Verde Glen Campground Introduce
Tucked away in the serene Tonto National Forest, Verde Glen Campground offers a peaceful and refreshing escape just a short drive from Payson, Arizona. For those in search of a true retreat into nature without venturing too far from civilization, this campground provides the perfect balance. Situated along the East Verde River, the site is a haven for those who love the sound of flowing water and the feel of cool mountain air. While the reviews mention a more primitive feel and the need to be prepared, it is this very characteristic that makes it a great choice for local Arizonans seeking a genuine outdoor experience. The campground is known for its beautiful, wooded setting, where towering trees provide ample shade and a sense of being deep in the woods, even though you are surprisingly close to the town of Payson. It’s a great destination for a quick weekend trip, allowing you to easily get away from the city's heat and noise and immerse yourself in a different, more tranquil environment.
Verde Glen is a popular spot, and for good reason. Its setting on the East Verde River means that water activities are a huge draw for visitors, from fishing to simply cooling off on a hot summer day. The area is a fantastic place for families, providing a natural playground for children to explore. The rustic charm of the campground encourages a back-to-basics approach to camping, where the focus is on enjoying the natural surroundings rather than on modern amenities. This campground is a testament to the beauty of Arizona's high country, offering a stark contrast to the desert landscapes many Arizonans are accustomed to. It’s a place where you can relax by the river, listen to the whisper of the wind through the trees, and truly disconnect from the digital world.
Verde Glen Campground is located near Payson, Arizona, USA, off of Houston Mesa Road. Its address is simply listed as Payson, AZ 85541, USA, as it is a less-developed forest service site rather than a commercial campground with a precise street address. This proximity to the town of Payson is a significant advantage, making it relatively easy to access for anyone traveling from the Phoenix metropolitan area or other parts of central Arizona. The drive is scenic and manageable, with the road to the campground being a mix of paved and dirt sections. While a 20-year-old Honda CRV can make the journey, as one reviewer noted, it is important to be mindful that the dirt road can be dusty and bumpy. This is a common feature of many Tonto National Forest campgrounds and adds to the feeling of being "out in the woods." The ease of access, combined with its secluded feel, makes it a highly convenient option for local campers who want to maximize their time in nature and minimize their time on the road. Despite its popularity, the campground maintains a sense of being a peaceful retreat, far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Running Water: Unlike many primitive campgrounds in the area, Verde Glen Campground offers running water, which is a significant convenience for campers. While this amenity is noted, it is wise to confirm its availability with the Tonto National Forest office, as conditions can change. Having access to running water makes it easier to clean up and can be a huge help for families, making the trip more comfortable.
Tent Sites: The campground is well-suited for tent camping, with sites that are clean and provide plenty of space for setting up a tent. While the area can be small and parking is limited, the sites themselves are designed to accommodate campers who prefer the traditional tent experience. They are often nestled among the trees, offering a rustic feel and natural shelter from the elements.
Good for Kids: Verde Glen Campground is an excellent place for children. The proximity to the East Verde River provides a natural playground for kids to splash and explore. The ability to be in a natural environment encourages imagination and physical activity. The campground's family-friendly atmosphere means that it is a common destination for groups, creating a welcoming and fun environment for young campers.
On-site Parking: Parking is available on-site, which is a key feature for campers. However, it's important to be aware that it can be limited, as noted by a past visitor. Campers should plan accordingly and try to arrive early to secure a spot, especially on popular weekends like Memorial Day. While the parking can be tight for large groups, individual vehicles and small groups can usually find a space to park and set up camp.
Dogs Allowed: Pets are welcome at Verde Glen Campground, allowing you to bring your furry friends along for the adventure. This is a significant plus for many Arizonans who want to share their love of the outdoors with their dogs. As with any public land, it is essential to keep dogs on a leash and to be responsible pet owners by cleaning up after them.
East Verde River Access: The most notable highlight of Verde Glen is its location on the East Verde River. This provides opportunities for fishing, wading, and simply enjoying the soothing sounds of the water. It’s a rare and valuable feature in an arid state like Arizona, offering a unique and refreshing experience for campers. The river is the centerpiece of the campground and a focal point for many recreational activities.
Close to Payson: Despite its secluded feel, the campground is remarkably close to the town of Payson. This proximity provides a safety net for campers, as stores, gas stations, and other services are just a short drive away. This makes it an ideal spot for those who are new to camping or who simply want the convenience of being near amenities. You can enjoy a day in the wilderness and still easily grab a forgotten item or a meal in town.
Beautiful Scenery and Tree Cover: The campground is set in a beautiful, forested area of Tonto National Forest. The abundant tree cover provides much-needed shade during the warmer months and adds to the picturesque quality of the landscape. The combination of the river, trees, and mountain air creates a tranquil and scenic environment that truly feels like a getaway.

Phone: (928) 474-7900
The phone number provided is for the Tonto National Forest Payson Ranger District. As a forest service campground, reservations are typically not accepted, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The best way to get up-to-date information on fire bans, road conditions, or other regulations is to contact the Tonto National Forest office directly. While the campground is managed by the Forest Service, there is not a specific contact person or on-site staff, so it is crucial to be self-sufficient and prepared.
Verde Glen Campground is an excellent choice for a variety of reasons, especially for those in Arizona seeking a convenient yet authentic camping experience. The campground's location on the East Verde River is its most compelling feature, offering a refreshing and unique element that many other sites lack. The ability to have running water and be able to bring your dog are also significant benefits that make it a more comfortable and accommodating choice for families and pet owners. While the on-site parking can be limited, the fact that there is parking at all, along with tent sites, makes it accessible to many. The close proximity to Payson provides peace of mind and the convenience of being able to restock supplies if needed. The friendly, professional atmosphere and the feeling of being "out deep in the woods" while still being so close to town make it a perfect destination for both seasoned campers and those new to the experience. It’s a place where you can trade city life for the tranquility of a forest, the gentle murmur of a river, and the vast, starry Arizona sky, making it a truly valuable and worthwhile choice for your next outdoor adventure.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We went here during the Memorial day weekend. The loud music and even band performance winded down around 10 pm and we were grateful about that. The road was manageable with a 20 years old Honda CRV. The dirt is everywhere, some teenagers drove toy cars around the camping area, which was annoying. It was relatively clean, we didn't use the toilet though. The temperature is pretty low during the night.
May 26 · BlueShirt InABlueBoxGreat place to camp! Close to Phoenix and real easy to get too. Close to the town of Payson but you still feel like you are out deep in the woods. The sites are very clean and there are plenty of fire rings. The area is small so don’t go in large groups of vehicles. Parking is limited. There are no amenities and you better bring your own firewood.
June 08 · Dan & Bri's AdventuresOur family's getaway. MY 2 siblings and all of our kids and dogs go camping at least once a month to Verde Campground.
May 06 · Gladys MonjeMay 2025: the creek is completely dry. Camping is right near the road in this area.
May 25 · CraigNo longer a campground, no camping 200 feet near the Creek. Supposed to be about a frog and may be. Most likely people who camp once and leave trash and don't actually are about the land.
