Tajique Campground Introduce
Hello, fellow New Mexicans! Are you craving a serene escape into the heart of our state's stunning natural landscapes, where the only sounds you hear are the rustling leaves and the gentle flow of a seasonal creek? Look no further than Tajique Campground, a beloved, often-quiet gem nestled in the Manzano Mountains within the Cibola National Forest, near Estancia, New Mexico. This campground offers a truly authentic outdoor experience, and what's more, it's free, making it an incredibly accessible and appealing option for locals seeking a tranquil retreat.
Tajique Campground is a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the joy of unadulterated nature. It's a place where you can unwind, disconnect from the demands of daily life, and immerse yourself in the peaceful embrace of the forest. Despite its primitive nature, visitors consistently praise its cleanliness and the thoughtful provision of essential amenities, ensuring a comfortable and respectful camping experience.
What truly sets Tajique Campground apart is its unique combination of accessibility, natural beauty, and its fee-free policy. This makes it an ideal destination for those who appreciate a more rugged, less crowded camping environment and value the opportunity to explore New Mexico's wilderness without the overhead of paid campsites. It's a cherished spot for quiet contemplation, wildlife viewing, and simply enjoying the tranquility that only our beautiful state can offer.
Tajique Campground is located at Estancia, NM 87016, USA, specifically within the Mountainair Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest. This places it on the scenic East slopes of the Manzano Mountain range, offering a high elevation of approximately 6,800 feet that provides cooler temperatures and distinct vegetation compared to the lower desert regions of New Mexico.
Accessing Tajique Campground is relatively easy, typically involving a drive on US-60 to State Highway 55, then taking Forest Road 55 (which may also be County Road A013 on some maps) west for about 7.1 miles. While some sections may be gravel, the road is generally manageable for cars, trucks, vans, and even small RVs and teardrop trailers. Larger RVs (over 22 feet) might find the campground challenging to navigate or park within the designated sites, though some larger pull-outs are noted further down the road. It's always wise to check current road conditions, especially after rain, as some areas might become less suitable for 2WD vehicles.
The remote yet accessible location allows campers to feel truly immersed in nature, while still being within a reasonable drive of communities like Mountainair and Estancia for any necessary supplies. This balance makes Tajique Campground an excellent choice for New Mexicans seeking a true wilderness experience without venturing too far off the beaten path.

Tajique Campground Reviews
Enjoyed staying here in mid-Oct. Quiet, easy to access, pretty spot near a cliffside. There are two picnic tables with firepits, a couple of large turnouts down the road. Trash recepticles and pit toilets were in good shape. Thank you for leaving it clean!
Oct 27, 2024 · CassidyBeautiful place, not a ton of people around and the bathroom was well maintained. There is a bear proof toilet and plenty of nature.
Mar 15, 2024 · Fritz PerazaCross the small creek down from the wooden sign of Smokey the Bear and you will find the perfect campsite. At night you can hear the small waterfall just upstream.
May 05, 2018 · a carriereNice site. Not very many good places for pitching a tent, except for a really nice area on the other side of the stream that has a picnic table. We made due at the site near the road. Also, the bathroom was fairly clean. Pretty spot, and the stream has a very nice small waterfall. Very relaxing, and uncommon in central New Mexico. Overall an enjoyable place.
Feb 25, 2023 · Daniel GrossThis was a very secluded camp ground. We were the only ones there. Almost seems as though it's abandoned but little clues shows that it's not. There is a vault bathroom with new tp rolls and the garbage had new liners in them. There are several campsites to choose from. Some near the road and others you have to take a small hike to for even more secludedness. It is a beautiful area, we saw many dear. At some point there is a running creek but it was very dry when we were there. You take a dirt road to get there but whatever you do, DO NOT take the tribal roads if that's where GPS tells you to go, it's a dead end.
