Imagine waking up to the sounds of the forest, with the fresh mountain air invigorating your senses. While it’s a smaller, more primitive campground, its charm lies in its simplicity and the undisturbed natural environment it provides. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat, away from the crowds often found at larger, more developed campgrounds.
Summit Lake Campground is located within the expansive Boise National Forest, specifically at Forest Rd 579IA, Cascade, ID 83611, USA. Its elevated position, at over 7,000 feet, contributes to its serene and often cooler atmosphere, making it a refreshing escape during Idaho's warmer months.
Accessing the campground is relatively straightforward, yet it retains a sense of secluded discovery. The main road leading to the area is paved, ensuring a smooth drive for the majority of your journey. As you near the campground, you'll transition onto a short gravel road, estimated to be around 300 feet long, which leads directly into the camping area. This brief stretch of gravel ensures that while it feels wonderfully remote, it remains quite accessible even for standard vehicles. The proximity to Cascade, Idaho, means that essential supplies or services are not too far away, offering a convenient balance between wilderness immersion and practical accessibility for local Idahoans.
Summit Lake Campground provides basic, yet essential, services designed for a rustic camping experience:
- Campsites: This is a small, intimate campground, featuring approximately five campsites. Each site is relatively level, providing a suitable spot for tents and smaller trailers. It's important to note that larger trailers may not fit comfortably, but trailers up to around 20 feet could likely be accommodated in at least two of the sites.
- Fire Pits: Every campsite is equipped with a metal fire pit, perfect for safe and enjoyable campfires. These provide a focal point for evening gatherings, cooking, and warmth under the high-altitude Idaho stars.
- Vault Toilets: A vault bathroom is conveniently located near the entrance to the campground, offering essential restroom facilities for campers.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial for visitors to note that there is typically no potable water available at this primitive campground. Campers must bring all the water they will need for drinking, cooking, and sanitation, or be prepared to filter and treat water from natural sources.
- No Hookups: As a primitive campground, Summit Lake does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs. This reinforces its appeal to those seeking a true off-grid experience.
Despite its small size and primitive nature, Summit Lake Campground offers several unique features that make it a compelling choice for certain types of campers:
- High-Elevation Serenity: Perched at over 7,000 feet, the campground offers a cooler climate and a distinct high-mountain environment. This elevation contributes to stunning views, clear night skies perfect for stargazing, and an escape from lower-elevation heat.
- Intimate Camping Experience: With only about five campsites, Summit Lake Campground is ideal for those seeking solitude and a quiet connection with nature. It’s perfect for campers who prefer to avoid crowded areas and enjoy a more personal outdoor adventure.
- Relatively Level Sites: The campsites are described as relatively level, which is a significant advantage for setting up tents or positioning smaller trailers, making for a more comfortable stay.
- Proximity to Summit Lake: While one reviewer mentioned not visiting the lake, the campground’s name suggests its close proximity to Summit Lake itself. This typically implies opportunities for fishing (check local regulations for species and seasons), non-motorized boating (such as kayaks or paddleboards), and simply enjoying the tranquility of a high-mountain lake. Researching current lake conditions and access before your trip is advisable.
- Boise National Forest Access: Being within the Boise National Forest means campers have immediate access to a vast network of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. The surrounding forest is home to diverse flora and fauna, offering endless exploration opportunities.
- Peace and Quiet: Given its size and location, Summit Lake Campground frequently offers a peaceful environment. Reviews highlight instances where no one else was using the campground, underscoring its potential for undisturbed solitude.

Summit Lake Campground Reviews
It was a small campground, maybe 5 campsites at most. Each had a metal fire pit and were relatively level. The sites were not very big so a larger trailer would definitely not fit. A 20 foot trailer could probably fit in at least two of the sites. There is a vault bathroom near the entrance to the campground. I didn't go to the lake. The road to the campground is paved, but the road going in is gravel. The gravel road to the campground is very short, maybe a 309 feet long. This campsite is at over 7,000 feet elevation. No one was using the campground when I was there.
