4.0
Currently closed due to Covid-19. No fire ring. Has flushing toilets. Lots of space between sites. Have to drive through a busy park. From Toyon you can hike Phleger Estates. Phleger Estates is an area to hike around Redwoods and fern. There is no structure to visit. Long but easy hike. Water from campsites and picnic area is brown. During the summer, the stream is dry. There is a small area where the water percolate from the ground then disappear back into the ground. Very busy with hikers. - Vincent Tang

Location and Accessibility

Toyon Campground is conveniently situated at Campground Trail, Redwood City, CA 94062, USA. This location places it within the beautiful and expansive open spaces of the San Mateo County area, providing a natural escape that is remarkably accessible from major population centers across the San Francisco Bay Area. For Californians, this means a relatively short drive from cities like San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland, making it an ideal choice for a weekend getaway or even a day trip combined with an overnight stay.

Accessing Toyon Campground involves driving through a typically busy park area before reaching the more secluded camping sites. This journey, while possibly encountering some activity from other park users, ultimately leads to a tranquil environment. The campground's embeddedness within a larger park system highlights its commitment to preserving natural habitats while offering public access. Its position also grants direct pathways to some of the most scenic hiking trails in the region, including those within the adjacent Phleger Estates, making it a strategic base for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors should always check for any road closures or access restrictions, especially during peak seasons or due to local events, to ensure a smooth arrival.

Services Offered

Toyon Campground provides a set of fundamental services designed to facilitate a comfortable group camping experience within its natural setting. While not a full-service RV park, it offers key amenities that enhance a rustic outdoor stay:

  • Flushing Toilets: A significant convenience for campers, the campground is equipped with flushing toilets, offering a more comfortable and hygienic restroom experience compared to pit toilets found in more remote areas.
  • Ample Space Between Sites: One of the standout features is the generous spacing between individual group sites. This design ensures privacy and a sense of seclusion for each group, even when the campground is fully occupied.
  • Access to Drinking Water: Water is available at campsites and picnic areas. However, it is important to note based on past feedback that the water may appear brown. Campers should be prepared to filter or treat this water, or bring their own supply, especially for drinking.
  • Picnic Areas: While not explicitly detailed, it is customary for group campgrounds of this nature to provide picnic areas or designated spaces within each group site for meal preparation and dining.

It is important for potential visitors to be aware of certain limitations: there are no fire rings at the campground, meaning campfires are not permitted. Additionally, during the summer months, the nearby stream tends to be dry, with only a small area where water percolates from the ground. Campers should plan accordingly, especially concerning water needs and cooking methods that do not involve open flames.

Features / Highlights

Toyon Campground's allure extends beyond its basic amenities, offering several unique features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for group campers in California:

  • Exclusively Group Sites: Unlike many campgrounds that cater to individual campers, Toyon Campground is entirely composed of group sites. This makes it an ideal venue for large family gatherings, scout troops, school trips, or any organized group seeking a dedicated space.

This expansive open space preserve is known for its beautiful hiking trails that wind through groves of majestic redwood trees and lush fern forests. It offers a significant advantage for nature lovers and hikers.
  • Old-Growth Redwood Forests: Hiking in Phleger Estates from Toyon Campground allows visitors to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of ancient redwoods. These towering trees create a unique, serene atmosphere and are a defining feature of the Northern California landscape.
  • Secluded and Spacious Layout: Despite being accessible from a busy park, the campground itself is designed with ample space between sites, providing a sense of seclusion and privacy for each group. This design contributes to a more intimate and peaceful camping experience.
  • Nature Immersion: While there are no specific structures to visit within Phleger Estates, the focus is purely on nature immersion. The long but generally easy hikes through redwoods and ferns offer a wonderful opportunity for quiet contemplation and appreciation of the natural environment.
  • Busy Hiking Area: While the campground itself offers solitude, the surrounding Phleger Estates can be very busy with hikers. This presents an opportunity for people-watching and experiencing the vibrant outdoor community of the Bay Area.
