Santiam horse camp

Gates, OR 97346, USA

4.0
This is a really fantastic and recently-reopened horse camp in Santiam State Forest. We just stayed for a night on 7/30 and found it to be really nicely set up in many ways. There's plenty of privacy between sites, well-established trails between and around the campground, and very easy access to tons of different trails. The maps they provide are easy to read and the signage is clear. The corrals are made with beefy 10-inch round logs with just enough space for our horses to comfortably move around. This will be on our short list of places to horse camp. The only minor drawback is that the haul-in route is over gravel forest road, which can be steep and skinny in places. I'd recommend 4X4 trucks to be used for hauling more than 2 horses in. - Robert Mosher

Santiam horse camp Introduce

Howdy, Oregon equestrians and outdoor adventurers! If you’re looking for a truly exceptional experience that combines the joy of camping with the thrill of exploring miles of diverse trails on horseback (or by foot or bike!), then Santiam Horse Camp in Gates, OR, is a destination you absolutely need to put on your short list. Recently reopened and thoughtfully re-established after being impacted by the 2020 Labor Day fires, this campground has quickly regained its status as a premier spot in the Santiam State Forest.

Santiam Horse Camp is specifically designed with horse owners in mind, providing robust facilities that ensure comfort for both riders and their equine companions. But its appeal extends beyond the equestrian community; with a network of non-motorized trails, it's also a fantastic base for hikers and mountain bikers eager to explore the lush forest, clear streams, and unique geological formations of the area. It's a place where privacy, well-maintained trails, and a deep connection with nature come together to create an unforgettable Oregon adventure.

Location and Accessibility

Santiam Horse Camp is nestled in the heart of the Santiam State Forest, with its official address listed as Gates, OR 97346, USA. This places it approximately 30 miles east of Salem, making it a convenient drive for many Oregonians, particularly those in the Willamette Valley. The journey to the camp is part of the adventure, as it typically involves navigating "gravel forest roads, which can be steep and skinny in places," as noted by experienced campers. This is why a "4X4 truck" is often recommended, especially for "hauling more than 2 horses."

Despite the rustic nature of the access roads, the campground is well-regarded for its accessibility once you arrive. It serves as the starting point for a system of non-motorized trails, seamlessly connecting campers to the surrounding wilderness. The dedication of the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), in partnership with the Silver Falls Chapter of Oregon Equestrian Trails and local volunteers, has ensured that while the forest is recovering from the 2020 fires, the camp and its trail system are thoughtfully maintained and clearly marked. This collaborative effort has resulted in easy-to-read maps and clear signage throughout the trails, allowing for confident exploration. Its location also puts it within a reasonable distance of other popular Oregon attractions, such as Detroit Lake and Shellburg Falls Recreation Area, offering additional recreational opportunities for day trips. The balance of its secluded, natural setting with relatively good accessibility for appropriate vehicles makes Santiam Horse Camp a prime choice for those seeking a true outdoor experience in the heart of Oregon's forests.
