Understanding what to expect at a rustic state forest campground like South Gemini Lake is key to maximizing your enjoyment. This guide will provide Michigan residents with all the essential information to plan a fulfilling and unforgettable camping trip to this serene Upper Peninsula destination, from its location and accessibility to the activities and features that make it so special.
South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground is located near Shingleton, MI 49884, USA. Situated on the southern shore of Gemini Lake, a 120-acre lake in northwest Schoolcraft County, this campground offers a truly secluded feel. While its address is listed as Shingleton, it’s important for visitors to note that it's approximately 16 miles northeast of Shingleton and about 10 miles south of the magnificent Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Accessing the campground involves navigating a dirt road. According to reviews, the 6-mile dirt road leading to the campground can take about half an hour to traverse, so patience and careful driving are advised. While some visitors have managed with standard vehicles like a Kia Soul (going slow, especially after heavy rains), the road can become challenging, described as "adventurous or challenging depending on how you look at things" after heavy rains. It's generally reported to dry up within a day or two. The remoteness of the location is part of its charm, ensuring a peaceful and less crowded experience than more developed campgrounds. It's recommended to take the route down Twin Lakes Truck Trail off H-58 for the best road conditions.
Upon arrival, campers will find a small loop with only 8 campsites, ensuring an intimate and quiet atmosphere. This limited number of sites contributes significantly to the feeling of having the lake almost entirely to yourself. The campground's proximity to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore also means it serves as an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the iconic sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and hiking trails of this renowned national treasure.
Rustic Campsites: South Gemini Lake offers 8 rustic campsites, meaning they are designed for tent camping and smaller trailers. Some of these sites are located right on the water, providing incredible views and easy lake access.
Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets, which are consistently reviewed as being "extremely clean for what they are." While primitive, their cleanliness ensures a more comfortable experience.
Hand-Pump Well for Water: Potable (drinking) water is available from a hand-pump well on-site. Visitors should be aware that the water from the hand pump can sometimes be sandy, so bringing bottled water for drinking is a good idea, especially if you prefer clearer water.
Picnic Tables and Fire Pits with Grills: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit, often with a grill grate. These essential amenities allow for comfortable outdoor dining and traditional campfire cooking, enhancing the rustic camping experience.
Boat Launch: A designated boat launch, suitable for non-motorized boats like canoes or kayaks, is centrally located within the campground. This provides easy access to Gemini Lake for paddling and fishing.
No Reservations: Sites at South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means no need to book months in advance, but it also suggests arriving early, especially during peak season, to secure a desirable spot.
Secluded and Quiet Atmosphere: With only 8 sites, South Gemini Lake is known for its exceptional quietness and remote feel. This is a significant highlight for campers looking to escape crowded areas and enjoy true tranquility.
Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Gemini Lake is renowned for its fishing. Reviewers consistently praise the "amazing" fishing, with catches of Pike and Smallmouth Bass. Some even report catching large smallmouth bass directly from the shore at their campsite, making it a fantastic spot for anglers of all skill levels.
Waterfront Sites: Several campsites are located directly on the water, offering stunning lake views and immediate access for fishing or simply enjoying the serene lakeside environment. These are highly sought-after spots.
Pet-Friendly: The campground is pet-friendly, allowing Michigan residents to bring their furry companions along for their outdoor adventures. As always, responsible pet ownership, including leashing and cleaning up after pets, is expected.
Close to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Despite its rustic feel, the campground is conveniently located less than ten miles from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This makes it an ideal basecamp for day trips to explore the iconic cliffs, waterfalls, and hiking trails of the national lakeshore.
No Cell Service: For many, the complete lack of cell service is a major highlight, offering a true opportunity to disconnect and immerse oneself in nature without digital distractions. This "unplugged" experience is a core part of the rustic appeal.
Gemini Lake Pathway: A 1.5-mile pathway starts right at the campground, offering opportunities for hiking and enjoying the surrounding forest. In winter, this pathway is also suitable for snowshoeing, and the area allows for ORV and snowmobile operation between the campground and nearby trails.
Motorhome Accommodation: While rustic, some sites, such as site 4, are spacious enough to accommodate larger vehicles like a 28-foot motorhome, making it accessible even for those with bigger rigs, provided they navigate the dirt road carefully.

South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
A little late to this review as we went back in July, but my girlfriend and myself had an amazing time here for a little weekend fishing trip!We were lucky enough to have our pick of all the campsites, and took one of the big ones right on the water. We couldn’t have asked for a better set up. Bugs were bad but we knew that coming in. I’ve slowly been adding to my camping arsenal, and this trip is what pushed me to finally get an enclosed screen tent. Most of these state forest campgrounds have picnic tables, so I figure next time I can just put the screened in tent right over that and eat/cook without getting attacked.Fishing was amazing! We had a 2 person blow up fishing raft and caught a solid amount of Pike and Smallmouths. Pike were all small, but my girlfriend caught one of the biggest smallies I’ve seen in person, and it was right from the shore at our campsite! It was an amazing trip, and we will definitely be back.
Feb 09, 2025 · Joe FudaczGreat Campground on the quiet side of lake. 8 sites total on small loop. It is rustic but what we love. The vault toilet were extremely clean for what they are. We had site 4 right on the water. Plenty of room for my 28 motorhome. Site 5 on water. Boat launch for no motorized. The guys were catching fish. Dirt road was good going slow towing my kia soul. Heavy rains made traveling adventurous or challenging depending on how you look at things. Dried up in a day or two. No service which is good. 6 mile dirt road took about half hour out to paved road and the middle section of Pictured Rocks. Munising to the left Grand Marquis to the right.
Sep 08, 2020 · Ziglerson TravelsQuiet campground with 9 sites on the south side of Gemini Lake. Sites 4 and 5 sit right on the water and offer great views. Lake was very quiet with a few homes on it, great for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. There are 2 pit toilets here that were hands down the cleanest ones I have ever used, like brand new! There is a 1.6 mile hiking loop that leaves right from the park, which offers lake views most of the hike. There are some downed trees and it has not been maintained well, but still a good hike. Lots of fresh blueberries to pick on the way. If this campground is full there are 3 others that are very close by (within 10 minutes). There is no cell service, but there is good signage indicating how to get to all of the nearby campgrounds, which are also on small lakes.
Sep 06, 2023 · Alyssa BattleA very beautiful spot to camp. No water except a well pump, no electric and no dump station. There are vaulted toilets but bring your own TP.Price went up to $20 which is pretty discouraging since they don't really keep the campground maintained. The site had a lot of garbage on it.There is a trail right from the campground, but it is not maintained at all. All the guide post have fallen over or decayed away... Be prepared to turn around because the ramps are wore down and you will soak your shoes. The mosquitoes are really bad! The swarms of them make it unbearable to hike. It was cold out when we went, but as soon as it got warm, we had to leave.
May 31, 2022 · JimCampground are nice & quiet. Restrooms are clean. South Gemini Pathway is in really bad shape. One bridge is so rotted its not really there and other is so loose it is a hazard.Trail is quite overgrown & markings are hard to find if they are even there. Too bad cause it looks like it was a nice trail before it fell into disrepair. It needs soy major TLC
