Tanners Flat Campground

Campground, Park ★4.0

7490 Little Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Sandy, UT 84092, USA

4.0
We loved this campground for our family campout last year, so much so that we booked it again this year! It's so nice to have access to affordable camping grounds on public lands. Tanners Flat has a bunch of trees that provide nice shade and views. We saw wildlife while we were there, including a doe that frequented the campground! It's also close to some good hikes, like Gloria Falls. It is much cooler up there than it is in the city, so it was the perfect place to camp in the middle of the summer. It's also the perfect location because it's pretty close to the cities nearby in case you forgot to buy something, but still tucked in the canyon so much that you can't see or hear the cities at all.If you have little kids, I would recommend getting a campsite that's not right by the river. One site is gorgeous and basically has its own personal waterfall (site 33 I think), but it is so close to the river that it would be dangerous for little kids because it would only take a few seconds if looking away for them to get to the river. If you can go ahead of time to check out the campsites, that may be best since the map doesn't accurately show the distance in relation to the river. We were at site 34 with our little kids, and it felt far enough away to be safe. - Audrie King

Tanners Flat Campground Introduce

Hello, fellow Utahns! When the summer heat sets in, there's nothing better than escaping to the cool canyons for a refreshing outdoor adventure. If you're looking for the perfect spot that combines the tranquility of nature with the convenience of being close to the city, you need to know about Tanners Flat Campground. Located in the picturesque Little Cottonwood Canyon, this campground is a favorite among locals for a reason. It offers a beautiful, shaded environment, access to excellent hiking, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you feel a world away from the valley floor. In this article, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive and factual overview of Tanners Flat Campground, from its unique location and amenities to the key highlights that make it a truly special place for a family campout or a weekend getaway.

Tanners Flat Campground is ideally situated at 7490 Little Cottonwood Canyon Rd, Sandy, UT 84092, USA. This address places it just a few miles from the urban sprawl of Sandy, but the moment you drive up the canyon, you are immersed in a completely different world. The location is perfect for those who want to be close to essential supplies without sacrificing the feeling of being in the wilderness. It's a key benefit that you can run down to a nearby city for forgotten items in a matter of minutes. The campground is nestled at a higher elevation, which provides a much cooler climate during the summer months, making it a perfect refuge from the city heat. Furthermore, the campground is committed to accessibility, featuring a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot. This ensures that a wider range of visitors can enjoy the beauty of the canyon. The campground is a mix of both park and camping facilities, offering a versatile space for various outdoor activities.

Tanners Flat Campground provides a thoughtful selection of services and amenities that cater to both tent and RV campers, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay for everyone.

  • Essential Amenities: The campground provides running water, public restrooms, and picnic tables at the tent sites. The availability of running water is a significant convenience for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. The restrooms are generally well-maintained, contributing to a more comfortable stay. A review from June 2025 noted a temporary water outage due to avalanche damage, so it is always wise to check the current status before visiting, but the presence of well-maintained portable restrooms ("honeybuckets") and a friendly host who communicates this information shows the dedication of the staff.

  • RV and Tent Camping: Tanners Flat offers both RV and tent sites, providing flexibility for different types of campers. The sites have picnic tables and fire rings, with group sites also having grills and serving tables. This range of offerings makes it easy to find a spot that fits your needs, whether you're in a small tent or a larger RV. However, it's worth noting that some sites may be tight for larger RVs, so it is recommended to check site lengths carefully before booking.

  • Family-Friendly Features: The campground is noted as being "Good for kids." It has a variety of kid-friendly activities, and the natural environment provides a great playground for young ones. There are numerous hiking trails nearby that are suitable for families. The serene and safe atmosphere makes it a great choice for parents who want their children to enjoy the outdoors. There is also a volleyball court available for use, though campers must bring their own net and ball.

  • Payments: The campground operates on a camping fee basis. The fee helps with the upkeep and maintenance of the facilities, ensuring that the campground remains clean and accessible for all visitors. This system supports the preservation of this beautiful public land.

The true highlights of Tanners Flat Campground are the unique features that make it a special and memorable place for a camping trip.

  • Spectacular Scenery and Shade: One of the major highlights is the beautiful natural environment. The campground is situated among shady pine, aspen, oak, and maple trees, which provide excellent shade and stunning views. As one reviewer mentioned, the trees offer a "nice shade and views," and this is especially appreciated during the hot summer months in Utah. You can enjoy the beauty of wildflowers in the summer and the vibrant colors of autumn in the fall.

  • Wildlife Encounters: Visitors often see local wildlife, adding to the charm of the experience. A reviewer shared a wonderful story of seeing a doe that "frequented the campground," which highlights the serene and wild nature of the area. This provides a great opportunity for nature photography and education for children.

  • Proximity to Hiking and Water: The campground is an excellent base for exploring the canyon. It is "close to some good hikes, like Gloria Falls." Little Cottonwood Creek runs along the edge of the campground, offering a soothing sound and a beautiful sight. However, as one parent wisely noted, some sites are very close to the river and may not be safe for very young children. It's a good tip to check a map or visit ahead of time to find a site that is a safe distance away from the water.

  • Exceptional Staff: The camp hosts are frequently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. A reviewer from Father's Day 2025 mentioned a host who was "very friendly" and even recommended a path with "wonderful views of the river." This level of personal service makes a big difference and contributes to a positive camping experience.
