The Point Boat Dock, Campground and Picnic Area Introduce
The Point Boat Dock, Campground and Picnic Area offers a truly unique camping and recreational experience that is distinct from anything else you'll find in the Arizona desert. As its name suggests, this spot is not just a simple campground but a multifaceted destination that caters to boaters, campers, and picnickers alike. Located near Fort McDowell, this location stands out because of its unique boat-in-only accessibility. This feature creates a sense of seclusion and adventure that can't be replicated at a drive-up site. It's a place that is "seriously stunning," with a landscape that offers a variety of "lagoons you can find yourself in," as one visitor noted. The charm of this place lies in its raw, natural beauty and the exclusive feel that comes with its unique access.
While the experience is centered on the natural environment, the site still provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. Visitors have praised the "vault toilets, picnic benches, and a fairly large dock," which provide the necessary comforts for a day trip or an overnight stay. However, potential visitors should be aware of the "wakes" from boats during weekends and the potential for loud music, as noted in a customer review. This suggests that the atmosphere can be more lively on weekends and quieter on weekdays, offering different experiences depending on when you choose to visit. Despite some of the challenges that come with a popular lake destination, the overall consensus is that the experience is "still very fun nonetheless." This blend of a rugged, natural setting with just enough amenities to be comfortable makes it a hidden gem for Arizona locals looking for a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure.
The Point Boat Dock, Campground and Picnic Area is located in Fort McDowell, AZ 85264, within the stunning Tonto National Forest. What sets this location apart is that it is primarily a "boat-in only" area. While there may be other access points, the main draw is the experience of reaching it by watercraft. This makes it an ideal destination for those who own a boat, kayak, or canoe, as well as for those who enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. The nearest land-based facilities are at Canyon Lake, about a 3-mile boat trip away. The access provides a scenic tour of the lake, offering "gorgeous" desert canyon views and fascinating geological formations. For those with RVs, the site offers electric hookups and on-site parking, which likely applies to the main recreation area near the boat ramp. The wheelchair-accessible parking lot at the main entrance further ensures that the area is welcoming to a wide range of visitors, highlighting the park's commitment to accessibility.

Unique Boat-In Access: The primary highlight is the exclusive nature of the site. The fact that it is accessible only by boat adds an element of adventure and seclusion that is rare to find. This makes the journey to the campground part of the experience, offering breathtaking scenery along the way.
Stunning Natural Scenery: The "seriously stunning" desert canyons, "fascinating geology," and "all sorts of lagoons" are major draws. The beautiful views and unique landscape make this location perfect for photography, relaxation, and exploring the natural beauty of Arizona.
Great for Water Activities: The location on Canyon Lake makes it a prime spot for water activities. Kayaking and swimming are popular, with visitors recommending finding a quiet lagoon to anchor and swim in to avoid boat wakes.
Essential Amenities Provided: Despite its remote feel, the campground provides crucial amenities. The presence of vault toilets, picnic tables, and a dock ensures a comfortable and convenient experience for campers and picnickers.
Flexible for Day Use and Overnight Stays: The site's dual purpose as a boat dock, campground, and picnic area allows for a flexible visit. You can spend a fun-filled day on the lake with your family or set up camp for a quiet overnight stay under the stars.
Family-Friendly, with Considerations: While the area is "good for kids," it is important for families to be aware of the high boat traffic and potential for loud music on weekends. Visiting on a weekday might offer a quieter, more family-friendly experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Cool experience kayaking to this very unique only boat-accessible area. Vault toilets, picnic benches, and a fairly large dock are the only amenities for here. Flying insects (gnats) can be pretty bad here most of the year compared to other rec areas on the lake. Still very fun nonetheless!
February 21 · Austin HinzThis place is seriously stunning. I have to say, there are all sorts of lagoons you can find yourself in. I do have one complaint, on the weekend there are so many boaters AND the waterways can be quite narrow in some places making the wakes a bit of an issue if you want to swim. I recommend finding a lagoon to anchor in and swim there. Lots of people with really loud music/boats playing explicit stuff. Not the most conducive for families, might be different on a week day.
