The Cove Campground

980 Cove Rd, Gore, VA 22637, USA

4.0
The camping area is quite nice with some great-looking lakes. We had a good time and the electricity is reliable. We questioned why the water was not on for a mid-march outing, but other than that, the camping was good. I do think that the prices are a bit steep, but I understand that it probably costs money to maintain the area and keep staff. With that said, we will definitely be back again. - Rob Sherwin

The Cove Campground Introduce

For Virginians seeking an outdoor adventure that veers off the beaten path, The Cove Campground in Gore, VA, presents a unique and expansive opportunity. Unlike typical, highly manicured campgrounds, The Cove embraces a more rugged, "roughing it" philosophy, catering to those who appreciate a blend of outdoor activities, from fishing and swimming to ATV riding and target practice. Spanning 3,000 mountain acres with three large spring-fed lakes, this privately owned and operated facility offers a diverse landscape for exploration and recreation. It's a place where the sounds of nature often override the hum of everyday life, inviting locals to disconnect and immerse themselves in a truly varied outdoor experience in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.

The Cove Campground is located at 980 Cove Rd, Gore, VA 22637, USA. This address places it approximately 12 miles west of Winchester, Virginia, and about 80 minutes from Washington, D.C. Its location in Gore, a small community in Frederick County, Virginia, positions it within easy reach of the northern Shenandoah Valley.

Accessibility to The Cove is straightforward for Virginians. From Winchester, you take U.S. Route 50 West, then turn left onto Route 751. A subsequent left onto Route 704 leads you for about 4.5 miles, followed by a left on Route 683 for 1.5 miles to reach The Cove headquarters. While the drive takes you into a more secluded, mountainous area, the primary roads are generally well-maintained. Visitors should be aware that once inside the property, some internal roads, particularly those leading to more remote campsites or ATV trails, may be unpaved or more rugged, favoring vehicles with higher clearance. Despite its rustic nature, its relatively close proximity to Winchester provides convenient access to supplies and services if needed, making it an accessible wilderness escape for many in the region.

The Cove Campground offers a range of services designed to support a rustic yet adventurous outdoor experience. It's important to note that while some sites offer electricity, many amenities are more basic, aligning with a "roughing it" style of camping.

  • Campsites: The Cove offers 100 spacious campsites, each with a picnic table and a fire circle. Some sites are available with electricity hook-ups (30-amp and 50-amp). Water hook-ups are available at some sites, though reviews suggest water availability can be seasonal.
  • Cabin & Shelter Rentals: In addition to campsites, The Cove offers two cabins and two shelters for rent, providing alternative lodging options for those who prefer more shelter.
  • Firewood for Sale: Firewood is available for purchase at the office, or can be delivered during office hours, ensuring campers have fuel for their campfires.
  • Shower House: A shower house is available, though it may be a distance from some campsites, and reviewers have noted a lack of mirrors or sinks in the outhouses.
  • Outhouses/Vault Toilets: Basic outhouses (pit toilets) are provided throughout the camping areas, and generally include toilet paper.
  • Canoe/Kayak Rental: It appears that canoes or kayaks may be available for rent for use on the river, or possibly the lakes, though specifics should be confirmed.
  • Shooting Ranges: The Cove provides two shooting ranges (pistol and rifle/shotgun) that can be scheduled for use at the office. There is a range fee, which is $25 per person for general admission, and an additional $15 for campers per day of use. A long range (500 yards) is also available by reservation with a three-person minimum.
  • Trash Collection: Trash is collected from sites daily around 10 AM, or campers can flag down an employee. There is also a dumpster near the office.
  • Ice Sales: Ice can be purchased at the office.

The Cove Campground distinguishes itself with a unique set of features and highlights that appeal to a specific type of outdoor enthusiast.

  • Three Large Spring-Fed Lakes: A major draw, these lakes provide excellent opportunities for fishing (with a catch-and-release policy for large bass and no live bait on one lake). Reviewers frequently praise the "great-looking lakes." The main lake, Cove Lake, also features a man-made beach and swimming area.
  • Extensive ATV & Motorcycle Trails: The property boasts over 30 miles of marked trails specifically for ATVs and motorcycles, making it a prime destination for off-roading enthusiasts. While the property does not rent ATVs, visitors can bring their own. These trails are mostly geared towards experienced riders but include a beginner loop.
  • Shooting Ranges: The presence of two dedicated shooting ranges (a pistol range and a rifle/shotgun range, and a 500-yard long range) is a significant highlight, offering a rare opportunity for campers to combine their outdoor stay with target practice.
  • "Roughing It" Atmosphere: The campground embraces a more primitive style of camping, appealing to those who prefer less commercialization and a more direct connection with nature. This includes limited amenities at some sites, promoting self-reliance.
  • Pet-Friendly: Dogs are welcome at The Cove, as long as they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them. There are even mentions of "free roaming goats and a friendly dog who checked in sometimes," adding to the rustic charm.
  • Peaceful & Secluded Environment: Despite the ATV trails and shooting ranges, many reviewers still highlight the overall peace and quiet, particularly at night, and the feeling of being truly disconnected from city life. There is generally no Wi-Fi or reliable cell signal, which some find "great" for a true unplugged experience.
  • Abundant Firewood: Firewood is readily available for purchase, ensuring enjoyable campfires at the provided fire pits (though grills are not typically included at individual sites).
  • Volleyball Beach Net: A volleyball net at the beach offers a recreational activity near the swimming area.

While The Cove Campground is not typically known for traditional "promotions" in the commercial sense, there are specific rate structures and offerings that locals should be aware of:

  • Daily Rates: Pricing for campsites is structured on a daily basis. Reviewers have noted that prices can be "a bit steep," suggesting that visitors should factor the cost into their budget. It's always best to check their official website or call directly for the most current rates, as these can fluctuate.
  • Range Fees: As mentioned, there is a distinct fee for using the shooting ranges, separate from camping fees (e.g., $25 per person general admission, plus $15 for campers per day of use for the standard range; $50 per person for a two-hour session at the long range).
  • Seasonal Operations: While The Cove is open year-round for camping, ATV riding, range use, hiking, and fishing, some amenities like water hookups may be seasonal (as noted by a reviewer in mid-March). It's crucial to confirm the availability of all desired services for your planned visit.
  • No Refunds for Inclement Weather: The campground states that refunds will not be given due to inclement weather, so campers should plan accordingly.

For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, it is highly recommended to contact The Cove Campground directly or visit their official website before planning your trip.
