This placement means direct access to the vast natural playground of the national forest, offering immediate opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the serene mountain environment. The campground is described as "secluded" and "peaceful," providing a true escape from urban noise, yet it remains accessible. Wytheville, a charming town in Southwest Virginia, is relatively nearby, providing essential services like grocery stores, gas stations, and dining options, ensuring convenience without detracting from the remote feel of the campground. For those traveling on major interstates like I-81 or I-77, Stony Fork Campground is typically just a short and scenic drive off the main highway, making it an easy destination for Virginians from various parts of the state. Its deep integration within the national forest system means that renowned trails and natural attractions are literally at your doorstep, making it an ideal base for exploring the region's wilderness.
Stony Fork Campground is highly praised for its well-maintained facilities and thoughtful services that enhance the camping experience. They focus on providing essential comforts while maintaining a natural, serene atmosphere:
- Varied Campsites: The campground offers a diverse range of sites to suit different preferences. These include electric sites for RVs and trailers, as well as more primitive sites without electric hookups that are often described as the "prettiest and near creek." Sites vary in size, shade, and angle, but are generally "easy to get into."
- Well-Maintained Bathhouses: A consistent highlight in reviews, the bathhouses are noted for being "clean, good pressure, water hot." This is a significant comfort for campers, ensuring a refreshing experience.
- Clean Showers: Dedicated showers within the bathhouses are clean and offer good water pressure and hot water, a crucial amenity after a day of outdoor activities.
- Water Spigots: Potable water spigots are conveniently located throughout the campground and on some individual sites, providing easy access to fresh water.
- Dump Station: For RV campers, a functional dump station is available on the "other side of the highway" from the main campground. It's noted for its proper design, including a "sewer hole is on the left side" and a water hose for flushing.
- Hiking Trails from Campground: A major convenience for outdoor enthusiasts, there are direct "hiking trails from campground," allowing guests to explore the surrounding national forest right from their site.
- Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: While not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews, it's standard for federal campgrounds to provide fire rings and picnic tables at each site for cooking and outdoor dining.
- On-Site Host/Manager: The presence of friendly and helpful staff, like "Clayton," ensures that guests have assistance and support during their stay.
Stony Fork Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a standout choice for Virginians seeking an authentic outdoor experience:
- Beautiful and Secluded Setting: The most emphasized highlight is the campground's "beautiful, secluded, peaceful place" within the Jefferson National Forest. This provides an immediate sense of escape and tranquility, perfect for relaxation and nature immersion.
- Access to Jefferson National Forest & Appalachian Trail: Its location within the national forest provides direct access to extensive hiking opportunities. While not explicitly stated, proximity to the Appalachian Trail (AT) or its feeder trails is common for campgrounds in this part of Virginia, making it ideal for AT hikers or those looking to explore similar long-distance paths.
- Diversity of Sites: The campground's variety of sites—some near the creek, some shaded, some with electric hookups—ensures there’s a perfect spot for nearly every type of camper, from those in smaller RVs to tent campers seeking a more rustic feel. Reviewers note the "ones without electric seem to be the prettiest and near creek."
- Exceptional Facilities Cleanliness: The consistent praise for "well maintained sites and bathhouses" and "showers are clean, good pressure, water hot" is a strong indicator of the campground's commitment to guest comfort, which is often a top priority for campers.
- Creek-Side Ambiance: Many sites are located next to the Stony Fork Creek, offering the soothing sounds of flowing water and opportunities for simple creek activities, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: The positive mention of "Clayton was super friendly and helpful" highlights the hospitable and supportive environment provided by the campground staff, contributing to a pleasant stay.
- Great Value: At $26 for an electric site, it's described as "nice clean campsites" and "lots of very nice sites," indicating excellent value for the quality of the experience and amenities provided.
- Repeat Visitor Potential: The definite declaration of "Definitely we'd stay again" underscores the high satisfaction and appeal of the campground.
As a campground likely managed by the U.S. Forest Service or a concessionaire under their purview, Stony Fork Campground typically operates on a fixed fee structure rather than offering complex "promotions or special offers" like private commercial campgrounds. The review indicates an affordable rate of $26 for an electric site, which is quite competitive for a well-maintained campground within a national forest. Rates for non-electric sites might be slightly lower. While specific seasonal discounts are uncommon for federal campgrounds, they often participate in interagency passes like the America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass, which can offer discounts on camping fees (typically 50% off for Senior/Access Pass holders). For the most accurate and up-to-date pricing, reservation policies, and any potential federal pass discounts, it is always recommended for Virginia locals to contact the campground directly or check the official recreation.gov website, where many federal campsites can be reserved. Booking in advance, especially for weekend and peak season stays, is highly advisable due to its popularity.

Stony Fork Campground Reviews
Beautiful campground with well maintained sites and bathhouses. Showers are clean, good pressure, water hot. Sites come in a variety, one is a pull through, many are not big rig friendly, some are not well shaded but most are, some are slightly on an angle, some are next to the creek, but all are easy to get into. The ones without electric seem to be the prettiest and near creek. Hiking trails from campground. Water spigots in various locations & on some sites. Just a wonderful, secluded, peaceful place. Dump station on other side of the highway & works. Sewer hole is on the left side (not in the middle where you might expect it) next to a water hose for flushing.
Jun 05, 2025 · Constance MierNice clean campsites. We had a big site! Quiet, beautiful, wooded. $26 for electric site. Lots of very nice sites. Creek is nice. Clayton was super friendly and helpful. Definitely we'd stay again.
Apr 22, 2025 · Mary EsalaVery basic campground. A trail and no extras. Bathrooms were very outdated and need some updating. Park was clean but deteriorating in many ways. The picnic tables are rotting, the campfire rings are a pile of rust, and the Stony Fork Campground sign is crumbling. Park just needs some tlc to get back into shape.
Jun 10, 2025 · CornBread !Our second stay at Stony Fork Cabin. Stocked with everything you'd possibly need. Washer/dryer. Kitchen, full bath. Quiet campground with helpful, friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Jun 15, 2025 · A Sprinkle (TarheelBlueAngel)This is a small but very nice USFS campground with spacious sites and quiet surroundings. There is a little bit of road noise on the loop section next to the highway, but other than that it’s very quiet. Lots of birds in the area so bring your binoculars. Our camp host, Terry, was quite friendly and made sure we had everything we needed and kept the bathrooms clean and well stocked. We stayed just a few weeks after Hurricane Helene, so hiking trails had not yet been restored, but we will definitely be back to check those out next year. The fall colors were just past their peak in late October, but the drive up to Big Walker Lookout was still quite scenic and we even got to enjoy live music there on a Saturday afternoon. This was our first time camping at Stony Fork, but we will definitely be back.
