Selby Campground is located at Selby Road, New Cuyama, CA 93254, USA, placing it within a scenic, yet somewhat remote, area of California. This location offers a true sense of escape into nature, away from major highways and urban noise. However, it's crucial for visitors to be aware of the accessibility aspects, as the road leading to the campground requires preparedness. The final stretch to Selby Campground involves approximately 5 to 13 miles of unpaved, gravel road, which can be uneven in places. As noted by a past visitor, this gravel road makes it challenging for some vehicles, particularly standard RV vans, to maintain a comfortable speed. Those with off-road vehicles, SUVs, or vehicles designed for rougher terrain will find the journey more manageable. It is highly recommended that visitors check their vehicle's suitability and tire condition before attempting the drive. Despite the unpaved access, the "dead end road" status ensures minimal through traffic, contributing to the campground's peaceful and secluded atmosphere. This commitment to a more rugged path is precisely what maintains Selby Campground's pristine and less-trafficked natural beauty, making the effort of getting there well worth it for those seeking genuine tranquility and an escape into the wild.
Selby Campground provides a fundamental yet highly functional set of services, focusing on the core necessities for a pleasant outdoor experience without unnecessary frills. These services highlight its commitment to offering an accessible and unburdened camping environment.
Basic Campsites: The campground offers designated campsites that come equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Each site typically includes a picnic table, perfect for meal preparation and dining al fresco, and a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy traditional campfires for cooking, warmth, and ambiance. These basic provisions ensure that campers have a solid foundation for setting up their temporary home in the wilderness.
Pit Toilets: Selby Campground is equipped with pit toilet bathrooms, which are regularly maintained to a high standard of cleanliness. As noted by visitors, these facilities are "very clean," providing a more comfortable and hygienic option for waste disposal in a primitive setting. The presence of well-kept restrooms significantly enhances the overall camping experience.
Potable Water: A crucial amenity at Selby Campground is the availability of potable (drinkable) water. This means campers do not need to haul in their entire water supply, easing the burden of packing and ensuring access to a vital resource during their stay. Access to fresh water is a significant convenience for cooking, cleaning, and hydration.
Free Camping: One of the most attractive services offered by Selby Campground is that the sites are free of charge. This makes it an incredibly appealing option for budget-conscious travelers and those who appreciate the value of public land camping. The no-cost aspect encourages more Californians to explore the outdoors without financial barriers.
Selby Campground, despite its basic amenities, offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a truly special destination for California campers.
Stunning Scenic Views: The campground is renowned for its beautiful views, particularly the expansive vista of the plains below. This elevated perspective offers a serene backdrop for your camping experience, especially during sunrise and sunset when the landscape is bathed in captivating light. The open views contribute to a sense of vastness and tranquility.
Vibrant Spring Wildflowers: A significant highlight, especially for those visiting in April or late spring, is the spectacular display of wildflowers. The area transforms into a "green and pretty" landscape, carpeted with various colorful blooms. This natural phenomenon attracts many visitors, making it a particularly popular time to experience the campground's beauty. The presence of wildflowers creates a truly picturesque setting.
Peaceful and Remote Atmosphere: The 5-mile dirt, dead-end road leading to Selby Campground ensures a high degree of seclusion. This lack of through traffic contributes to a quiet and peaceful environment, allowing campers to fully relax and enjoy the sounds of nature without urban disturbances. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking solitude and a break from busy life.
Community and Camaraderie: Despite its remote nature, Selby Campground often fosters a friendly and communal atmosphere, particularly during peak seasons like wildflower bloom. Reviews mention that "everyone was getting along," even when campers found spots outside of designated sites. This sense of shared experience among fellow nature lovers adds to the welcoming vibe.
Abundant Wildlife: The natural setting means that wildlife is present. While this requires campers to be vigilant about securing food and trash to prevent attracting "creatures out at night," it also offers opportunities for wildlife observation, connecting campers more deeply with the ecosystem. This natural interaction enhances the wilderness experience.
Off-Road Adventure Access: For those with suitable vehicles, the challenging gravel road to the campground can be considered a highlight in itself, offering an adventurous prelude to the camping experience. It’s a route that rewards those prepared for a rugged journey with a truly secluded destination.

Selby Campground Reviews
Basic campsites with a table and fire rings. Two pit toilet bathrooms that were very clean. Green and pretty in April with a view of the plains below. The wildflowers were in bloom so the sites were all taken on a Wednesday night. People were camping in spots that weren’t sites and everyone was getting along. There was potable water and the sites are free. Take the 5 mile, dirt, dead end road to get there. There are creatures out at night so lock up your food and trash.
Apr 07, 2023 · Doreen O'Donovan13 miles to the campground is non pavement. It’s all gravel. I have RV Van I could not run more than 5 mph the unevenly gravel made it was to difficult to drive. If you have off road van it will be great. I turn around didn’t make it. I did not want my van to run to the extreme drive.
Jan 19, 2025 · janine vNo res, no fee campground with shade structures, tables, and fire rings... Lots of flat space tho pretty exposed.
Mar 30, 2023 · Richard WhitmarshWhat a great place to visit, especially during flower bloom season.
Apr 01, 2023 · Zack_ BlueRidgeHikingFairly secluded, free and quiet on a weekday. The road has a few ruts and mud puddles, but nothing that would prevent any car to negotiate. Nice view from the campground.
