Campground ★4.0

Carey, ID 83320, USA

Epic free BLM camping. Very nice dirt road to get to the sites (there is technically only three but many places along the road to park or throw a tent up). Two vault toilets that had toilet paper, although they couldve used some fly traps. Sunsets were beautiful and I saw some muskrats swimming up the creek!!! - Norah Murphy

Silver Creek (North and South) Introduce

For Idahoans seeking an authentic, no-cost camping experience, the Silver Creek (North and South) campgrounds are an epic find. These sites, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), offer a peaceful, rustic getaway right on the banks of a picturesque stream. Unlike crowded, commercial campgrounds, Silver Creek provides a sense of open space and quiet, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the high desert landscape of Idaho. It’s a destination that appeals to those who appreciate the simple joys of camping—a beautiful view, a clear night sky, and the sound of a creek flowing by. The campgrounds are a testament to the idea that some of the best outdoor experiences are the ones that are free and close to nature.

While there are a few designated sites, the area also welcomes dispersed camping along the road, giving you the freedom to find a spot that feels just right. This flexibility is a huge bonus for those who prefer to be away from the crowds. With a focus on basic amenities and a "pack it in, pack it out" ethos, these sites encourage a deep respect for the environment and a personal connection to the land. It’s a perfect spot for tent campers, anglers, and anyone who wants to unplug from the daily grind and enjoy Idaho's natural beauty on their own terms. The rugged yet accessible feel makes it a favorite for local adventurers.

Silver Creek (North and South) is located near Carey, ID 83320, USA. The campgrounds are situated off of Highway 93, about five miles south of the town of Carey. A BLM sign on the highway marks the turn, and the sites are approximately one mile down a well-graded gravel road. While the BLM notes that long camp trailers or RVs are not recommended due to limited turnaround options, the road itself is described as a "nice graded gravel all weather road," making it accessible for most vehicles, including those with smaller RVs or trailers.

Accessibility is a key feature, as some sites are developed with wheelchair users in mind. This is a significant benefit, as it opens up a genuine outdoor experience to a wider range of visitors. The two southern sites are more developed and include features like accessible double-walled fire rings with grill attachments, covered picnic tables on concrete pads with extended tops for wheelchair users, and a concrete pathway leading to a single vault toilet. This commitment to accessibility is a noteworthy highlight of these BLM sites. The on-site parking is a welcome convenience, making it easy to unload your gear and set up camp. Cell phone reception is also surprisingly good, with excellent service for Verizon and T-Mobile, which provides a sense of security while still feeling remote.

Services Offered:

  • Tent sites: While there are a few designated sites, the area is also conducive to dispersed tent camping, offering numerous spots along the road to set up camp.

  • Public restroom: The sites are equipped with new, clean vault toilets, which one reviewer noted had toilet paper—a simple but highly appreciated amenity.

  • Running water: While the BLM's official website states there is no potable water, one review mentions running water. It's best to bring your own supply or verify the status with the BLM office before your visit to be safe.

  • Picnic tables: Many sites are furnished with picnic tables, some of which are covered by shade canopies, providing a comfortable place for meals and gatherings.

Features / Highlights:

  • Free BLM Camping: The most significant feature of these campgrounds is that they are free. This provides an excellent opportunity for anyone to enjoy camping in Idaho without a camping fee, making it accessible for budget-conscious travelers and families.

  • Peaceful and Quiet: The campgrounds are praised for being "peaceful" and "quiet." The serene environment is perfect for those who want to escape city noise and enjoy the sounds of nature.

  • Stream-side Location: The sites are situated on the bank of a small stream, Silver Creek, which offers a beautiful backdrop and opportunities for fishing and wildlife viewing. Muskrats have even been spotted in the creek!

  • Stargazing Opportunities: The location's distance from major towns and cities means it has very dark skies, offering spectacular opportunities for stargazing and appreciating the constellations.

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: The two southern sites are specifically designed with accessibility in mind, featuring accessible toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables, making it a rare and valuable inclusive option for campers with mobility challenges.

  • Dog-Friendly: The campground welcomes dogs, allowing you to bring your furry companion along for the adventure, which is a great bonus for pet owners.
