Sawmill Flat Campground

Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA

4.0
Decent group camping spot. Big trees, primitive, seasonably dry, with roaming bears, pesky flies & sometimes hunters. There's plenty of places underneath the trees to pitch a huge tent, park, etc. There are spots to set up a volleyball court, badminton, horseshoes, cornhole, etc. There is a small seasonal creek nearby. It is well off the main road & you may be tempted to give up before you get there. It lies in a setting of pine, cedar, manzanita, and Bear Clover. No reservations needed, no fees, no water, no crowds. The campground has vault toilets and each site has a table and fire ring. Turn off before Clyde's outfit pack station. The 3.1 mile access road off McKinley Grove Rd is dirt and gravel. Water and garbage service is not provided. If you bring it in, you pack it out. Don't forget bug spray, hammock, and your dart board. - john whitacre

Sawmill Flat Campground Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For Californians yearning for a truly rugged and unadulterated wilderness experience, Sawmill Flat Campground, nestled near Shaver Lake, CA, is an exceptional destination. This isn't your typical developed campground with paved roads and extensive amenities; instead, it offers a primitive, no-fee, first-come, first-served (FCFS) camping experience that embodies the spirit of "roughing it." Ideal for groups, hunters, and anyone looking to genuinely disconnect, Sawmill Flat provides a serene escape deep within the Sierra National Forest.

Characterized by its towering trees, a seasonal creek, and a secluded setting, the campground invites visitors to embrace self-sufficiency and the "pack it in, pack it out" ethos. While basic amenities like vault toilets and fire rings are available, the absence of potable water and garbage service means a higher degree of preparedness is required. This commitment to a more untouched environment is precisely what draws those who cherish quiet nights under a vast sky, the sounds of nature, and ample space for group activities like volleyball or horseshoes. Sawmill Flat is a testament to the raw beauty of California's forests, promising a peaceful retreat for those willing to venture a bit further off the beaten path.

Location and Accessibility

Sawmill Flat Campground is located in the beautiful Sierra National Forest, near Shaver Lake, CA 93664, USA. This places it within Fresno County, a region celebrated for its stunning mountain landscapes and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities. Its address near Shaver Lake signifies its proximity to one of California's beloved recreational lakes, though the campground itself maintains a distinctly remote feel.

Accessing Sawmill Flat requires a bit of an adventure, contributing to its secluded charm. From Shaver Lake, you typically take Highway 168 to Dinkey Creek Road for about 12.5 miles. Then, turn right onto McKinley Grove Road (road 11S40) and travel approximately 12.5 miles before turning right onto road 11S12. The final stretch is a 3.1-mile access road that is "dirt and gravel." As one reviewer noted, "you may be tempted to give up before you get there," but the journey is well worth it for the peace and quiet found at the end. While the road might be challenging for some vehicles, it is generally accessible for standard cars, though caution is advised, especially during adverse weather. The remoteness means limited to no cell service, so printing out directions beforehand is crucial. This off-the-beaten-path location is precisely why Sawmill Flat remains uncrowded and offers a genuine wilderness experience, nestled amongst pine, cedar, manzanita, and bear clover.
