We have been going to this site off and on for over 15 years. Love it. Happy the gates closes at a certain time we feel safe. A little store is close by. It's camping not glamping so we appreciate whatever accommodations that are provided. The river is close and the stars at night are amazing. Lots of trees, some enclosed /covered spots with fireplaces, reservations required, nice big grass area, tables, always encountered friendly campers and the park attendant back in the day we knew was from TX anda wonderful man. They had a rule at one time no loudness or generators at a certain time which was nice for those who are considerate and respectful. - Klynns Fusion

Location and Accessibility

Santa Fe National Forest Field Tract Campground is located on NM-63, Pecos, NM 87552, USA. This address places it within the Santa Fe National Forest, near the charming community of Pecos, which is a gateway to the Pecos Wilderness and the Pecos River corridor.

Accessibility to Field Tract Campground is generally straightforward via NM-63, a paved state highway. This makes it easily reachable for various types of vehicles, including RVs and those towing trailers, without the need for difficult off-road driving. The campground's location along this route means it's a relatively convenient drive for New Mexicans coming from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, or other parts of the state, allowing for a manageable journey to a true forest escape.

A significant aspect of accessibility and security at Field Tract Campground is its controlled gate, which closes at a certain time (e.g., 8 pm). While this requires campers to plan their arrivals and departures accordingly, it also contributes to a heightened sense of safety and quiet within the campground. Visitors noted that they "feel safe" due to this measure. Camp hosts are often available and willing to work with campers regarding late arrivals, as one reviewer experienced.

It is crucial for visitors to be aware that there is virtually "no cell service" at the campground. While a "sporadic text message" might occasionally come through, relying on cellular data or calls is not feasible. This necessitates planning for communication and navigation offline. Despite this, the lack of cell service is often seen as a highlight by those seeking to truly disconnect from digital distractions.

The river is "close by," indicating easy walking access to the Pecos River for fishing or simply enjoying the water. Furthermore, a "little store is close by," providing a convenient option for last-minute essentials or forgotten items without a long drive back to town. Overall, Field Tract Campground offers a balance of natural seclusion and practical accessibility for a comfortable forest camping experience.

Services Offered

  • Campsites: The campground offers various campsites, including some described as "enclosed/covered spots with fireplaces" and "nice big grass area" suitable for multiple tents. Sites are designed to accommodate RVs and tents.

  • Fireplaces/Fire Pits: Many sites include designated fireplaces or fire pits (metal rings), allowing for campfires for warmth, cooking, and ambiance (always subject to current fire restrictions).

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with picnic tables for comfortable outdoor dining and food preparation.

  • Clean Restrooms (Porta Potties): Reviews confirm the presence of porta potties, which are noted for being "recently emptied and cleaned," ensuring a decent level of cleanliness for basic restroom facilities.

  • No Cell Service: As a remote forest campground, there is no reliable cellular service. This necessitates off-grid planning for communication and entertainment.

  • Reservation Required: Field Tract Campground operates on a "reservations required" basis. It is advised to book well in advance, especially for popular times like Labor Day, as sites often become "completely booked online."

  • Security (Gated Access): The campground features gates that close at a certain time (e.g., 8 pm), contributing to a heightened sense of security and peacefulness for campers.
