Taylors Island Family Campgrounds Introduce
For Maryland residents seeking a unique and long-term connection to the Chesapeake Bay area, Taylors Island Family Campgrounds offers a distinct approach to outdoor living. Located on the serene Taylors Island, this campground primarily caters to those interested in seasonal or extended stays, fostering a close-knit community among its long-term residents. While it may not be the bustling family vacation spot with extensive children's amenities that some might envision, it presents a tranquil alternative for those who appreciate a quieter, more permanent presence by the water.
It's important for locals to understand that Taylors Island Family Campgrounds has evolved from its "peaceful, desolate" past, as reminisced by those who remember the area from decades ago. Today, it features a developed infrastructure with a focus on accommodating trailers, particularly for long-term leases. This makes it an ideal spot for Marylanders looking for a consistent retreat, perhaps for fishing, crabbing, or simply enjoying the peaceful bay views. While some public feedback indicates areas for improvement regarding facilities and recreational offerings for children, the campground does provide essential services and a tranquil setting that appeals to a specific type of camper.
Location and Accessibility
Taylors Island Family Campgrounds is located at 4362 Bay Shore Rd, Taylors Island, MD 21669, USA. This address places it directly on Taylors Island, a picturesque and somewhat remote peninsula in Dorchester County, Maryland. The island itself is known for its rural charm, vast marshlands, and prime access to the Chesapeake Bay. Being situated directly on Bay Shore Road means convenient access to the waterfront, offering picturesque views and easy reach to the water for various activities.
For Maryland residents, reaching Taylors Island typically involves a drive through scenic Eastern Shore landscapes. While it is "far off the beaten path" compared to more urbanized areas, this contributes to its quiet and less commercialized atmosphere, which is a draw for many campers seeking a genuine escape. The remoteness means it's not immediately surrounded by numerous large-scale attractions, but its primary appeal is its direct connection to the bay. For those with boats, the presence of a boat launch and slips is a significant accessibility feature, allowing direct access to the rich fishing and crabbing grounds of the Chesapeake Bay. While the journey to Taylors Island might take a bit longer, the destination offers a unique blend of solitude and waterfront access that is characteristic of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Services Offered
- RV Sites with Hookups: The campground primarily accommodates RVs, offering sites with hookups that may include electric (30 Amp), water, and partial hookups. This setup is conducive to both short-term and, more significantly, long-term or seasonal stays.
- Long-Term Lease Sites: A notable service is the provision of long-term lease sites, allowing campers to establish a more permanent base for their recreational vehicle. These sites often permit additions like porches, fostering a sense of community among seasonal residents.
- Transient Sites: While the focus is on long-term leases, there are a few sites available for shorter stays, often described as "bayfront" (though without a swimming beach).
- Boat Launch and Slips: For avid boaters and anglers, the campground provides a convenient boat launch and slips, granting direct access to the water for fishing, crabbing, and exploring the bay.
- General Store: There is a general store on-site, offering basic stock and supplies, including bait and "happy hour supplies," catering to the needs of campers.
- Laundry Facilities: Laundry services are available, providing a practical amenity for campers, especially those on extended stays.
- Restrooms: Restroom facilities are present, though some public feedback indicates they "need work" and can be "hit or miss for clean."
- Game Room: While listed as an amenity, at least one recent review noted "there's no game room for the kids" or that it might be small. This suggests that while a space may be designated, its functionality or appeal for younger children might be limited.
- Pet-Friendly: Pets are welcome at the campground, making it a viable option for those who travel with their furry companions, although it's noted there are "rabbits EVERYWHERE!" which might be a consideration for pet owners.
Features / Highlights
- Predominantly Long-Term & Seasonal Community: A defining feature of Taylors Island Family Campgrounds is its emphasis on long-term lease sites. This creates a stable, community-oriented atmosphere where many campers are seasonal residents, often forming close bonds. This aspect is ideal for Marylanders seeking a consistent and familiar getaway.
- Bay View: Many sites, particularly the transient ones, offer good bay views, providing a picturesque backdrop for a relaxing stay by the water. While there isn't a wide, sandy swimming beach directly at the campground, the views and access to the water for fishing are significant draws.
- Excellent for Fishing and Crabbing: The campground's location and amenities, particularly the boat launch and fishing focus, make it highly attractive for fishing and crabbing enthusiasts. This is a primary activity for many visitors.
- Quiet and Peaceful (for adults): Despite being developed, the atmosphere is generally described as quiet, particularly if you are seeking a peaceful retreat away from typical kid-centric activities. One reviewer noted it was "nice quiet place."
- Homey Feeling: Some visitors describe the place as having a "homey feeling" with "very nice people," suggesting a welcoming atmosphere among the established community.
- Value for Specific Needs: For those whose primary purpose is fishing, boating, or simply having an affordable, consistent base near the bay, the campground can offer good value, as noted by a reviewer who found it a much more economical alternative to local hotels.
Promotions or Special Offers
Based on the publicly available information, there are no specific, widely advertised promotions or special offers for Taylors Island Family Campgrounds. The campground's primary business model appears to be focused on long-term or seasonal leases, with limited transient sites. Such establishments typically do not run frequent public promotions in the way a larger, more amenity-rich tourist campground might. Their value proposition often lies in the consistent availability of a bayfront spot for an extended period.
However, for those interested in long-term stays, inquiring directly about seasonal rates or lease agreements would be the most relevant "offer." For short-term stays, it's advisable to contact them directly by phone to ask about nightly rates and any potential availability, as these sites are limited. Any specific discounts or packages would likely be communicated directly to prospective campers upon inquiry or through their internal communications for seasonal residents. For Maryland residents, Taylors Island Family Campgrounds offers a niche but appealing option, particularly for those seeking a long-term or consistent presence by the Chesapeake Bay. While some public feedback highlights a lack of amenities for young children and inconsistencies in restroom cleanliness, the campground's suitability for locals lies in its specialized offerings and unique atmosphere.
The primary strength of this campground for Marylanders is its focus on long-term and seasonal leases. This is ideal for individuals or families who wish to have a permanent, or semi-permanent, base for their RV near the bay without the logistical hassle of repeated setups and takedowns. Taylors Island Family Campgrounds Reviews
Not at all what I remembered from my childhood, in the 60's it was peaceful, desolate. No trailers, no people, just a wide beach with lots of driftwood. Untouched by mankind. No lodging!
Jun 03, 2025 · CharlesOlder grounds for long term lease. Only a few sites to stay in. No kids play areas or swimming. Bathrooms need work... hit or miss for clean. Store ok for stock. Owner more worried about his wine sales. Look elsewhere for more fun. Good bay view.
May 24, 2024 · Kristina StotelmyerGrew up going here every summer as a kid. Loveee Taylor's island and this campground.
Apr 17, 2025 · Victoria TuckerI had a great time fishing, the area outside to picnic with the kids is beautiful overlooking the bay. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. It is great to be able to take our dog with us. Everyone is friendly. The laundry area is a bonus and the stoe carries so many items. I love going there.
Dec 26, 2022 · Candy AltlandDisfunctional and unorganized business. Would not recommend. I booked a campsite 5 months in advance for a trip. I called closer to the date, just to confirm since they are low tech and don't offer online reservations or email confirmation. I called only to be told that they did not have me down and lost or didn't put me in their books.
