Nice campground. The bathrooms are pit toilets but were some of the nicest I've used. There is one spot to get clean water, so bring containers to carry / store it. Because Black Canyon is a dark sky park, the campground has minimal lighting which allows for SPECTACULAR views of the night sky.The only real issue we had was our site being double booked. We arrived at our site to find a tent already there. We tried to find a camp host or ranger but were unable to locate either. A couple hours later, the guy returned and he also had a printed reservation. He also tried to get ahold of someone to help resolve the problem, but had no luck. Fortunately, the site next to us was empty (the people had left early), and he graciously moved into that site. We never did see the camp host. - Mandie Langman

South Rim Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals yearning for an unparalleled natural experience that combines breathtaking geology with pristine night skies, South Rim Campground in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers an extraordinary destination. This isn't just any campground; it's your direct portal to one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring landscapes in our state. Imagine waking up to the vastness of a canyon so deep and narrow, it earned its "black" moniker, then spending your evenings under a celestial display so vivid it feels like you can touch the Milky Way. South Rim Campground provides a rustic yet incredibly rewarding basecamp for exploring the unique wonders of the Black Canyon, inviting you to connect with nature on a profound level.

The allure of South Rim Campground lies in its ability to facilitate a true immersion into the heart of the Black Canyon. While it’s designed for those who appreciate a more self-sufficient camping style – largely without the luxuries of full hookups – its fundamental amenities are thoughtfully maintained, as highlighted by visitors who describe the pit toilets as "some of the nicest" they’ve used. The true "draw" here, as many Coloradans understand, isn't the campground itself, but the spectacular natural phenomenon it provides access to. As an International Dark Sky Park, Black Canyon ensures minimal light pollution, delivering "SPECTACULAR views of the night sky" that are a rarity in our increasingly lit world. For those ready to leave the distractions of modern life behind for a day or two, to embrace the quiet, the vastness, and the unblemished night sky, South Rim Campground promises a deeply rewarding adventure right here in our incredible home state.

South Rim Campground is strategically located at S Rim Rd, Montrose, CO 81401, USA, placing it directly within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This prime location means that campers have immediate access to the park's most iconic viewpoints and trailheads on the South Rim. The park itself is situated in Western Colorado, approximately 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, via U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 347. This makes it a relatively accessible destination for Coloradans from various parts of the state, particularly those on the Western Slope.

Access to the campground involves driving into Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, requiring an entrance fee or a valid national park pass. The campground itself is located about one mile (1.6 km) from the South Rim Visitor Center. The roads within the park leading to and within the campground are paved, ensuring relatively smooth travel for vehicles and RVs. Loop B of the campground is particularly notable for being able to accommodate RVs and trailers, though some sites may require careful maneuvering and leveling. While the park is open year-round, certain sections or services may be seasonal. For example, drinking water is typically available from mid-May to mid-October. During winter, the South Rim Drive beyond Gunnison Point closes to vehicles but is groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with the campground often operating on a first-come, first-served basis during this time. Visitors should always check the National Park Service website for the most current information on road conditions, closures, and seasonal access, especially if planning a trip during the shoulder seasons or winter.

South Rim Campground, as a National Park Service facility, provides essential services designed to support a rustic yet comfortable camping experience, with an emphasis on preserving the natural environment and facilitating park exploration.

  • 102 Designated Campsites: The campground offers 102 sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs. Sites are generally "fairly close together and partially shaded by Gambel oak and serviceberry bushes," providing a natural feel.
  • Electric Hookups (Loop B): While most sites are primitive, Loop B uniquely offers 20 and 30 amp electric hookups, providing a valuable option for RV campers who desire power. However, no water or sewer hookups are available for RV tanks directly at sites.
  • Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets are available throughout the campground. Visitors frequently praise their cleanliness, noting they are "some of the nicest" pit toilets experienced.
  • Potable Water: Drinking water is available from communal spigots, typically one per loop. Campers are advised to "bring containers to carry / store it" as there are no direct water hookups at sites, and it's "low pressure bottle fill only; not something you can fill freshwater tanks from." Water is generally available mid-May to mid-October.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring or grate, perfect for cooking and enjoying a campfire (always check for current fire restrictions).
  • Bear Boxes: Bear-resistant food storage lockers are provided at each site to ensure food safety and protect wildlife.
  • No Showers or Dish Cleaning Stations: Campers should be prepared for no shower facilities or dedicated dishwashing stations. Gray water collection systems are encouraged, with small amounts of dishwashing gray water allowed in pit toilets in a pinch.
  • Ranger Programs: The campground amphitheater often hosts evening ranger programs during the summer months, offering educational talks on geology, wildlife, and the park's dark skies.

These services prioritize functionality and conservation, aligning with the national park experience.

South Rim Campground's primary features and highlights revolve around its exceptional natural setting and the unique experiences it offers within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, making it a compelling choice for Colorado locals.

  • Spectacular Dark Sky Park Designation: Black Canyon of the Gunnison was certified as an International Dark Sky Park in 2015. This means the campground has "minimal lighting which allows for SPECTACULAR views of the night sky." Visitors consistently rave about the "awesome stars and night view of the Canyon," with the Milky Way often clearly visible.
  • Dramatic Canyon Views: The campground offers convenient access to the South Rim's stunning overlooks, providing unparalleled vistas into one of North America's deepest and narrowest canyons. Features like the Painted Wall, the highest sheer cliff in Colorado, are easily accessible.
  • Access to Hiking Trails: The campground is a perfect base for exploring the park's diverse hiking opportunities. The Rim Rock Nature Trail is right within the grounds, and it's an "easy mile's walk to the visitor center" where other trails like the Uplands Trail and Oak Flat Loop Trail begin.
  • Wildlife Sightings: Campers often report seeing wildlife, including deer, within the campground, adding to the immersive nature experience.
  • Well-Maintained Pit Toilets: Despite being pit toilets, visitors consistently commend their cleanliness and upkeep, which enhances the overall comfort of a rustic camping experience.
  • Convenience for RVs (Loop B): The availability of electric hookups in Loop B provides a valuable option for RV campers, balancing rustic charm with a touch of modern convenience, which is a rare find in many national park campgrounds.
  • Opportunities for Ranger Programs: During the summer, evening educational programs at the campground amphitheater offer insights into the park's natural and cultural history, enhancing the visitor experience.
  • Secluded Feel (despite proximity): While sites can be "fairly close together," the dense Gambel oak and serviceberry bushes provide a sense of natural separation and privacy.

These highlights ensure a memorable and deeply connected experience with one of Colorado's most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
