For visitors traveling with horse trailers and larger vehicles, easy access is crucial. Reviews indicate that there is "plenty of room to park and turn our 32 ft trailer," suggesting that the internal roads and campsite layouts are designed to accommodate equestrian setups comfortably. While the exact roads leading to the camp are described as "Unnamed Road, W Raymond Rd" in some general information, the specific directions often involve navigating through Huntersville State Forest. Local sources provide more detailed navigation, typically involving Stocking Lake Road to County Road 23, then to 380th Street and 199th Avenue. Shell City Horse Camp is recognized for providing essential amenities that cater specifically to the needs of horse campers while maintaining a rustic atmosphere. Here’s a detailed look at the services you can expect, based on visitor feedback and general campground information:
- Corrals at Each Campsite: A major highlight, the campground offers individual corrals at each campsite. These include "lovely, roofed and gated stalls about 12x12 with dirt floors" (3 available) and outdoor corrals ranging from "about 10x10 to maybe 20x20" (5 available), providing secure and convenient housing for your horses right at your site.
- Tying Lines: In addition to corrals, there are "about 3 lines for tying" available, offering alternative options for securing horses.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with basic amenities like picnic tables for outdoor dining and fire rings for campfires, enhancing the traditional camping experience.
- Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets, described as a "not so smelly single seat vault toilet," indicating functional and relatively well-maintained primitive restroom facilities. It's important to note that there are no showers available.
- Water Pumps: Water is available via hand pumps. Visitors advise bringing your own drinking water or getting it from a pump at a traditional campground next door, as the pump at the horse camp may yield "yellow" water, although it's still suitable for horses.
- Spacious Parking: There is "plenty of room to park and turn" even a 32-foot trailer, ensuring that campers with large rigs and horse trailers can navigate and settle in comfortably.
- Mounting Block with Hand Rails: A thoughtful addition for equestrians, a nice mounting block with hand rails is available, making it easier and safer to mount horses.
- Garbage Cans: Basic waste disposal facilities are provided to help keep the campground clean.

- Secluded and Private: The fact that campers might have "the whole place to ourselves" (even on a Tuesday evening) suggests a less crowded environment, offering more privacy and a genuine wilderness feel.

Shell City Horse Camp Reviews
Bring your own drinking water or get it from the pump at the traditional campground next door. The pump at horse camp takes more effort and the water comes out yellow. Other than that, it's perfect here! Just the basic amenities and it's so nice having corrals at each campsite. The river is beautiful and the trails are very fun!
Jun 25, 2025 · Ashton KulesaWe arrived at about 7 pm on a Tuesday and found we had the whole place to ourselves. Lovely, roofed and gated stalls about 12x12 with dirt floors. There are 3 of those and 5 outdoor corrals that range in size from ~10x10 to maybe 20x20. There are about 3 lines for tying. A nice mounting block with hand rails. Super quiet. Picnic tables and fire rings. A not so smelly single seat vault toilet. A hand water pump. Plenty of room to park and turn our 32 ft trailer. Trails were lovely, sandy, well-marked, and mostly shady. Horses loved wading in the clear, Sandy river. Shell City Horse campground rocks!
Aug 16, 2023 · Clare SeguinBeautiful single track, two track, and forestry roads wind through the woods and along the river.. Nice access to shallow river crossing. Plenty of space to camp with wood corral and high tie options.
Sep 27, 2021 · Julie KolodjiWas a nice, wooded campground, however the campers tend to spend all night partying, not ideal for a family trip!
Jan 23, 2018 · CarlOne of my most favorite places to ride . And you can tube on the river when it gets to hot.
