The sites here were well-kept and beautiful with lake views. The vault toilets were also decent. Definitely bring bug spray because the mosquitoes were bad. Also, the traffic noise was pretty loud all night. We were in site 7, which was not close to the road but it was still pretty loud. Still though, great last minute camping spot for $25. - Heather R

Sunset Cove Campground is beautifully situated on the eastern shore of Crescent Lake in Central Oregon, bearing the address H26P+XG, Crescent Lake, OR 97733, USA. This location places it within the Deschutes National Forest, renowned for its diverse landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities. For locals, accessing Sunset Cove is generally straightforward. From Bend, you would typically head south on US-97. After passing through Lapine, you'll take the exit for Crescent Lake Junction, which leads you onto Oregon Route 58. Follow Highway 58 east, and signs for Crescent Lake and various campgrounds will guide you. The turn-off for Sunset Cove is well-marked and leads directly to the campground area. While the campground offers a sense of being 'away from it all,' its proximity to Highway 58 means there can be some traffic noise, as noted by past visitors. However, this also contributes to its accessibility, making it a viable option for a last-minute camping trip without venturing too far off the beaten path. The drive itself is scenic, winding through forests and offering glimpses of the region's volcanic past. It’s always advisable to check current road conditions, especially during shoulder seasons, but generally, the route to Sunset Cove is well-maintained and easily navigable for most vehicles. This blend of remote feel with reasonable accessibility makes it a convenient and attractive choice for Oregon residents.

Sunset Cove Campground provides essential services designed to offer a comfortable, yet rustic, camping experience on the shores of Crescent Lake.

  • Campsites: The campground offers a variety of well-kept and often spacious sites. While specific amenities for each site like picnic tables and fire pits are standard for most Oregon campgrounds, visitor reviews specifically highlight the generous size of the sites, which is a significant advantage for those seeking more personal space or for groups.

  • Lake Views: Many sites boast beautiful views of Crescent Lake, allowing campers to wake up to picturesque sunrises over the water and enjoy the calming presence of the lake throughout their stay. This feature is a major draw for those who prioritize scenic beauty.

  • Vault Toilets: Vault toilets are available throughout the campground. Customer reviews indicate these facilities are generally "decent" and "pretty clean and not stinky," which is a positive indicator for this type of restroom. While not flush toilets, their upkeep is appreciated by campers.

  • Water Access: While specific details on potable water availability are not provided, it is common for national forest campgrounds of this nature to either have no potable water or limited hand pumps. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water supply or have a reliable method for treating water from the lake.

  • Reservations / First-Come, First-Served: Sunset Cove appears to accommodate both planned and spontaneous trips. Reviews mention it being a "great last minute camping spot," suggesting that a portion of sites might be available on a first-come, first-served basis, or that cancellations might open up availability. However, for guaranteed spots, especially during peak season, checking for reservation options through the national forest service or Recreation.gov is always recommended.

  • Fees: A noted fee of $25 per night makes it an affordable option for many campers, providing good value for a lakeside experience.

  • No Running Water / Showers: As is typical for campgrounds with vault toilets, running water hookups at sites and shower facilities are not available. Campers should plan for basic hygiene needs accordingly.

Sunset Cove Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a standout choice for an outdoor getaway in Oregon.

  • Incredible Lake Views: The most frequently praised feature is undoubtedly the "beautiful views" and "lake views" that many campsites offer. Waking up to the serene expanse of Crescent Lake and enjoying sunsets over the water are truly special experiences that draw visitors to this location. The sound of the water, as one reviewer noted, is also "so nice," adding to the tranquil ambiance.

  • Spacious Campsites: Guests consistently mention the large size of the campsites, even when booked last minute. This allows for ample space to set up tents, enjoy outdoor activities, and maintain a sense of privacy, which is highly valued by campers.

  • Clean Vault Toilets: While vault toilets are a basic amenity, the fact that they are described as "decent," "pretty clean," and "not stinky" by multiple reviewers speaks volumes about the care taken in maintaining the facilities. This significantly contributes to a more comfortable camping experience.

  • Fantastic Stargazing: The clear, dark skies of Central Oregon provide an unparalleled backdrop for celestial observation. Visitors have raved about the "incredible stars at night," making Sunset Cove an ideal spot for amateur astronomers or anyone who appreciates the beauty of a vast night sky unmarred by light pollution.

  • Lakeside Activities: Being on Crescent Lake naturally opens up opportunities for various water-based activities such as kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fishing. While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, direct lake access is a given highlight for any lakefront campground.

  • Natural Setting: Despite some road noise, the overall setting is one of natural beauty, offering a chance to disconnect and immerse oneself in the forest and lake environment. The sounds of nature, coupled with the visual appeal, create a truly relaxing atmosphere.
