Scott Air Force Base FamCamp

Gunn St, Scott AFB, IL 62225, USA

4.0
Overall, it's not a good campground, which is disappointing. Laundry facilities have been out of service for 1 month so far. Last night the water stopped working (looks like somebody hit a tap with theor vehicle and they cut off water to the half the camp ground instead of just usolating the borken tap), and there is no number to report issues during off hours to look into moving spots. If you have anything towed over 30ft you will struggle with many of the spots and in result, many spots are full of ruts (and the now damaged tap). Maybe good for a 1 or 2 night stay but staying here TDY has been very difficult, and unfortunately there are no other options for us. Whoever is in charge of recreation services really should do better. On the plus side the staff are very nice on the phone when making reservations. Also met one of the maintained guys last week and he was very nice to talk to.Edit 4/13 i decided to bump this up from 2 stars to 3. The water incident was the on call water company who felt the need to punish everybody instead of just isolating the affected spot. Supposedly they are fixing the washing machines this weekend so we will see if that actually gets resolved soon. - Chris Gimbert (Koriax)

Scott Air Force Base FamCamp Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For service members, retirees, and eligible DoD civilians across Illinois and beyond, Scott Air Force Base FamCamp offers a unique and convenient camping experience right within the secure perimeter of Scott Air Force Base. This isn't just a place to park your RV; it's a welcoming retreat managed by Outdoor Recreation, nestled in the Scott Lake Recreation area. While some larger RV parks can feel crowded and impersonal, Scott AFB FamCamp generally provides a good amount of space between sites, fostering a more relaxed atmosphere. It's often praised for its cleanliness, with many visitors highlighting the well-maintained bathroom and laundry facilities as some of the best encountered on military installations. While recent reviews mention temporary issues with laundry and water services, the staff's responsiveness and overall positive feedback about the upkeep suggest a commitment to guest satisfaction. The FamCamp is ideal for both short stays, perhaps a night or two while traveling, and longer visits, with a 30-day stay limit that can often be extended for TDY personnel. Its proximity to base facilities like the Exchange, Commissary, and golf course, combined with easy access to the broader St. Louis metropolitan area, makes it a highly practical and appealing option for those with base access looking for an affordable and secure place to camp in Illinois.

Location and Accessibility

Scott Air Force Base FamCamp is strategically located on Gunn St, Scott AFB, IL 62225, USA. This placement means it is directly on Scott Air Force Base, which is situated near Shiloh and O'Fallon in St. Clair County, Illinois. For Illinois residents, especially those in the southern and central parts of the state, accessing the FamCamp is relatively straightforward via major interstates like I-64. However, it's crucial to remember that as an on-base facility, access is restricted to authorized personnel. This typically includes active duty military, retired military, National Guard, Reservists, DoD civilians, and veterans with service-connected disabilities (with a VHIC card). All eligible guests must have valid DoD identification to enter the base. Once on base, the FamCamp is nestled in the Scott Lake Recreation area, offering a sense of seclusion and natural beauty despite being within a military installation. This provides a secure and quiet environment, away from the general public. The location offers excellent convenience to base amenities, including the Exchange, Commissary, gas station, and various recreational facilities like the golf course and a rubberized walking/running track. Furthermore, its proximity to the greater St. Louis metropolitan area (just a short drive away across the Mississippi River) provides campers with easy access to a vast array of attractions, dining, and entertainment options, making it a versatile base for exploring both local Illinois highlights and the vibrant city life of St. Louis.
