Our aim is to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview, helping you decide if Santa Ana River - South Fork is the right destination for your next camping trip.
The Santa Ana River - South Fork campground is located at Angelus Oaks, CA 92305, USA. This location places it within the vast expanse of the San Bernardino National Forest, a beloved natural playground for residents of Southern California. Accessibility is a significant advantage for this campground. Situated off State Route 38, it's a relatively straightforward drive for many living in the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County, and the Inland Empire. State Route 38 itself is a picturesque route, winding through mountain terrain and offering stunning views, making the journey to the campground part of the outdoor experience. While the road can experience traffic, especially on weekends and holidays, its proximity to major population centers makes it an ideal spot for spontaneous weekend trips or even day visits for those looking to explore the area. It's always advisable to check traffic conditions before heading out, especially during peak seasons, to ensure a smooth journey. The ease of access makes it a prime candidate for those looking for a quick getaway without extensive travel commitments.
When considering a campground, understanding the available services is crucial for planning your stay. While the Santa Ana River - South Fork is often praised for its natural setting, it's important to set expectations based on recent observations.
- Camping Spots: The campground offers designated areas for setting up camp. While specific amenities at each site can vary, the primary service is the availability of a place to pitch a tent or park a small RV (though large RVs might find access challenging depending on the specific site and road conditions).
- Access to Natural Waterways: Historically, a significant draw of this campground has been its proximity to the Santa Ana River. While recent reports indicate ongoing construction and changes to the river's flow and appearance, the general service provided is access to a natural water feature, even if its current state is different from past experiences. It’s important to note that the river's condition can fluctuate based on recent rainfall and ongoing environmental projects.
- Proximity to Wilderness: The core service of this location is its integration into the San Bernardino National Forest, providing campers with direct access to hiking, wildlife viewing, and a general forest experience. This means the service is less about developed facilities and more about the raw, natural environment it offers.
- Dog-Friendly Environment: As indicated by a past review, the campground appears to be dog-friendly, allowing visitors to bring their canine companions along for the adventure. This is a valuable service for many pet owners looking for outdoor recreation options. However, always confirm specific pet policies and regulations, such as leash laws and waste disposal requirements, with the managing authority before your visit.
The appeal of Santa Ana River - South Fork lies in its distinctive features and highlights, even as the environment undergoes changes.
- Secluded Atmosphere (Historically): Past visitors have noted a sense of quiet and seclusion, even when relatively close to the highway. This suggests that certain areas within the campground, or specific times of the week, can offer a peaceful retreat from noise and crowds. Finding "your fav spot" away from the main thoroughfare appears to be a possibility for those seeking tranquility.
- Natural Surroundings and Recreation: Despite recent construction, the fundamental highlight remains its setting within the San Bernardino National Forest. This offers opportunities for various outdoor activities, including:
- Fishing: While recent reports suggest the river's current state may not be ideal for fishing due to low water levels and altered habitats, historically, fishing has been a popular activity. It's crucial for visitors to research current fishing conditions and regulations before planning to fish.
- Wood Collection: The presence of wood for collection, as mentioned in a past review, highlights the natural abundance of the area, suitable for campfires (where permitted and safe). Always adhere to local fire restrictions.
- Dog Play Areas: The ability to play with a dog by the water, as noted by a previous visitor, underscores the campground's appeal for pet owners. This speaks to the open spaces and natural elements that allow for interaction with pets.
- Ease of Access from Major Hubs: A significant highlight for local Californians is the campground's relatively short driving distance from major urban centers like Los Angeles and Orange County. This makes it a convenient option for weekend trips or even day visits, allowing for a quick escape into nature without extended travel.
- Evolving Landscape: While recent reports about construction and changes to the river are important to acknowledge, they also highlight a dynamic environment. For some, witnessing the natural processes and rehabilitation efforts can be a point of interest, understanding that landscapes are not static.

Santa Ana River - South Fork Reviews
August 29,24Creek is flowing so fast I nearly wasn't able to cross in my water shoes! It was Thursday and even tho Hwy 38 was bumper to bumper my fav spot(15' from hwy) was completely quiet! I spent an hour fishing, an hour playing with my dog and I still had time to collect wood for an hour before dark!Just another beautiful day in the mountains!
Aug 29, 2024 · GinaThey're doing construction on the entire Santa Ana River. Do not go here expecting a peaceful stream through a forest with fish. The entire forest is ripped out. The river is barely an inch deep while running, and there are almost no pools of water. Don't waste your time, and ignore the reviews from 5 years ago.
Jul 05, 2024 · Aidan QuanSouth Fork is a great spot to jump off and ride the Santa Ana River Trail. Big parking lot right by highway 38. The SART starts right there, and you can write it to Glass road, Middle Control road, or all the way to Redlands if you want. You can turn into a nice loop by coming back on seven oaks road to the parking lot. There are no facilities, so bring food and water that you will need.
