Thousand Trails Medina Lake (RV Campground) Introduce
For Texas locals seeking a spacious and serene RV getaway, Thousand Trails Medina Lake RV Campground in Lakehills offers a unique retreat in the heart of the picturesque Hill Country. While some may associate Medina Lake with its historically high water levels, this Thousand Trails preserve provides a compelling experience centered on peace, abundant wildlife, and a relaxed atmosphere, regardless of the lake's current state. It's an ideal destination for RVers who value a quiet environment, ample space, and the chance to observe nature, all within reach of local attractions.
The "wilderness vibe" of Thousand Trails Medina Lake is consistently highlighted by visitors who appreciate its expansive grounds and natural beauty. It's a place where you're likely to encounter deer roaming freely, adding to the sense of being truly "out of the way." Despite some commentary regarding site maintenance, particularly un-mowed grass, the overall consensus points to a park with significant potential and a staff that aims to be accommodating. For many, the sheer size of the park, the large swimming pool, and the tranquil setting far outweigh any minor inconveniences, making it a beloved spot for those seeking a genuine escape from urban hustle.
Thousand Trails Medina Lake caters specifically to RVers, offering numerous sites designed for comfort and convenience. While the lake itself has experienced significant fluctuations in water level, reducing direct water access from the park, the campground remains a draw due to its other strong features. Its proximity to charming local businesses, like the "Out of the Way Cafe," adds to the overall experience, ensuring that guests have access to good food and local charm. For Texans looking for a peaceful base to explore the Hill Country, enjoy wildlife, and relax by the pool, this RV campground provides a compelling option.
Thousand Trails Medina Lake RV Campground is strategically located at 215 Spettle Rd, Lakehills, TX 78063, USA. This address places it within the heart of the Texas Hill Country, a highly sought-after region for outdoor recreation and scenic beauty. Lakehills is a community positioned on the north side of Medina Lake, approximately an hour's drive northwest of San Antonio. This provides excellent accessibility for Texans residing in the San Antonio metropolitan area, Austin, and other central Texas cities.
The drive to the campground typically involves navigating well-maintained state and county roads. From San Antonio, the journey usually takes travelers through scenic rural landscapes, leading directly to the park. While the immediate area around the campground offers a sense of being "out of the way," the main roads leading to Lakehills are generally easy to navigate for RVs of various sizes.
It's important for visitors to note that while the campground is named after Medina Lake, the lake's water levels can fluctuate significantly due to drought conditions in Texas. As of July 10, 2025, Medina Lake is approximately 5.1% full, meaning direct water access for activities like boating or swimming from the campground's immediate vicinity may be limited or non-existent. However, the campground itself provides plenty of on-site amenities and attractions, and its location still offers a beautiful Hill Country setting with abundant wildlife. This makes it a great base for exploring the wider region, even if direct lake activities are curtailed.

Thousand Trails Medina Lake (RV Campground) Reviews
I am sure when the lake was there, this was a beautiful RV park, but it has fallen on harder times. It is still a lovely get away, full of deer and other wild life.
Jun 24, 2025 · Tim TryonI am giving this park 5 stars because the vibe of the park is private, peaceful, and quiet. As another person commented in their review, Medina Lake definitely has that Wilderness vibe which I liked. I read the reviews that the lake was dried up but that's not why I came here. There are lots of beautiful deer to watch, the park is very large, so tons of walking available, the pool is huge, and staff is nice. Out of the Way Cafe down the road is a must. Their food is delicious! So here comes the "however." This park has so much potential but they do not maintain their sites, meaning, no one mows or trims the sites to prepare for the incoming RVer. Grass is literally thigh high and I am not exaggerating. I could post pictures but I'm not like that. I heard they have staff shortage and turnover but they do have a tractor with a mower on the back of it that can easily mow a site in less than 2 minutes. One day, I saw what I thought was going to be a lawn mowing day but turned out to be a guy cutting through the site literally leaving a mow mark and then left. He literally is driving the tractor and not manually pushing it. I was shocked. You have a machine to do the work for you! I understand you are short-staffed but it doesn't take a lot of coordination to maintain and mow sites as RVers come and go especially when you have only 40 sites occupied. First impressions are EVERYTHING!!! Painting the ranger station at the front gate was not a priority, maintaining and mowing your sites are. So to those RVers visiting Medina Lake, BYOM, bring your own mower, or BYOW, bring your own weed eater. You will need it. Happy RVing and safe travels!
Jun 02, 2025 · RV AdventurerThe RV park is nice and clean . Lots of run down areas and destroyed houses and trailers out side the park. Lake is empty due to no rain. More trash cans around would be nice. Pool not heated
