Seven Mile Campground

Dunmore, WV 24934, USA

4.0
Amazing little campground! We had site #1 and I believe this site, along with site #3 would be the most convenient if you have a trailer. Pit latrine was clean, no bugs and not stinky. There's a little shed with firewood for sale, $6 for a generous bundle as of 07/22. No showers on site, but about a mile up the road there's showers at the camp office, along with laundry, WiFi, a payphone, and maps. We were there on a holiday weekend and it was still very quiet and peaceful. We plan on taking another trip out during the fall. - Katie Deeken

It offers a diverse landscape that supports a wide array of outdoor activities, from hiking and fishing to scenic drives and wildlife observation. Seven Mile Campground, being part of this vast natural treasure, benefits from the forest's inherent beauty and opportunities for adventure, making it a beloved spot for local outdoor enthusiasts. Its reputation for being a quiet and peaceful destination, even during holiday weekends, further enhances its appeal for those looking to truly relax and immerse themselves in the natural environment.

Location and Accessibility

Seven Mile Campground is conveniently located in Dunmore, WV 24934, USA, deep within the Monongahela National Forest in Pocahontas County. This prime location places it in one of West Virginia’s most scenic and unspoiled regions. While it offers a sense of seclusion, it remains relatively accessible for West Virginians. The campground is situated along the Highland Scenic Highway (WV Route 150), also known as "The Parkway," a designated National Scenic Byway that winds through some of the state's most stunning landscapes. This route offers a picturesque drive leading directly to the campground, making the journey part of the overall experience.

Accessing the campground is generally straightforward, but visitors should be aware that it operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are not typically taken, though online pre-registration is now offered. This system ensures that a peaceful atmosphere is often maintained, as it naturally limits overcrowding. While the campground is suitable for tents and smaller trailers, larger RVs may find the sites and access less accommodating due to the primitive nature of the layout. The drive through the Monongahela National Forest to reach Dunmore is itself a scenic adventure, with winding roads and captivating vistas around every bend. It's advisable for visitors to check road conditions, especially during inclement weather or in the shoulder seasons, as mountain roads can sometimes be affected. The proximity to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and Snowshoe Mountain Resort also means that while you're enjoying the tranquility of Seven Mile, you're not too far from other popular attractions for a day trip.

    • Ice Sales: Available at the ranger station during certain hours, crucial for keeping food and drinks cold.

Promotions or Special Offers

Seven Mile Campground, as a unit within the Monongahela National Forest, generally operates without specific, ongoing promotional offers in the way a private campground might. Its appeal lies more in its affordability and natural setting. However, visitors should be aware of a few key aspects related to cost and potential savings:

  • Affordable Pricing: As noted in customer reviews, the base price per night for a campsite has historically been around $17 (as of 2018). This already represents a great value for a peaceful camping experience in a national forest.

  • Online Pre-registration: While not a discount, the recent implementation of online pre-registration can save time upon arrival, making the process smoother, especially on busier days.

  • Firewood Sales: The availability of firewood for a modest fee ($6 for a generous bundle as of 2022) at the campground itself is a convenient feature that can save campers the hassle and potential cost of bringing their own or sourcing it elsewhere.

  • National Forest Passes: For frequent visitors to national forests, various passes such as the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass might offer benefits, though these typically apply more to entrance fees or specific day-use areas rather than directly discounting campground fees at a small, primitive site like Seven Mile. It's always worth checking the U.S. Forest Service website for current information on passes and their applicability.

  • Seasonal Events: While not direct promotions for the campground, the Monongahela National Forest and nearby state parks (like Cass Scenic Railroad State Park) often host seasonal events, interpretive programs, and festivals that campers at Seven Mile can enjoy. These might include guided hikes, wildlife viewing opportunities, or local cultural events, which can add significant value to a camping trip.

For the most current information regarding pricing, specific services, or any seasonal updates, it is always recommended to contact the Monongahela National Forest directly or visit their official website.
