Union Bay Campground Reviews
The park itself is nice..good location, well maintained facilities, friendly staff. Nice and quiet and beautiful views of the lake. The campground hosts were nice and we loved the board games they had available to borrow! The layout of the actual campsites was bad. The power boxes and fire pits were poorly placed in many of the sites. Also, deceptively uneven sites compared to pictures online. The site we originally booked (#72) was fairly small, which was fine, with only one real way to park our 30’ 5th wheel. However, the power box was in the opposite corner and our 50+’ extension cord was short by 10’. We went back to the registration station and the staff member said they had extra extension cords — I’m guessing because other people had the same problem we did.We ended up switching sites but even that was difficult because so many of the sites big enough for our trailer had poorly placed fire pits and power boxes or were extremely uneven. The dump station was angled in the wrong direction to dump all of our waste water (happens at a lot of parks but still annoying!).Overall we enjoyed our stay but were not happy with the actual layout of the sites.
May 22, 2025 · Susan BeckmanAmazing place to camp. Site 12 was beautiful and grassy and site 18 was beautiful and literally bright on the lake and the bathrooms were clean
Jun 28, 2025 · Emma NorwoodThe campground itself is nice, and has some great spots with a view of Lake Superior if you’re lucky or book out soon enough during the peak season (they fill up really fast). If you come during the summer, be prepared for an onslaught of black flies that will only be blown away if it’s windy. The only complaint I have is that the bathrooms were FULL of dead flies immediately after our 3pm check-in. They have a sign that says bathrooms will be closed for cleaning between 1 and 3 PM, but there was way more than a couple hours’ worth of dead flies in there. Not the end of the world, but it wouldn’t hurt for staff to try and wipe things down more frequently during bug season, at least where people have to wash their hands over bug corpses. It can get windy close to the lake and the lake is also quite loud, so if you’re a tent camper or light sleeper, make sure you’re staked down securely or pick a spot back from the water.
Jun 28, 2024 · ElizabethThe campsites were okay but too close together with too few trees for my taste. I recommend choosing one of the sites right on Lake Superior for the best access to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. There is also great hiking in the area near the campground.
Aug 01, 2024 · Garrett McFarlaneWe were tent camping here for several days. Our particular campsite (#4) was excellent, but some neighboring ones were swampy with standing water. It was large enough for a 6 and 2-person tent, pavilion, and van; some sites were smaller. The beach area is actually a bunch of shale rocks jutting out into the lake, which is cool for exploring, but there are sandy beaches along the road leading to the park if you're looking for that. The Park staff was very helpful and the bathrooms and showers are clean. There's a camp store within walking distance with firewood, basic supplies, and ice cream. The Visitor Center is a short drive away and has plenty of information about the park and public WiFi.
