The Boulders Introduce
For Arizona locals seeking a unique outdoor experience that goes beyond the typical developed campground, The Boulders near Florence offers an intriguing option. This isn't your average state park or recreational area with paved roads and designated amenities. Instead, it’s a rugged and beautiful scenic spot that also serves as a primitive camping area, perfect for those who are prepared for a true off-the-grid adventure. Situated along the Florence-Kelvin Highway, this location is a striking landscape of immense, mesmerizing rock formations that create a perfect backdrop for photography, off-roading, and a peaceful escape.
The Boulders provides a different kind of camping experience, one that is rooted in self-sufficiency and respect for the natural environment. While it offers incredible views and a sense of remote tranquility, it requires visitors to be mindful of their surroundings and to "pack in, pack out" everything they bring. This is a place for the prepared camper, the off-road enthusiast, and the nature lover who cherishes the raw, untouched beauty of the Arizona desert. The dramatic contrast between the desert floor and these colossal granite formations is what makes this area a popular subject for photographers and a destination for those looking for a scenic drive or a challenging hike.
While this location is a treasure for many, it's important to be aware of the challenges it presents, as some visitors have noted. The lack of formal management means there are no designated staff or facilities. This requires campers to be respectful of the land, leaving it as beautiful as they found it. We believe in providing a clear, honest picture of what to expect so that you can have a safe and enjoyable trip. The sheer beauty and unique geology of The Boulders make it a destination well worth the effort for those seeking a less-structured outdoor adventure in the heart of Arizona.
Location and Accessibility
The Boulders is located on the Florence-Kelvin Highway near Florence, AZ 85132, USA. It is easily accessible for those coming from the Phoenix metropolitan area or other parts of central Arizona. The drive to the area, though on a dirt road, is generally manageable, but as some visitors have noted, it can be a bit rough in places. The entrance to the public area is a dirt road to the left of a locked gate that marks private property, so it’s essential to pay attention to your surroundings to ensure you are in the correct spot.
For those with off-road capable vehicles, the area provides a playground for adventure. The dirt roads and open terrain are great for off-roading enthusiasts. For those with standard vehicles, you can park and explore on foot. Due to the unpaved nature of the roads, it's always a good idea to check local weather conditions before your trip, as rain can make the roads difficult to navigate. Since the closest services are in Florence, it's crucial to bring everything you need with you, including water, food, and fuel. This self-reliance is a key part of the experience.

Visitors must be prepared to be completely self-sufficient. This includes bringing your own water for drinking and hygiene, and having a plan for waste management. The lack of services is what keeps the area wild and free, but it also places the responsibility of conservation directly on the visitor.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beautiful on a Winter, early Spring day. Lots of photography opportunities. There is a locked gate, that is private property. There is a dirt road left of the gate that's where you enter. Great for off road fun, but can park and hike or explore the boulders too. Kid and dog friendly if watched closely. Bring what you need closest services are in Florence. The only dislike for this is that it seems to be a party spot, lots of cans and broken glass left behind.
