It's a place where the sounds of the city fade, replaced by the whispers of the wind and the calls of local wildlife. Stockade Spring Campground is situated in the rugged, scenic area near Dayton, Washington. Its exact address is Dayton, WA 99328, USA. This location places it within reach of the Tri-Cities area, making it a viable option for a weekend escape for many in the region who are seeking cooler temperatures, especially during the warmer months. Getting to Stockade Spring involves navigating some less-traveled roads, emphasizing its primitive nature. Visitors should be prepared for country roads, some of which may be logging roads. While the drive itself can be part of the adventure, offering glimpses of stunning Washington scenery, it’s advisable to check local road conditions, especially if traveling during less predictable weather. Accessibility is generally good for vehicles, though larger RVs might find some of the turns or unpaved sections more challenging. The remoteness contributes to the peaceful atmosphere, ensuring a genuine escape from everyday noise and light pollution.
As a primitive campground, Stockade Spring offers a minimalist approach to amenities, which is precisely what appeals to many of its visitors. This isn't a place with paved sites, full hookups, or elaborate visitor centers. Instead, it offers the essential services for a self-sufficient camping experience:
- Designated fire rings: While basic, these allow for campfires (when conditions permit) and outdoor cooking, a quintessential part of the camping experience.
- Open camping areas: There aren't strictly defined, numbered sites, offering more flexibility for campers to find their preferred spot, often off to the right of the main road or on ridges.
- Natural surroundings: The primary "service" is the undisturbed natural environment, providing ample space for quiet reflection, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the rugged landscape.
The charm of Stockade Spring Campground lies in its untouched beauty and the unique experiences it offers. Here are some of its key features and highlights:
- Primitive Camping Experience: This is a major highlight for those seeking an authentic outdoor adventure. It’s not a commercial campground, meaning no fees and a true "out in nature" feeling. This provides a sense of freedom and wildness that is increasingly rare.
- Stargazing Opportunities: Due to its remote location and minimal light pollution, Stockade Spring is an exceptional spot for stargazing. On clear nights, the night sky comes alive with an astonishing display of stars, planets, and even the Milky Way, offering a breathtaking experience.
- Wildlife Viewing: Visitors have reported seeing bears across canyons, and the area is rich in diverse wildlife. This offers incredible opportunities for nature photography and observing animals in their natural habitat.
- Rugged Terrain: The country here is described as "straight up and down," indicating steep inclines and declines. While not ideal for small children due to the challenging landscape, it's perfect for experienced hikers seeking a more demanding trek and breathtaking views.
- Peace and Quiet: Without the crowds often found at more developed campgrounds, Stockade Spring offers unparalleled tranquility. It's the perfect place to unplug, unwind, and enjoy the profound silence of nature.
- Proximity to Natural Features (with a note on the spring): While the name suggests a spring, visitor reviews indicate the actual spring might be over a mile from the main fire rings, and access for horses or ATVs can be challenging, past camps on the left and behind a guard rail. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water.
- Escape from Town: Many visitors choose Stockade Spring precisely because it offers a complete escape from urban environments, allowing for a deep immersion in wilderness.

Stockade Spring Campground Reviews
Interesting place to stop. Very nice too. Makes you wish you had a horse to ride up those mountain trails.Need to learn to ride a horse 1st😉
May 10, 2021 · ellie AtteberryWell, we picked this spot based on how close it was to Tri Cities and cooler in August than home. This is good camping off to the right of the main road, but no spring for over a mile from actual fire rings up on the ridges. The spring is past camps on the left. Bring enough water for stock because there is none.To the spring go up on the left behind a gaurd rail closed road that's hard to access for horses or ATV's. We saw some bears across the canyon. Country is straight up and down, not a good place if you have small kiddos. Great primative location to get away from town and enjoy the stars and quiet. No camp fees no real camp ground. Your out in nature that part rocks!! Not advised for horse back riding, your stuck to roads and logging roads.
