes from the west gate" of Glacier National Park makes it an ideal, free, and convenient base camp for exploring one of Montana's most iconic natural attractions.
  • Generally Clean Area: Campers frequently note that the area is kept "clean," which is commendable for a dispersed camping spot and speaks to the respect of many visitors and potential Forest Service oversight.
  • Sense of Community: While not offering absolute solitude, the ability to find "secluded" spots while still being "not ever far from other people" can foster a friendly, communal vibe among campers sharing the beautiful space.
  • Opportunity for Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting along the river, with its diverse birdlife, presents excellent opportunities for wildlife observation.
  • Dog-Friendly: As a dispersed camping area, it's generally a great spot for camping with dogs, as long as they are kept under control and owners practice responsible pet etiquette.
