4.0
Very nice tucked away camp ground fairly easy to get too and a short drive from Clovis. The gate is only open from dawn to dusk though so keep that in mind when coming here. This is a managed Campground also with a administrator on site who was friendly but not overly strict like other site admins have been in the past. Dave I think his name was.Me and a few friends stayed here for 3 nights during the week and we were the only people here the entire time which was great. Really enjoyed the lake and scenery. For us it was 30$ a day for the group because we had 3 cars with the site being I think 20$ a nightLots to do nearby also with hiking and another smaller lake up in the hills nearby which gives amazing views of the lake itself! Not much firewood available on the ground as the place is well kept so make sure to plan ahead and bring your own firewood otherwise you'll be mostly stuck with damp rotting wood haha - Kyle Lowman

Smalley Cove Campground is a truly special place, frequently described by visitors as a "very nice tucked away camp ground." Its charm lies in its ability to offer a sense of seclusion and serenity, allowing campers to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Sierra National Forest area. The highlight for many is the breathtaking scenery and the "great" lake access, making it a perfect spot for those who appreciate waterside tranquility.

What sets Smalley Cove apart is its status as a managed campground with an administrator on-site. This personal touch ensures a well-maintained environment and a friendly, helpful presence for campers. Visitors have noted that the on-site administrator, like "Dave," is "friendly but not overly strict," creating a relaxed atmosphere that encourages enjoyment rather than adherence to rigid rules. This balanced approach to management contributes significantly to the positive experience here, fostering a sense of community and ease.

The peaceful ambiance is further underscored by reports of minimal crowds, with some visitors even enjoying the luxury of being "the only people here the entire time" during midweek stays. This makes Smalley Cove ideal for those seeking genuine quiet and privacy, a rare find in many popular camping destinations. Despite its tucked-away feel, the campground maintains "clean restrooms" and is generally "well kept," ensuring that essential comforts are met. With plenty of nearby activities, including hiking and access to another smaller lake with "amazing views," Smalley Cove Campground truly offers a comprehensive and deeply satisfying outdoor experience for Californians looking to reconnect with nature.

Smalley Cove Campground is strategically located on N Fork Rd, North Fork, CA 93643, USA. This address places it within the beautiful Sierra National Forest, near the Kerckhoff Reservoir. Its location offers a fantastic balance of being "tucked away" for a peaceful experience while still being fairly easy to get to, especially for residents in the Central Valley.

The accessibility of Smalley Cove Campground is a significant benefit for Californians. It's just a short drive from Clovis and approximately 44 minutes from Fresno, making it a convenient option for weekend getaways or even longer stays without the hassle of extensive travel. The route to the campground involves turning left onto Auberry Road from Hwy 168 (26 miles northeast of Clovis), then traveling 2.8 miles to Powerhouse Road, turning left, and continuing for 8.4 miles before turning left into the campground. These clear directions ensure a smooth journey to your destination.

One important accessibility detail to note, as highlighted by visitors, is that "the gate is only open from dawn to dusk." This gate schedule requires campers to plan their arrival and departure times accordingly. However, once inside, the ease of access to the lake and nearby hiking opportunities makes the journey well worth it. The surrounding area offers a mix of forested terrain, with scrub oaks and grey pines providing natural shade, contributing to the tranquil atmosphere. Its location within the Sierra National Forest also means it's close to other attractions like Bass Lake and the scenic Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, enhancing the overall accessibility to a wide range of outdoor activities for Californians.

Smalley Cove Campground offers a set of essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience for its visitors.

  • Clean Restrooms: The campground is praised for having "clean restrooms," which is a crucial amenity for any camping trip. While one review mentioned the bath (shower) being $1 for 3 minutes and "a little bit on the warm side" in a different campground, Smalley Cove specifically highlights the cleanliness of its main restroom facilities, indicating a commitment to hygiene.

  • On-Site Administrator/Host: Smalley Cove is a managed campground with an administrator or host on-site. This presence ensures a well-maintained environment and provides campers with a point of contact for assistance or information. Reviewers noted the administrator was "friendly but not overly strict," contributing to a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Picnic Tables and Grills: While not explicitly stated for every site in the provided reviews, managed campgrounds typically equip each campsite with essential amenities like picnic tables for outdoor dining and grills or fire rings for cooking and campfires. Information for similar campgrounds in the area often includes these features.

  • Water Faucet: There is a water faucet available at the campground, providing campers with access to fresh water for drinking, cooking, and other needs.

  • Bear Storage Boxes: The reviews for Meadow Campground (also in the Friant area and likely under similar management policies given the proximity) mentioned bear storage boxes. It's highly probable that Smalley Cove, being in a forested area and part of a managed system, would also provide these crucial containers for safely storing food and scented items, preventing unwanted wildlife encounters.

  • Firewood (Bring Your Own Recommended): While campfires are a part of the camping experience, visitors recommend planning ahead and bringing your own firewood. The ground is described as "well kept," meaning there isn't much readily available firewood on site, and what is found might be "damp rotting wood." This implies that the campground does not typically provide or sell firewood on-site, making pre-planning essential for your bonfire needs.
