Then let's explore The Slab by the Barren Campground, a unique property nestled in Fountain Run, Kentucky. This destination has been a favorite for many seeking a vast, rustic environment with plenty of space for activities and a friendly atmosphere. We understand that for many of us in Kentucky, the appeal of a less commercialized, more authentic outdoor experience is paramount, and The Slab has certainly offered that.
Kentucky's landscape offers diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation, from its winding rivers to its vast hunting grounds. The Slab by the Barren Campground provides a particular kind of experience, catering to those who appreciate simplicity, ample space, and direct access to natural features like the river. It's a place designed to help you disconnect from digital noise and reconnect with the outdoors. However, it's very important to note a significant update: The Slab by the Barren Campground has announced its closure on July 13th, 2025. The owners have expressed their sadness and gratitude to all who have supported them over the past five years. While this article will still provide a factual overview of what the campground has offered, prospective visitors should be aware of this upcoming closure and contact the campground for any final, short-term availability.
The Slab by the Barren Campground is situated at 10820 Bugtussle Rd, Fountain Run, KY 42133, USA. This address places it in a more rural part of Monroe County, Kentucky, offering a truly removed and natural setting. Its proximity to the Barren River provides a key geographical feature, making it appealing for river-based activities such as primitive camping directly on the river, as noted by enthusiastic visitors.
For Kentuckians, reaching Fountain Run generally involves traveling on state routes that lead into more rural areas. While the exact condition of Bugtussle Road is not fully detailed in general public information, reviews suggest a "rough hewn" feel to the property, which might extend to the immediate access roads. Visitors have indicated that the "driveway pretty rough in winter and mud season" for another similar rustic campground in the region, implying that preparedness for less-maintained roads might be prudent when visiting such rural locations. This type of location ensures an escape from urban congestion, providing a sense of genuine wilderness. Its setting near the Barren River Lake area means that while the campground itself is rustic, it’s within a region known for broader outdoor recreation, offering further exploration opportunities for locals.
The Slab by the Barren Campground has offered a range of services geared towards a rustic and "unplugged" outdoor experience, appealing to those who prefer simplicity over extensive amenities.
- Primitive Camping: A significant offering is the opportunity for primitive camping, particularly "down on the river," providing a raw and immersive outdoor experience.
- Spacious Campsites: Reviewers consistently mention that campsites are "spacious" and the property is "large," allowing for plenty of room and privacy between campers.
- Club House with Activities: A unique amenity is the club house, which provides indoor activities like a "pool table," "corn hole," and "couple other activities to do," offering a social hub and a place to gather.
- Hunting Opportunities: The expansive property provides "plenty of space to hunt," catering to hunting enthusiasts, with specific mention of deer coming in daily and nearby public hunting land (Corp land).
- River Access and Activities: Direct access to the Barren River allows for activities such as "swimming and fishing in the creek," kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and dirt biking along river routes. Some sites are right by the river, offering "nice cold water."
- Shuttle and Rentals (for paddling): Reviews indicate that shuttle services and rentals (likely for paddling equipment) are available, enhancing river recreation.
However, it's important to note some past criticisms from reviews: "porta potties were nasty," "firewood was wet," and there were issues with "no map given and bad management" and unadvertised extra fees. While positive experiences highlight the core offerings, these past issues point to potential inconsistencies in facility maintenance and communication. Again, it is critical to remember the upcoming closure on July 13th, 2025.
The Slab by the Barren Campground has offered several key features and highlights that have made it a notable destination for a specific type of outdoor enthusiast.
- Expansive Property and Privacy: With a "large" property and "spacious" campsites, the campground provides ample room for guests, ensuring a sense of privacy. This "spread out" layout contributes to a more secluded and personal camping experience, described as a "Great place to get connected without being connected."
- Direct River Access and Activities: The "river was really nice," offering "nice cold water" for swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. This direct access to the Barren River is a major draw for water-based fun and relaxation. There are also "several sand nice bars for rest and picnicking."
- Unplugged Environment: For those seeking to truly disconnect, the campground offers a simple and rustic setting. One reviewer appreciated that it "met our needs, simple and unplugged." This makes it ideal for a digital detox.
- Hunting and ATV Opportunities: The "plenty of space to hunt" and mention of "ATVs that use the trails they have here" highlight its appeal for hunters and off-road vehicle enthusiasts, who are noted to be "super respectful."
- Friendly Atmosphere: Despite some managerial concerns, the general sentiment regarding interactions with staff and other campers is positive, with "staff was friendly" and neighbors described as "cool." One review mentions, "apparently ONLY nice people come here because our neighbors were all kind and helpful."
- Communal Club House: The presence of a club house with a pool table, corn hole, and other activities offers a unique social space, providing entertainment beyond the individual campsites.
- Beautiful Scenery: The natural beauty of the property, including "amazing views" and "lighting bugs after sunset was sooo beautiful," contributes to a memorable experience.
While some visitors noted issues with mud, unadvertised fees, and the condition of porta-potties and firewood, the overwhelming positive feedback centers on the spaciousness, the river, the friendly hosts, and the opportunity for an authentic, unplugged outdoor adventure. It is crucial to be aware of the campground's impending closure on July 13th, 2025, which will affect future availability.

Oct 06, 2023 · Dan CarmichaelNot my cup of tea. I’m sure there are some nice camping spots, but my entire spot was at an angle and full of mud. I had to pay extra to get into the campsite (not advertised), the firewood was wet, and the porta potties were nasty. No map given and bad management. No thank you
Jun 29, 2025 · Lindsay HeyvaertKent was super nice and took care of us well. Explained the trails in detail when we went riding!. He even brought us some quarters to play pool when the change machine broke!
May 18, 2025 · Nathan GrayTrail rode my horse 🐎 here today. The place is beautiful. The lady was very nice. Like any place your trail ride in Kentucky shoes on your horse is recommended!
May 04, 2023 · Shena GravesWhat sweet spot for a day trip or camping. We stayed at RV/Tent Site 16. This site has 3 levels. The lowest level sits on a gravel bar within the creek, very beautiful. We rented kayaks and tubes for our group of 10. There was live music, keroke, plenty of games and a food truck. We enjoyed it so much that we booked the same site again.
