Nestled within the secure confines of the Coast Guard base in Petaluma, this "lovely little spot" offers a sense of safety and tranquility often hard to find elsewhere. It’s an exclusive retreat designed to provide comfortable and scenic accommodations for those who have served or are serving, and their families.
This campground isn't just about parking your RV; it's about enjoying a peaceful environment with beautiful views of rolling hills, ample space between sites, and the distinct advantage of being on a military installation. Guests consistently praise the well-kept sites and the serene atmosphere, often spotting local wildlife like deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of birds. Beyond the natural beauty, the ability to utilize base amenities, such as the culinary school's dining facility, adds an exceptional layer of convenience and value to the stay. For eligible California residents seeking a secure, well-maintained, and affordably priced camping experience in a beautiful setting, the USCG TRACEN Petaluma Campground & RV Area is an outstanding choice that offers much more than just a place to stay.
The USCG TRACEN Petaluma Campground & RV Area is strategically located at 599 Tomales Rd, Petaluma, CA 94952, USA. This address places it approximately seven miles west of the vibrant city of Petaluma, set amidst the picturesque rolling hills of Sonoma County. The campground is situated directly on the United States Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Petaluma base, often referred to as "Two Rock," which is a key element of its unique appeal and access requirements.
Access to the campground is strictly controlled, as it is located within an active military installation. Authorized users, including active duty military, their dependents, retired military and their dependents, civilians employed by the Coast Guard, and others as authorized by TRACEN Petaluma, must pass through the main gate. All adults must have a valid ID to enter the front gate, and drivers must have valid vehicle registration and proof of insurance. If an ID states 'Federal Limits Apply,' a second federally recognized ID is required, and access may only be as a sponsored guest. Foreign nationals require vetting at least 30 days in advance. This secure environment is a significant draw for many eligible patrons, providing a heightened sense of safety.
Despite being on a base, the campground's location offers excellent regional accessibility. Petaluma itself is a charming city with a wide array of shops, restaurants, and services. Furthermore, the campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the renowned Northern California Wine Country (Sonoma and Napa Valleys), the stunning Pacific Coast (Dillon Beach, Bodega Bay, Point Reyes National Seashore), and even the iconic attractions of San Francisco (approximately 35 minutes away in good traffic). This balance of secure, secluded camping with easy access to major California attractions makes it a highly desirable destination for eligible California residents.

However, for potential tent campers (if allowed), their proximity to such facilities might be a factor.
- Dump Station: A dump station is available on base (off Colorado Rd) for RV waste disposal, a crucial service for RV campers.
- Recreation Equipment Rental: The MWR (Morale, Well-Being and Recreation) program offers a great program for loaning out recreation equipment such as bicycles, coolers, golf clubs, lanterns, sleeping bags, and tents for on-base use, and possibly for exploring the local area.

- Secure Environment: Located on a Coast Guard base, the campground offers an exceptionally secure environment, providing peace of mind for campers.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash and cleaned up after continuously.
- Exclusive Access: The campground is exclusive to active duty military, retired military, and other eligible personnel, creating a unique community atmosphere and enhanced security.
- Beautiful Views: Campsites offer lovely views of rolling hills and natural landscapes, providing a serene backdrop for your stay.
- Spacious Sites: The sites are well-spaced, offering good privacy and room for campers to relax comfortably. They are also paved and generally level.

- Proximity to Northern California Attractions: It serves as an excellent base for exploring Sonoma and Napa Wine Country, the Pacific Coast, and the cultural attractions of San Francisco.
- Small and Quiet: With only a limited number of spots (around 6 RV sites), the campground maintains a small, quiet, and peaceful atmosphere.
- Dedicated MWR Support: The Morale, Well-Being and Recreation (MWR) team is dedicated to making stays enjoyable, offering various services and equipment rentals.

A really lovely little spot.We ended up coming last minute when another campground didn’t work out. It’s actually quite lovely, good space between sites, and pretty views. It’s on the Coast Guard base so honestly you couldn’t feel much safer. We saw deer, wild Turkey, and lots of birds.Be aware that you do need to be active duty or retired military to book these.
May 03, 2021 · JohannaVery nice basic campground for RV's . Just 6 spots with beautiful views of rolling hills. Only 30amp power and water but there is a dump off colorado rd. Temps were in the high 60s with a nice breeze. Paved spots. One of the perks is being able to use Hailey hall ( galley) as you are a visiter at camp you can go for breakfast lunch and dinner. Very reasonable prices! ( it's the culinary school dining facility)
Aug 09, 2024 · Debbie RiversFull hookups would be great and the smell of the cows can be overwhelming. Great spot on base near a fishing pond and nice playground and recreational area. Dump station is hard to manuever with larger rigs since you have to use congested parking lots to turn around in
