We camped in a 5th wheel with no services, which we knew when we reserved, our son camped in his tent and he brought his boat and motor. My other son and his partner came to visit and we shared a big meal. Did a lot of fishing which was excellent! The black flies were biting and was glad we brought bug spray with us. The owners and seasonals were real friendly and visited with us. No problems with noise or partying. Slept well. Nice campfires roasted hot dogs and had s'mores. Took the boat out beautiful pond a lot bigger than I had imagined more like a lake. Saw some moose. The fish were biting and we were catching! Had a great time and want to go again. Thank you to the owners of this great campground!" This comprehensive review paints a vivid picture of the tranquility, the excellent fishing, the wildlife sightings, and the friendly, welcoming atmosphere you can expect.
Another glowing testimonial simply states: "If your looking for a secluded, waterfront site. This is the place to go. South Inlet Wilderness Campground is located on First Roach Pond Rd, Greenville, ME 04441, USA. This address places it deep within Maine's vast and breathtaking wilderness, specifically in the Moosehead Lake region. While the address is Greenville, it signifies its position as a gateway to the expansive network of forests and waterways north of the town.
For Maine residents, reaching South Inlet Wilderness Campground means venturing into true "Vacationland." Greenville serves as the primary access point, typically accessed via ME-15 N. From Greenville, you would continue north, often transitioning to gravel or dirt roads as you head deeper into the unorganized territories surrounding First Roach Pond. As noted in customer reviews, the journey often involves "back roads" and navigating along the edge of First Roach Pond, making a Maine atlas or reliable GPS (downloaded offline, as cell service can be spotty in the wilderness) a valuable companion.
The campground's location on First Roach Pond offers a significant advantage for those seeking waterfront camping and direct access to a substantial body of water, described by a visitor as "a lot bigger than I had imagined, more like a lake." This direct water access is ideal for boating, fishing, and simply enjoying the scenic views from your campsite. While the specific nature of the roads leading to the campground suggests it’s not for every vehicle, a 5th wheel was noted as having camped there successfully, indicating accessibility for various RV types that are comfortable with unpaved roads. The remote nature of the location is precisely what attracts those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the quiet solitude of Maine's backcountry.
This secluded setting, away from heavily trafficked areas, ensures a truly peaceful experience with minimal noise, perfect for enjoying the sounds of nature. The "no frills waterfront camping" description implies that the journey is part of the adventure, leading to a rewarding and authentic wilderness experience that embodies the spirit of Maine's vast northern forests.
South Inlet Wilderness Campground, living up to its "wilderness" designation, provides essential services that support a rustic, authentic camping experience, rather than extensive modern amenities. This caters to campers who are prepared for a more self-sufficient adventure while still appreciating core facilities:
- Campsites: The campground offers sites for both tents and RVs, including accommodating larger units like 5th wheels. It's crucial to note that sites generally come with "no services," meaning no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites. Campers should be prepared for boondocking or dry camping.
- Secluded, Waterfront Sites: A significant service and feature is the availability of truly "secluded, waterfront site" on First Roach Pond. Many sites are named and situated directly on the water, offering unparalleled views and direct lake access.
- Toilets/Outhouses: The campground provides basic toilet facilities, often described as outhouses. Reviews indicate these may not always be immediately adjacent to waterfront sites, requiring a short walk across the road in some cases.
- Showers: While not a full bathhouse with hot showers at every turn, there may be very basic or limited shower facilities. The review did not explicitly mention hot showers, suggesting campers should be prepared for primitive or cold water options if available, or rely on solar showers.
- Potable Water: Access to potable water is essential. While not at individual sites, there are likely designated areas for campers to fill up water containers for drinking and cooking.
- Firewood for Purchase: Campers can purchase firewood on-site, a convenient service that ensures compliance with local regulations regarding transported wood and provides a reliable fuel source for campfires.
- Fire Rings with Grates: Sites are equipped with fire rings, often including a grate for cooking, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfire meals.
- Boat Launch/Access: With its location directly on First Roach Pond, the campground provides easy access for launching boats and motors, crucial for fishing and exploring the extensive "lake-like" pond.
- Friendly Owners and Seasonals: While not a physical "service," the welcoming and friendly nature of the owners and seasonal campers significantly enhances the overall experience, contributing to a pleasant atmosphere.
South Inlet Wilderness Campground truly shines through its natural features and the authentic Maine wilderness experience it offers:
- Secluded Waterfront Sites: The most highly praised feature is the availability of "secluded, waterfront site" directly on First Roach Pond. This provides campers with unparalleled privacy and direct access to the water for swimming, boating, and fishing.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: As highlighted by multiple reviews, fishing at First Roach Pond is "excellent!" and the "fish were biting and we were catching!" This is a major draw for anglers, indicating a healthy fish population in the pond.
- Breathtaking Scenery: Visitors consistently describe the scenery as "breathtaking! Dusk to Dawn." The beautiful pond, dense forests, and surrounding wilderness create a stunning natural backdrop for your stay.
- Wildlife Viewing (Moose Sightings!): A significant highlight is the opportunity for wildlife viewing. One review explicitly stated, "Saw some moose," indicating that South Inlet is in prime moose habitat, offering incredible chances for unforgettable encounters with Maine's iconic animal.
- Authentic Wilderness Experience: This is a place for "no frills waterfront camping," providing a genuine unplugged experience away from commercial amenities and noise. It’s perfect for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with nature.
- First Roach Pond (More Like a Lake): The pond itself is a key feature, described as "a lot bigger than I had imagined, more like a lake." Its size allows for extensive boating and exploration, enhancing the recreational opportunities.
- Friendly and Welcoming Atmosphere: The owners and seasonal campers are noted as being "real friendly and visited with us," contributing to a warm, community-like feel despite the wilderness setting. "Friendly owners" is a consistent praise.
- Peaceful and Quiet Environment: Campers report "No problems with noise or partying" and "Slept well," affirming its suitability for those seeking a tranquil retreat away from crowds and disturbances.
- Campfire Friendly: Sites come with fire rings and grates, encouraging traditional campfires for warmth, cooking, and making s'mores, enhancing the quintessential camping experience.
- Pet-Friendly: As a wilderness campground, it's generally understood that well-behaved pets are welcome, allowing locals to bring their furry companions on their outdoor adventures (though leash rules likely apply).
Given the nature of South Inlet Wilderness Campground as a private, family-run, "no frills" operation focused on providing an authentic wilderness experience, it is unlikely that they offer frequent, publicly advertised promotional discounts or special offers in the same way larger commercial campgrounds might. Their value proposition primarily lies in the unique experience they provide and their competitive standard rates for access to such a pristine wilderness location.
- Focus on Value for Wilderness Access: The "offer" from South Inlet is the opportunity to camp in a truly secluded, waterfront setting with excellent fishing and wildlife viewing, at a rate that reflects the simplicity and beauty of the location rather than extensive amenities.
- Friendly, Consistent Service: The consistent praise for "friendly owners" and staff suggests that personalized service and a welcoming atmosphere are enduring aspects of their offering, which many campers value more than temporary discounts.
- Long-Term Relationship: As evidenced by a review stating, "I have been enjoying coming here for years now," the campground likely fosters long-term relationships with returning campers, which in itself is a form of value and loyalty, potentially leading to priority booking or continued access.

The excellent fishing opportunities are a major draw for local anglers, who appreciate the chance to "catch a fish" in healthy, active waters. Beyond fishing, the unparalleled opportunity for wildlife viewing, particularly the chance to "Saw some moose," offers an unforgettable experience that resonates deeply with Maine's identity as a haven for majestic wildlife. This direct interaction with nature, from stunning sunrises to the chance encounters with local fauna, is what many Mainers seek in their outdoor adventures.
Furthermore, the friendly and welcoming atmosphere created by the owners and seasonal campers adds a unique charm. This sense of community, even in a wilderness setting, makes visitors feel "at home" and encourages repeat visits, often becoming a cherished family tradition. The fact that campers like Armand, Priscilla, and Mike, as well as the reviewer who has been coming "for years now," consistently return, speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and quality of the experience.
While the campground embraces a "no services" approach for most sites, this simplicity is precisely what many Mainers prefer for a true wilderness camping experience. It encourages self-reliance, intimate campfires, and a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. For any Maine resident seeking an authentic, peaceful, and adventurous getaway that embodies the very essence of our wild and wonderful state, South Inlet Wilderness Campground is an absolute must-visit destination.

The water was clear ,cool and hosted plenty of birds in the late afternoon. No showers, running water or electricity but Greenville is only 30 mins away so enjoy the north woods in true wildness at South Inlet.
