Walter E. Stark Assembly Area and Horse Campground is located at 11871 Pillsbury Forest Rd SW, Pillager, MN 56473, USA. This address places it squarely within the renowned Pillsbury State Forest, Minnesota's first state forest, a sprawling natural preserve offering diverse landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities. For Minnesota residents, its accessibility is quite good, making it a viable option for a weekend trip or a longer stay.
To reach the campground from Pillager, you would typically take State Highway 210 East for about 1 mile, then turn left (north) and continue for approximately 3.5 miles on Pillsbury Forest Road directly to the horse camp. This straightforward route makes it easy to navigate, even with horse trailers. While it offers a secluded feel, the campground is not entirely isolated. Nearby towns, including Pillager and those in the wider Brainerd Lakes Area, provide access to essential amenities, supplies, and local attractions. This balance of remote wilderness and convenient access to town allows campers to enjoy the best of both worlds – deep forest immersion with the reassurance of nearby services if needed.
Walter E. Stark Assembly Area and Horse Campground is primarily a primitive campground, focusing on providing the core necessities for an authentic outdoor experience, especially for equestrians. As part of the Minnesota DNR's state forest campground system, it offers the following essential services:
- Campsites: The campground features 75 "primitive" campsites. Each site typically includes a cleared area for tents or RVs (maximum RV length is not explicitly stated but generally accommodates smaller RVs due to its primitive nature), a fire ring for campfires, and a picnic table. All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not typically taken, so planning for early arrival, especially on popular weekends, is advisable.
- Potable Water: Drinking water is available from hand pumps or spigots throughout the campground.
- Vault Toilets: Standard outhouse facilities are provided for sanitation.
- Garbage Cans: Designated receptacles for trash disposal are available to help maintain the cleanliness of the area. Campers are strongly encouraged to "pick up all your trash when you are finished camping" to preserve the natural environment.
- Equestrian-Specific Amenities: For horse campers, the campground provides permanent "picket lines" and "manure bunkers," essential for managing horses and maintaining site cleanliness. There is also plenty of parking available for horse trailers.
It is important for campers to be aware that this is a primitive campground, meaning there are no electrical hookups, modern flush toilets, or showers. Campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience and to be self-sufficient.
Walter E. Stark Assembly Area and Horse Campground stands out due to several key features that make it a highly desirable destination for specific types of outdoor enthusiasts, as highlighted by customer reviews and public information:
- Extensive Horse Trails: This is the primary highlight. The campground offers direct access to an impressive "27 miles of horse riding trails" within Pillsbury State Forest. These trails meander through diverse landscapes, including streams, lakes, and heavily forested areas, providing endless opportunities for scenic rides. This makes it an equestrian paradise.
- Secluded and Peaceful Atmosphere: Many campers value the "secluded enough that you don't run into too many people unless you want to" aspect. Despite some instances of neighborly disputes (as one review humorously detailed), the general environment is designed for tranquility, making it a great spot to "enjoy camping" away from crowds.
- Beautiful Scenery: Visitors consistently praise the "beautiful scenery" of the Pillsbury State Forest, which surrounds the campground. The landscape is dotted with "nice lakes all over" and offers a rich variety of deciduous and coniferous trees, creating a picturesque backdrop for all activities.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The diverse habitats of Pillsbury State Forest mean campers are likely to encounter various wildlife, from beavers in the many small ponds to a wide range of bird species, including bald eagles and osprey. The forest is also home to black bears, gray squirrels, and ruffed grouse.
- Dog-Friendly Environment: While requiring proper medication for ticks, the campground is amenable to "dog lovers," allowing them to bring their pets along for the adventure, making it a complete family outing.
- Proximity to Lakes and Fishing: Beyond the horse trails, the numerous lakes within Pillsbury State Forest offer opportunities for fishing. While Walter E. Stark is primarily an equestrian camp, nearby lakes provide additional recreational options.
- Accessible to Nearby Towns: Despite its secluded nature, the campground's location allows for convenient access to "nearby towns are fun" for any necessary amenities, supplies, or a change of scenery, providing a good balance between wilderness and convenience.
- Primitive Charm: For those who prefer a more authentic and less developed camping experience, the "primitive" nature of the sites, with basic amenities, is considered a positive feature.
A crucial note from reviews is the prevalence of ticks, strongly advising campers to "bring bug spray and make sure your dogs are on medication for it." Also, the request to "Please pick up all your trash when you are finished camping" emphasizes the importance of Leave No Trace principles in this natural setting.

Walter E. Stark Assembly Area and Horse Campground Reviews
Very fun forest, lots of ticks do bring bug spray and make sure your dogs are on medication for it. Had a blast camping here. Nice lakes all over, nearby towns are fun, secluded enough that you don't run into too many people unless you want to.Please pick up all your trash when you are finished camping. The spot we found must have been popular because there was quite a bit of trash we needed to clean up before setting up. I'm no tree hugger but pick up your cans and bottles
Jun 15, 2023 · KillerkramWe got a great spot! Beautiful scenery. Unfortunately our neighbor next door who came later in the day was a grumpy old lady who thought we needed to go to bed at 9pm! Seriously!!! We weren't loud but we did stay up and enjoyed our camping experience. She had the audacity to pound on our camper the next morning thinks ng she was waking us up, we were already awake. Don't know who she thought appointed her the go to bed committee, but it just made her look bad and the people she was with. Karma will visit her!! I just wish your camp site was bigger, expand for pete's sake! Maybe make one side for these grumpy ole ladies who want to go to bed with the chickens😂 but seriously have one side for these folks and the other side for people who want to enjoy camping. Please you need to expand, it's way too small in there.
