The ability to have a place entirely to yourself, surrounded by the natural beauty of Western Iowa, is a rare find. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of what you can expect, helping you decide if this secluded tent-only spot is your next ideal Iowa camping destination.
The Tent-Only Campground is situated at 1450 Nelson Park Rd, Dow City, IA 51528, USA. This address places it within the larger Nelson Park, a significant natural area in Crawford County, Iowa. While it shares the general vicinity of Dow City, the "tent-only" designation often implies a more tucked-away location within the park, providing that sought-after seclusion. As noted by some visitors, access to this particular area can sometimes be an adventure in itself. There have been instances where the primary access road has been washed out, requiring campers to walk a bit to reach the sites. This, while potentially inconvenient for some, directly contributes to the campground's unique selling point: its peaceful isolation. When the road is closed, it often means even fewer visitors, enhancing the sense of having the place to yourself.
Nelson Park, in general, is a 165-acre park providing various outdoor activities. For the specific tent-only area, accessibility typically involves navigating internal park roads. It's advisable for potential campers to check current conditions, especially after heavy rainfall, to understand the best way to reach the campground. Despite potential access challenges, the overall location within Nelson Park means you’re not entirely isolated from the broader park’s offerings or Dow City itself, which is a short drive away for any necessary supplies or services. This balance of secluded camping within a larger park framework makes it an intriguing option for those who want to feel off-grid but still have the reassurance of nearby amenities.
The services offered at a primitive, tent-only campground like this are typically more basic, focusing on essential needs rather than extensive amenities. Based on visitor feedback, here's what you can generally expect:
- Water Access: A hydrant is available for water, which is a crucial amenity for tent campers.
- Secluded Sites: The primary service is providing a quiet, private space away from the noise of more developed campgrounds.
- Fire Pits: While not explicitly mentioned for the tent-only area, fire pits are standard at most campsites and are likely available for campfires.
- Basic Restrooms: While one review noted dirty bathrooms, indicating potential maintenance issues, the presence of washrooms, even if basic, is generally a service provided. It's important to set expectations for rustic facilities rather than modern ones.
- Camping Fee (Variable): While some visitors have reported free stays when the road is closed, the standard fee for non-electric sites at Nelson Park is generally around $12 per night. It's always best to be prepared for the fee and consider any free stay a bonus.
The Tent-Only Campground at Nelson Park, despite its rustic nature, boasts several features and highlights that make it appealing to a specific type of camper:
- Unparalleled Seclusion: This is its most significant highlight. Being "secluded from the noise of the other campgrounds" means a truly peaceful experience, often with the place entirely to oneself. This is invaluable for those seeking quiet reflection or undisturbed stargazing.
- Beautiful Area: Visitors consistently describe the area as beautiful, indicating scenic surroundings conducive to enjoying nature. This includes the natural landscape of Nelson Park, with its open spaces and scattered trees.
- Genuine Primitive Camping Experience: For those who prefer a less developed, more "back-to-nature" approach, this campground delivers. It's ideal for experienced tent campers comfortable with basic facilities.
- Potential for Free Stays: As mentioned by a past visitor, if the access road is washed out and necessitates walking in, the ranger may allow free stays. While not guaranteed, it's a unique characteristic that adds to its appeal for adventurous and flexible campers.
- Water Hydrant: The availability of a water hydrant is a practical and welcome feature, providing a reliable source of potable water for cooking, drinking, and cleaning.
- Access to Nelson Park Amenities: While the tent sites themselves are primitive, being within Nelson Park means campers can potentially access the park's broader offerings. Nelson Park features an 11-acre lake suitable for kayaking and fishing, an accessible pier, picnic areas, a beach, and a playground. There are also hiking opportunities within the 165-acre park.
- Escape from Crowds: Unlike popular, often crowded campgrounds, this tent-only area offers an escape from the hustle and bustle, providing a true wilderness feel even within a park setting.

The road is washed out so you have to walk up there, but we had the place to ourselves. Beautiful area and secluded from the noise of the other campgrounds. There's a hydrant for water. Since the road is closed the ranger let us stay free.
