Soda Butte Campground

Campground ★4.0

Silver Gate, MT 59081, USA

4.0
This was one of our favorite spots that we camped during our Sept '23 roadtrip through Montana and Wyoming. It is pretty remote and bears frequent the area. there are boxes so be bear aware and maybe read up on the bear attack history BEFORE you go, not the first night right before bed hahah It was a lovely campground and we will definitely go back! In '23 when we were there, the nightly fee was $20, paid at a self service station. - Whitney Leach

It provides a distinct and memorable camping experience that is a world away from the busy, more crowded areas of the region. This article is your comprehensive guide to this unique destination, designed to give you a clear, engaging, and factual overview of what to expect from your visit.

Soda Butte Campground is not just another place to park your RV; it’s an immersive experience in the heart of bear country, surrounded by thick vegetation that makes you feel as though the forest is gently embracing the entire area. While it is very close to the bustling attractions of Yellowstone National Park, a visit here feels like a complete change of pace. It's a place for those who seek tranquility and a genuine connection with nature. We understand that Montanans value authenticity and a sense of adventure, and Soda Butte delivers on both fronts. We aim to provide all the essential information you need to prepare for a safe and enjoyable trip, from its services to the important safety considerations.

This guide will cover the practical aspects of Soda Butte Campground, including its location, available amenities, and key features. We will also address important points noted by past visitors, such as the hard-sided vehicle requirement and the active wildlife presence. By presenting a factual and balanced view, we hope to help you decide if this special campground is the perfect spot for your next Montana and Yellowstone adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Soda Butte Campground is conveniently located in Silver Gate, Montana, with the address Silver Gate, MT 59081, USA. This places it just outside the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, making it a perfect base camp for exploring both the park's famous Lamar Valley and the scenic Beartooth Highway. The campground’s location offers the best of both worlds: close proximity to world-class attractions while maintaining a peaceful, removed atmosphere.

The campground is well-suited for RV camping, and accessibility is a key factor. It features on-site parking and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, which speaks to its commitment to accommodating a variety of visitors. However, it is a key point to note that this is a "hard-sided vehicles only" campground due to the active bear population. This means tent camping is not permitted, and campers must be in a vehicle with a solid, hard-sided structure, such as an RV or a travel trailer. This policy is for the safety of all guests and is a crucial detail for anyone planning to visit. The roads leading to the campground are generally well-maintained, but as it is a remote location in a mountainous area, it is always a good idea to check for any potential road closures, especially during the shoulder seasons.

Features / Highlights

Soda Butte Campground stands out for several unique features that make it a compelling choice for campers in Montana.

  • Tranquil and Secluded Atmosphere: Despite its proximity to Yellowstone, the campground is very quiet. The sites are well-spaced and surrounded by thick vegetation, which provides a sense of privacy and makes it feel as if you are completely immersed in the forest.
  • Proximity to Wildlife: The area is known to be frequented by bears, and while this requires being "bear aware" and following all safety protocols, it also adds to the sense of adventure and the authentic wilderness experience. The presence of food storage boxes at the campsites is a vital feature for protecting both campers and wildlife.
  • Excellent Location: The campground's location near Silver Gate provides easy access to the Lamar Valley, one of the best places in North America for wildlife viewing, particularly for wolves and bison. It's also a short drive from the historic town of Cooke City and the breathtaking Beartooth Highway.
  • Friendly and Clean Environment: Visitor reviews consistently praise the cleanliness of the facilities and the pleasant demeanor of the campground hosts. This attention to detail and a focus on guest safety and comfort make for a very positive experience.
  • First-Come, First-Served: The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning there are no reservations. This can be a highlight for spontaneous travelers, but it also means arriving early, especially on weekends and holidays, is essential to secure a spot.

Contact Information

For information, the provided phone number is (406) 848-7375. Since the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, this number is primarily for general information rather than reservations. The address is Silver Gate, MT 59081, USA. What is worth choosing

Choosing Soda Butte Campground is a decision to prioritize a secluded, quiet, and authentic camping experience over the hustle and bustle of more populated areas. Its most compelling feature is its remarkable atmosphere—it is a rare find to have a campground so close to a major attraction like Yellowstone yet feel so completely enveloped by nature. The thick vegetation and spacious sites create a feeling of privacy and tranquility that many campers actively seek. The hard-sided vehicle policy, while a restriction for some, is a crucial safety measure that adds to the sense of security while in active bear country, making it a responsible choice for RV owners.

Furthermore, the location is a dream for anyone looking to explore the natural wonders of the region. Being a stone's throw from the Lamar Valley means you have unparalleled access to wildlife viewing opportunities, while also being positioned perfectly for a trip over the stunning Beartooth Highway. The cleanliness of the restrooms and the helpfulness of the hosts, as noted in reviews, also contribute to a positive experience. While you will need to be prepared and bear aware, the adventure and the feeling of being truly a part of the Montana wilderness make Soda Butte Campground an exceptional choice for those who are ready for a real and memorable outdoor experience.
