Location and Accessibility
Tortilla Recreation Site is located at Apache Junction, AZ 85119, USA. Its precise location is along the scenic Apache Trail (State Route 88), just before the historic Tortilla Flat. This is a crucial detail for visitors, as the drive itself is a major part of the adventure. The Apache Trail is known for its stunning vistas, winding turns, and single-lane bridges, which add to its unique charm. This is a point noted by campers, particularly those with larger RVs, who mention that the road requires cautious driving and can be challenging for rigs over 30-32 feet. Its proximity to Apache Junction means that while you feel far away in the wilderness, you are still within a reasonable distance of a city with grocery stores, gas stations, and other services. The campground is well-equipped to handle visitors, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, which speaks to its commitment to inclusivity. On-site parking is available for all sites, ensuring that you have a dedicated spot for your vehicle. The tiered layout of the campground, as noted in reviews, provides beautiful views from most sites but can present a challenge for maneuvering large trailers, so campers should be prepared for tight turns, especially in the lower levels.

What is worth choosing
Tortilla Recreation Site is a great choice for a camper who wants to experience the raw beauty of the Arizona desert without completely giving up essential comforts. What makes this campground particularly worthwhile is its prime location on the Apache Trail. The journey to the site is an adventure in itself, and once you arrive, you are perfectly positioned to explore some of Arizona's most iconic scenery and attractions. The campground’s direct access to hiking trails is a significant draw, offering opportunities for both a short walk and a more strenuous trek through the Superstition Wilderness. For families, the presence of kid-friendly hikes and a general atmosphere that is good for children makes it a top-tier destination. The availability of water and sewer hookups, while not including electricity, is a valuable service for many RVers who are self-sufficient with power but appreciate the convenience of managing their water and waste on-site.
The site's unique highlights—its proximity to the one-of-a-kind Tortilla Flat and its incredible scenic views—truly set it apart. It’s not just a place to park; it's a destination that offers a blend of natural beauty and historical charm. The well-maintained restrooms and dedicated picnic facilities show that the site is well-managed and cared for. While a camper with a very large RV (over 32 feet) might find the narrow, winding road and tight turns challenging, those with smaller rigs or tents will find it to be an ideal and picturesque spot. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beautiful drive to get to the flats, and a great place to eat and do a little shopping. We continued on all the way to the Roosevelt Dam.
February 25 · Terry PoolThis is a campground. Most of the sites are closed on the top level. There’s a few available in the lower level. We had a hard time maneuvering our 30 foot trailer into the spot. It was a really tight turn. Sites are water and sewer. No electricity.
December 31 · Nelida SafritNice and quiet. H2O + sewer in most sites. No power, but no problem with a good solar system. They call it Tortilla Flats, but it is really more like a bowl. 5 bars of verizon, aka good enough for streaming. Starlink should work, too, but we did not bother setting ours up for 6 nights... The nearest grocery store or gas station is about 15 miles and a 30 min or so drive from here. The road in/out is not for the faint-hearted: many blind 15 - 20 mph curves on a fairly narrow hilly road. We towed a 36-foot 5th wheel in aka it is doable, but carefully. The drive in the truck only is slow, but stunning....

November 27 · John WittWe loved our stay at Tortilla Flats RV Campground! Cindy and Frank were incredibly friendly hosts. The bathrooms were clean and had flush toilets (a huge plus!), and the sites were freshly raked and well-maintained. Can’t wait to come back and enjoy this spot again!
