Peaceful spot with easy access. We were welcomed by a friendly ranger on arrival. Signs recommend packing up around 7:30 PM and being out by 8:00. There’s a nice, easy hike around the lake with shaded areas along the way. Plenty of parking, and we saw folks enjoying fishing and boating too. Great spot for a laid-back afternoon. - MACS Plumbing Company

The Santa Cruz Lake Recreation Area is conveniently located at X3JP+66, Chimayo, NM 87506, USA. This places it approximately 30 miles northeast of Santa Fe, making it an easy drive for residents of the capital city and surrounding areas. Access is primarily via scenic New Mexico Highway 503, which is part of the "High Road to Taos." From Santa Fe, you would take US 84/285 North to NM 503 in Pojoaque, then turn right and follow the road towards Chimayo. While there are some tight turns on the entrance road (CR 98A) and in parking areas, particularly for larger RVs or vehicles with trailers longer than 30 feet, the overall accessibility is considered good for most vehicles.

The recreation area features two main campgrounds: the North Lake Campground and the Overlook Campground. The North Lake area provides direct access to the lake and boat ramp, while the Overlook Campground is situated higher up on an escarpment, offering panoramic views. This dual setup provides options for different preferences, ensuring that visitors can choose a spot that best suits their desire for lakeside activity or elevated scenic beauty. Its relatively close proximity to communities like Chimayo, Española, and even Taos means that campers are never too far from essential services or additional cultural attractions.
