About a 1.5 mile hike from the Sky Trailhead parking lot. Parking lot has maybe 10 car capacity, get there early or there may not be space at this trailhead.Sky camp #3 was great, views were nice but some of the campsites definitely had better views. Drinkable water is available + 2 vault-style restrooms. There is one trail that will lead from Sky Camp down to the Coast Camp + the beach, ~4.5 miles one way, it’ll take about 2 hours to completeService reception is very spotty/and calls may or may not get though— once at camp (AT&T), there is 0 signal while hiking on trail. - Alex Le

Whether you're looking to explore the extensive trail network of Point Reyes, capture stunning photography, or simply unwind in a majestic setting, Sky Campground serves as an exceptional basecamp. It embodies the adventurous spirit of California's outdoor culture, inviting locals to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the raw, untouched beauty of their own backyard.

Location and Accessibility

Sky Campground is situated within the magnificent Point Reyes National Seashore, specifically located at Point Reyes Station, CA 94956, USA. Its elevated position on Mount Wittenberg provides its distinct appeal and stunning views. As a backcountry campground, it is important to note that Sky Camp is not accessible by car or RV, making it exclusively a hike-in, bike-in, or horse-in destination. This characteristic contributes to its secluded and peaceful ambiance, setting it apart from more conventional campgrounds.

The primary and shortest access point to Sky Campground is via the Sky Trailhead, located off Limantour Road. From the parking lot, it's approximately a 1.4-mile moderate uphill hike or bicycle ride through beautiful mixed Douglas fir forest. The Sky Trailhead parking lot is relatively small, with capacity for around 10 cars, so arriving early is highly recommended, especially on weekends, to secure a spot. Overflow parking may be available on the shoulders of Limantour Road. For those seeking a more challenging trek, routes from the Bear Valley Trailhead are also available, offering a steeper uphill hike and longer distances (e.g., 2.7 miles via Mt. Wittenberg or Meadow trails).

While the journey to Sky Campground requires some physical effort, it is well worth it. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked, guiding visitors through diverse landscapes including fir forests, oak groves, and chaparral. This accessibility by foot, bike, or horse ensures that the campground remains a pristine wilderness experience, free from vehicular noise and pollution. It allows Californians to truly immerse themselves in the natural environment of Point Reyes, making the hike an integral part of the adventure itself.

It's important for visitors to plan ahead, as cell service is very spotty or non-existent once on the trails and at the campground, especially for providers like AT&T. This encourages a true digital detox, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the natural surroundings. Despite its remote feel, Sky Campground remains a highly sought-after destination due to its unparalleled views and the sense of accomplishment gained from reaching this elevated sanctuary.
