Silver Valley Campground

Arnold, CA 95223, USA

4.0
Sites are nice and far apart. The ground is very tussocky and not level in a lot of spots; the outer ring sites are on a slope. Toilets were kept clean, but in midday there was an unpleasant chemical odor to them. (Better than the alternative, but not a joy.) Nights were fine and unstinky. Bathrooms are unlit at night so the campground is quite dark and the stars are fabulous. Our first night was mostly tent campers, which was very nice; lots of kids riding bikes around the loop. Good family friendly spot. There's a trail that leads you down to the Pine Marten campground and the lake, takes about 5-10 minutes altogether. The lake is wonderful. There are bears!!! It’s designed for campers who appreciate spacious, natural settings over bustling resort-style amenities, providing a genuine High Sierra adventure. Location and Accessibility

Silver Valley Campground is beautifully situated in Arnold, CA 95223, within the vast Stanislaus National Forest. Specifically, it lies at the east end of the popular Lake Alpine Recreation Area, nestled in a forested setting that provides both shade and a sense of seclusion. Its location in the Central Sierra Nevada, between the well-known destinations of Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, makes it an accessible yet wonderfully wild retreat for many Californians.

Access to Silver Valley Campground typically involves driving on Highway 4 (Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway). From Highway 4 at Lake Alpine, you would take the Lake Alpine East Shore road and follow it towards the campground entrance. While the exact turns should always be verified with a current map or GPS, the route is generally well-marked. Arnold itself is a charming mountain town on Highway 4, offering services like gas, groceries, and dining, making it a convenient stop before heading up to the higher elevations of the campground. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 7,400 feet, which means visitors should be prepared for mountain driving conditions and potential changes in weather, even during summer months. The drive itself is scenic, winding through forests and offering glimpses of the stunning Sierra Nevada landscape. Once at the campground, its proximity to Lake Alpine is a significant advantage, with a trail leading directly down to Pine Marten Campground and the lake, a walk that takes about 5-10 minutes. This easy access to the lake greatly enhances the recreational opportunities available right from your campsite.

Services Offered

Silver Valley Campground offers a solid array of essential services designed to provide a comfortable yet rustic camping experience, fitting its Stanislaus National Forest setting. While it doesn't boast the extensive amenities of large commercial parks, it provides what campers truly need for a pleasant and self-sufficient stay.

  • Campsites for Tents, Trailers, and RVs: The campground features 21 campsites that can accommodate a range of camping setups, including tents, trailers, and RVs (with reported capacities from 33 to 53 feet). This flexibility makes it suitable for various types of campers.
  • Campsite Tables: Each site comes with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, and other outdoor activities.
  • Fire Rings: Individual fire rings are provided at each campsite, allowing for safe and contained campfires. Campers are reminded to check current fire restrictions and obtain any necessary campfire permits before lighting a fire.
  • Potable (Drinking) Water: Access to potable water is available within the campground, which is a significant convenience for campers, eliminating the need to haul in large quantities of drinking water.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets, which are non-flush restrooms. While a reviewer noted a "chemical odor" at midday, they confirmed the toilets are "kept clean" and are "fine and unstinky" at night. This provides essential sanitation in a rustic environment.
  • Bear-Resistant Food Storage Boxes: Crucially, the campground provides bear boxes at sites. Given that "There are bears!!!" as highlighted by a reviewer, these boxes are an essential service for safe food storage and protecting both campers and local wildlife. Campers are strongly advised to "USE THE BOXES!!!" for all food and scented items.
  • Camp Host: Reviewers have praised the camp host, with one noting "The host Angel was amazing, very helpful and friendly. My car battery ending up dying and he went above and beyond to help me get it started." This indicates a dedicated and helpful on-site presence for assistance.

It's important to note that the campground generally does not offer electric hookups, showers directly at the campground (though available at nearby Lake Alpine Resort), or cell service (as noted by some sources). Campers should be prepared for a somewhat off-grid experience, focusing on the natural surroundings.

Features / Highlights

Silver Valley Campground stands out with several key features and highlights that make it a truly special destination for Californians looking to immerse themselves in the Sierra Nevada.

  • Proximity to Lake Alpine: A significant highlight is the easy access to Lake Alpine. A "trail that leads you down to the Pine Marten campground and the lake, takes about 5-10 minutes altogether."
