★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My family and I camped in site 5 in the Upper Tonto Creek Campground on a Tuesday in July. The campground was mostly quiet, with only one other site occupied and few vehicles going by on the road in the night. There was some noise from cows in the night.Site 5 had room for our car and minivan to park, a good choice of places to set up our two large tents, lots of shade from the tall trees, plenty of room for the children to explore, and many large but low rocks for children to play on. A bit of trash was scattered about from previous users, but not more than we could pick up with half an hour's work. The restrooms looked clean and did not smell worse than other pit toilets we have used. The other sites in the campground appeared to be smaller than ours. The hosts were pleasant and helpful. We enjoyed hiking the adjacent Horton Creek Trail and taking our young children down the hill to play in Tonto Creek. Nearby Payson was having an "excessive heat" day, but temperatures in the campground were pleasant for most of the hours we were there. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely come here again.
July 17 · DeneneNew Airstream Basecamp Owner on first camping experience greatly helped by Ken, the Campground Host. He recommended the best site for a trailer, came over and helped the driver backing in her spot, answered questions on operating some of the BaseCamp features and gave advice on fishing conditions. Ken was awesome and very kind. He keeps the campground and bathrooms in excellent condition. We had a wonderful time!
April 13 · Peter GallagherWe stayed here October 5th and 6th and loved it! There are 9 campsites at this location and they are first come first serve. Each site has a metal fire ring, with a grate, and a picnic table. The host is Ken and he is friendly and keeps the place clean, including the restrooms. Note - I read a couple of bad reviews about him. If you break the rules he will call you out on it. If you follow the rules then he is great! The campground is quiet and there are a few flat spots for tents and plenty of trees for hammocks. The Horton Creek trailhead is right next to the campground and provides lots of fun exploring for all ages.
October 07 · Dwight WoodAwesome camp host. He was around cleaning and checking on things 4 times a day. Nice big spots with big mature pines for shade.
September 08 · Carol DuffyThis campground is surrounded by mountains with plenty of hiking and off road trails and outdoor activities. Definitely worth spending the weekend here!
