Shirley Meadows Campground is conveniently located at Ice House Rd, Wofford Heights, CA 93285, USA. This address places it within the picturesque Kern River Valley, a renowned area for outdoor activities in Southern California. For Californians from various regions, particularly the Central Valley and Southern California, Wofford Heights offers a manageable drive into a refreshing mountain environment. While the campground is situated near a road, as noted by a reviewer, its overall quiet atmosphere, especially at night, ensures a peaceful experience once you've settled in.
Accessibility to Shirley Meadows is generally straightforward, making it a viable option for a wide range of campers, whether you're bringing a tent or a small RV. The roads leading to the campground are typically well-maintained. Its location provides easy access to the broader attractions of the Kern River Valley, including Lake Isabella and the Kern River, which are popular for fishing, boating, and other water sports. Being managed by Kern County often implies consistent oversight and maintenance, contributing to its accessibility and functionality. This combination of an approachable location and management by a local county makes Shirley Meadows Campground a practical and appealing choice for Californians looking for an accessible getaway without venturing too far off the beaten path.
Shirley Meadows Campground offers a commendable range of services that enhance the camping experience, particularly considering its affordable price point. These amenities contribute significantly to visitor comfort and convenience:
- Working Hot Water Showers: A standout feature highly praised by campers, the availability of working hot water showers is a significant convenience, allowing visitors to refresh comfortably after a day of outdoor activities.
- Clean Toilets: Reviewers consistently note that the restrooms are "kept clean by a county employee," ensuring a hygienic and pleasant experience for all campers. This attention to cleanliness is a major positive for public campgrounds.
- Running Water Faucets Near Campsites: The provision of "running waters from faucets near camp grounds" offers easy access to water for cooking, cleaning, and other essential needs at or very close to individual sites. Each site is also noted to have its own water spigot.
- Designated Fire Holes and Standing Grills: Each campsite is equipped with a designated fire hole (fire ring) and standing grills, providing safe and convenient options for campfires and cooking charcoal BBQs, adding to the traditional camping experience.
- Picnic Benches: Every site comes with "1-2 picnic tables," offering ample surface area for meals, games, and socializing, which is ideal for individual families or small groups.
- Affordable Pricing Structure: At a cost of just "$18 to camp here, but for that price you can camp anywhere from 1-14 days," Shirley Meadows offers exceptional value, allowing for extended stays at a very reasonable rate. This pricing makes it highly accessible for budget-conscious campers.
- Regular Maintenance by County Employees: The active involvement of Kern County employees in maintaining the restrooms and grounds speaks to a commitment to keeping the campground functional and clean.
Shirley Meadows Campground, despite its somewhat limited online presence, offers several compelling features and highlights that make it an attractive option for local campers:
- Exceptional Value for Extended Stays: The ability to camp for up to 14 days for a flat fee of $18 is an incredible value. This makes it an ideal spot for those planning longer retreats or multiple short visits within a two-week period, offering unparalleled affordability in California.
- Rustic Charm with Essential Comforts: While it embraces a "dusty dirt" and natural setting, the presence of hot showers, clean toilets, and individual site amenities (fire rings, grills, picnic tables, water spigots) strikes a great balance between a rugged outdoor experience and basic modern conveniences.
- Good Places to Pitch Tents: Campers have found "good places to pitch tents," indicating that despite some uneven terrain, suitable spots are available for traditional tent camping.
- Proximity to Trailheads: The campground offers "numerous trail heads within walking distance," providing immediate access to hiking opportunities in the surrounding Kern County and Sequoia National Forest areas.
- Generally Quiet Atmosphere: Despite being next to a road, reviewers emphasize that it is "pretty quiet though especially later at night," ensuring a peaceful environment conducive to relaxation and star-gazing.
- Non-Reservable, First-Come, First-Served Availability: The apparent lack of a reservation system and "plenty of available spots all weekend" (as per a review) suggests it's a good option for spontaneous trips, reducing the stress of booking months in advance. However, this could change, so confirming current policies is always wise.
- Heavily Shaded: The "heavily shaded" nature of the campground is a significant advantage during California's hot summers, offering natural cooling and comfort. While this can impact solar power, it's a major plus for overall comfort.

Shirley Meadows Campground Reviews
Absolutely gorgeous camp ground with working hot water showers, toilets, running waters from faucets near camp grounds, designated fire holes and standing grills, picnic benches, and good places to pitch tents. It costs $18 to camp here, but for that price you can camp anywhere from 1-14 days. The camp owner is very kind, and I highly recommend this campground.
Jul 19, 2023 · syrusThere isn't much information about this campground available online so here is some more. It is run by Kern County, there don't seem to be reservations available. There were plenty of available spots all weekend. Restrooms and showers were kept clean by a county employee, there was a dedicated site for a camp host but there was not one. Overall not a bad campground but it gets a low rating because only about 3/30ish of the camp sites have level areas and the campground is mainly just dusty dirt and right next to the road. Overall it is pretty quiet though especially later at night. Each site has 1-2 picnic tables, a water spigot, and a fire ring. Additionally, if you are planning to camp using solar power know that it is heavily shaded and few spots have enough clearing to get solar, and you will only get a couple hours worth a day.
