Upper Pinal Campground

Campground ★4.0

Globe, AZ 85501, USA

4.0
I thought this place was awesome, nice views of the desert and they even have a clean toilet! No problem getting up here in a Nissan Murano in dry conditions but I wouldn't want to in any other. Definitely worth it if you like camping in new spots. Steep cliffs make it a very scenic drive from desert to pine trees. - Adrian Rodriguez

Upper Pinal Campground Introduce

Welcome to Upper Pinal Campground, a hidden gem nestled in the stunning Pinal Mountains just outside of Globe, Arizona. For those of us living in Arizona, we know that the state's diverse landscapes offer an unparalleled variety of outdoor experiences. Upper Pinal Campground stands out by providing a unique high-elevation camping retreat that feels worlds away from the desert floor, yet remains a manageable drive for those seeking a tranquil escape. This is a place where the scenic beauty of the transition from arid desert to cool pine forests is not just a backdrop but a core part of the adventure.

This campground is not your typical RV park with full hookups and extensive amenities. Instead, it offers a more rustic and authentic camping experience, perfect for those who appreciate getting back to nature. It is a place for the adventurous, the nature lovers, and the families who want to show their children the raw, unfiltered beauty of Arizona's high country. The atmosphere here is one of peaceful solitude, with only a few designated spaces available, ensuring that your time is truly your own. Whether you are looking for a new spot for a weekend getaway or a scenic base camp for exploring the Pinal Mountains, Upper Pinal Campground provides a memorable setting that is well worth the journey.

Our goal is to give you an honest and informative look at what makes this campground a special destination. We want to help you prepare for a trip that will be both rewarding and safe. The journey to Upper Pinal is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself, with breathtaking views and a sense of discovery around every turn. From the majestic desert vistas to the cool, fragrant pine trees, the change in scenery is dramatic and unforgettable. We believe that this natural transition is a key reason why so many Arizona locals are drawn to this particular spot.

Location and Accessibility

Upper Pinal Campground is located near Globe, Arizona, at an elevation that provides a welcome respite from the desert heat. The address, Globe, AZ 85501, USA, is a general reference, as the campground is situated on forest service land. The journey to the campground is a notable aspect of the experience. It requires a drive on what can be a challenging road, and based on visitor experiences, a high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended. The road is steep and winding, and while a vehicle like a Nissan Murano might make it in dry conditions, a 4x4 or at least a vehicle with good ground clearance is the safest bet, especially if there has been recent precipitation.

The drive itself is incredibly scenic. It takes you on a dramatic climb from the arid desert landscape, characterized by cacti and rugged rock formations, into a lush environment of pine trees. This transition is truly remarkable and provides some of the most beautiful views in the region. However, it is important to check weather conditions before you go, as snow in the higher elevations can make the road impassable, as one camper experienced when they were unexpectedly snowed in. This remoteness is a key feature of the campground, providing a sense of seclusion and adventure that is hard to find in more developed areas. The on-site parking is limited to the designated spaces, reinforcing the primitive nature of the site.

Services Offered

  • Tent sites: The campground offers three designated spaces for tent camping.

  • Picnic tables: Each of the three camping spaces is equipped with a picnic table for your convenience.

  • Fire rings: Every site includes a fire ring, perfect for campfires and cooking, though visitors should always be aware of and follow current fire restrictions.

  • Public restroom: A clean public restroom with running water is available, which is a significant amenity for a primitive campground.

Features and Highlights

  • Scenic Views: The most prominent feature of this campground is the breathtaking scenery. The drive up offers panoramic views of the desert and dramatic cliffs, while the campground itself is nestled among pine trees, providing a completely different but equally beautiful vista.

  • Primitive Camping Experience: With only a few sites, the campground provides a secluded and peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for campers who enjoy a more rustic and less crowded setting, far from the noise of more developed sites.

  • High Elevation: The elevation offers a cool and pleasant climate, especially during Arizona's hot summer months. It's a fantastic escape from the heat of the lower desert regions.

  • Good for Kids: Despite its rustic nature, the campground is considered good for kids. The natural environment provides an excellent opportunity for children to explore and learn about nature, and the presence of amenities like the restroom adds a layer of comfort for families.

  • Running Water: The availability of running water in the restroom is a major highlight for a primitive campground and a welcome convenience for all campers.

What is Worth Choosing Upper Pinal Campground

Choosing Upper Pinal Campground is a decision to embrace an authentic and rewarding Arizona camping experience. What makes this spot truly special is its unique combination of seclusion and accessible amenities. It strikes a perfect balance between a remote, primitive camping adventure and the basic comforts that make a trip more enjoyable, such as a clean restroom with running water. Unlike many other dispersed camping areas, you have a designated, maintained site with a picnic table and fire ring, which adds a layer of convenience without taking away from the rugged feel.

The journey is a significant part of the allure. The transition from the arid desert landscape to the cool, high-elevation pine forest is a dramatic and memorable one. This is not just a place to pitch a tent; it's a destination that offers a true sense of escape and a chance to witness the incredible ecological diversity of our state firsthand. For Arizona locals, it’s a perfect spot to find refuge from the summer heat and to experience a side of the Pinal Mountains that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The limited number of sites also means you'll have a peaceful, uncrowded experience, which is a rare and valuable commodity in today's world. For those with the right vehicle and a taste for adventure, Upper Pinal Campground is a must-visit destination that promises stunning views and a tranquil retreat.
